This is perfect for the San Antonio Spurs,
though they just lost a heartbreaker, a nail
biter in the Summer League to the Los Angeles Lakers.
There is one thing that's happening
with the Spurs roster that we're going to touch on
and what's happening in Summer League is perfect
for what the roster needs and we are going
to discuss that here on Spurs Digest with your host Keenan Warner.

this video come join the Spurs family
because we would love to have you here
but if you guys don't know or you didn't see the summer league
game last night it was a late one 10 a.m
or 10 p.m eastern 9 p.m in central time 88 to 89 the
Spurs lost the Spurs outplayed the Lakers for the majority
of this game unfortunately Dalton Connect
got hot late scored about 13 points in the fourth quarter
and then a putback dunk sealed the fate
for the San Antonio Spurs as you see here
the Spurs won the first second and third quarter
their defense was hounding in the third quarter they
were able to showcase some of the young
tenacity that you want to see
and some of the intangibles that you are going to see from this
year's actual Spurs roster we know only maybe one
or two players we'll get into them are going to
probably be playing for the San Antonio Spurs roster throughout
the season but what you do have
here is some team and some identity building
from the bottom of the culture from the G League culture
into the bottom of the roster culture
that's only going to trickle its way up to the top.
And then you see in that fourth quarter, the Lakers got really hot.
It really Dalton Connect did what he did down the stretch,
and they played some pretty tough defense.
But overall, the San Antonio Spurs played a good game.
Carter Bryant, he went 2 of 8, 2 of 7 from 3.
The thing that you realize here watching
Carter Bryant play basketball as of right now
is his offensive bag is limited.
The athleticism is there.
the defensive tenacity is there as you even saw
from the intro highlight he was locking them up
in the corner that Spurs bench
though it was like at the end of the first quarter of a G League game
that Spurs bench is talking and trying to get them activated
and happy and you love to see that kind
of power and empowerment I should say of a player even
though it's just a summer league game but
Carter Bryant the thing with him is he really can't create
his own shot at a high level right
now he wasn't doing that much in college
and he's not doing that now but the good thing about him
is he can come in play very good defense
and be a 3 and D guy early on as he develops those
offensive moves his go-to move
and really utilizing that athleticism that he has he is a smart player
he is very creative what i mean is he's going
to be able to defend with tenacity and he is going
to showcase his athleticism game in and game out
and the hustle and the effort is always going to
be there he is a guy that has such high potential
and the growth is going to take a lot for him to
get there but the real player that i want to focus
on we see Riley Minutness made a couple shots today
Harrison Ingram one of seven all one from three he has
the hustle he has even the passing ability
a little bit there but his offensive game just
hasn't come along yet and that's going to be
difficult for him to get to that next level
but David Jones Garcia almost said David Garcia
David Jones Garcia again another 25 spot 9 of 14
from the floor 3 of 5 from 3 4 of 4 from the line
6 rebounds 5 assists only two turnovers
with the ball in his hands he went off again playing
against people like Bronny
who has seen NBA minutes playing against obviously Dalton Knecht
on the switch possibly who has gotten NBA minutes
so you see those kind of things and you get
excited overall we're going to discuss Jones in just a second
but overall I just wanted to mention
again the Spurs really did outplay the Lakers throughout
this entirety of the game the only
thing the Lakers did was they got to the line more
the offensive rebounds in the first half
was a little bit of a problem
for the San Antonio Spurs they cleaned that up in the second half
the assists are the same the steals
are the same one less block the turnovers are about the same
it's just the fouls down the stretch
and then really Dalton Connect getting hot from that
three-point line but Jones Garcia ended
with 25 points he was 9 of 14 3 of 5 4 of 4 as i said
28 minutes that is great production
in that little amount of time he finished the leading
scorer in an efficient outing the 23 year old
also racked up a high game mark in assists Jones
Garcia notched 25 points in each
of the last two summer league appearances during which he shot
64.3 percent from the floor across 46 G League
outings between Mexico City and Salt Lake City
in 24-25 he averaged 21 points 7.1 rebounds
and 3.1 assists in about 30 minutes so last year 24-25
Jones Garcia averaged 21-7-3
and then this year we see him putting up 25 in back-to-back games
why is this important well Jones Garcia has
the ability to make this roster now he showed last
year what he can do he's showing now
this year what he can do and before we had we had like a
just a log jam of guards
who were potential base that were solid we just got rid of two of them
so let's discuss that real quick
the Washington Wizards trading Kelly Olynyk to the San Antonio
Spurs Josh highlighted this and Josh did a great job
with this and I'm really just piggybacking
off of Josh he talked about we got rid
of Branham we got rid of Wesley and we got rid of
a second round pick we have an litany
of second round picks especially over the next five years
the second round pick is nothing we're getting rid
of two guards that really weren't going to play
that are more talented and they honestly could go
do better things in Washington they're going to
get chances to showcase their actual talent
on this roster they just weren't going to but when
you have a guy like David Jones Garcia
who is still making his name and still trying to pave
his way to get to the NBA him being
on the bench him maybe getting some spot minutes if say Devin
Vassell and De'Aaron Fox miss a game
and now you need to get Garcia in there for 12 minutes we know
the athleticism we know the capabilities the scoring prowess
and the fact that he feels comfortable
with the ball in his hands ball pressure hasn't
really bothered him throughout the entirety of
this summer league so when you get that kind
of opportunity there you really can just extend him
into the fold and with this roster
and how they traded with the trade you don't have to worry
about that logjam anymore of guys
who are kind of trying to make it because last year you had
Chris Paul, Stephon Castle who's still finding
his way you had Devin Vassell obviously not a point
guard but a guard in his own right Blake Wesley,
Malachi Branham you had all all of these players
just there and you weren't able to really have them showcase
their talent only when people were
injured but now we're in a position where you don't even have
to worry about that you don't
have to think we're wasting potential on the bench
but you get another guy in there because
in this guard league that we have in this wing league
that we have you need as many guards as
possible if you're going to play an 82 game season
because we know there are not many players
play in front to back 82 games you're going to get
a lot of 66 67 70 games played throughout the
season and you want to still stack up wins especially
in a western conference to do that
you're going to need bench players who can come into the game
and produce at a high level regardless
if they're only going to play 12 to 14 games
and that is something that David Jones Garcia is
showcasing that he really can do because if you go to here
and you look at this this is right now
what you would presume to be our 13.
I have Garcia highlighted in red
because he clearly isn't on the roster right now,
and there could be another person on that roster
who jumps in after the third unit,
second unit, or if we make a trade of some sort.
But the starting five, we got De'Aaron Fox,
we got Stephon Castle, Barnes, Sohan, Wemby.
You possibly could flip Sohan and Olenek if you wanted to.
I don't think they will, but you possibly could
because Olenek has started.
it started even last year he has started
for many teams in the past he is a good player 10.5
rebounds a game for his career shooting about 37 38 percent
from three last year shot almost 42
percent from three so you have Kelly Olynyk there
who could switch out if you wanted to
depending on how things are but that gives you
a primary ball handler a elite defender who can
play make a great spot up shooter who can
also get a shot off the bounce a great versatile defender
dirty work guy rebounder
and then obviously your superstar in Wemby that's your starting five
off the bench you've got a great shot creator
and a guy who can get downhill and score very well in
the paint in Dylan Harper you've got another scorer off
the bench in Devin Vassell a guy who
can light it up and shoot Keldon Johnson another kind
of microwave-ish style guy who's going to go
in there and give you instant offense.
Kelly Olynyk, a great pick and pop big who can get
down in the post if need be, can stretch the floor,
is going to play good defense. And then
you got Luke Cornett. And then I didn't even mention Carter Bryant.
Don't even mention Carter
Bryant, who is just a young, just a young guy who is going to develop.
And then you get David
Jones Garcia. In case one of those guys do get injured,
you got a guy who can come in there
and get you about 10 to 12 minutes a game
and produce in those 10 to 12 minutes with high
level competitive basketball so overall
though that this summer league game is a summer league
game and the results don't fully matter you get
a summer league championship cool cool what this is
perfect for is the fact that you are seeing in live time a guy
who can fill in one of the needs
for the San Antonio Spurs a guy
who could fill in one of the needs for the San Antonio Spurs and
that is just filling out the depth chart
and it would be a great fill-in and especially how he
has been playing but let me know what you guys think on David Garcia
or David Jones Garcia sorry
filling in for that guard spot that we are now lacking just a touch
because of the fact that we
got Kelly Olynyk, a player that we needed, let me
know what you guys think, this has been Spurs Digest
with your host Keenan Warner I appreciate all of you guys
and I'll be seeing you guys very soon
