Does San Jose Sharks have a secret weapon in Luca Cagnoni?
In this video, we're going to break down his insane performance playing his offside in
last night's preseason game.
We're going to talk about what coaching staff and players had to say about his performance,
and we're also going to touch on Askrof and how great it was to see him have a huge game
last night.
Sure enough, want to miss this episode of Sharks Digest, but before we dive into everything

Yes, with that said, we were live on the stream last night.
If you were there, go down in the comments, let me know you were there, and it was great.
We got to watch a fantastic preseason game where the San Jose Sharks didn't come out
on top, lost in a shootout, but there was a lot of great positives that came from this
game, and the big obvious one was Luca Cagnoni.
In this video, we're going to break it all down, just talk about some recaps of this
game first.
We've seen, like I said, Cagnoni played Unreal Logging 22-43 minutes on ice last night.
Playing on his offside didn't look like he lost an edge at all.
He looked amazing and really orchestrated this team five-on-five last night.
Askrof, as mentioned, 22 saves with a 927 save percentage was great to see.
One of my keys to the game last night was getting to see Askrof have an above 900 save
percentage.
We did get to see this last night, and he excelled in it as well.
Obviously, our boy, Ivar Stenberg, got his first NHL point, and a great heads-up play
to shoot it off the pad of the goaltender, Shunashov shovels it over to Misa.
Misa ends up putting it in for his first goal of the Sharks' campaign, which was great to
see as well.
But, like I said, the big star of this video today is Luka Cagnoni, as he had an unbelievable
game last night.
This guy was off the charts, in my opinion.
We expected a big game out of him.
We needed to see one for him to solidify his roster spot.
He definitely did that, in my opinion.
There's a couple instances last night where he came.
One that comes to mind was when he came across the neutral zone, did a little spin move,
and then just went all the way in, tried to find Graf cutting down the middle, but it
just got him to his skates there.
But it was a great heads-up play by Cagnoni there.
Another instance was on this, I believe it was the power play, he was orchestrating this
very well.
I really thought him on his edges, he's very quick, and he has very high IQ to make scoring
chances happen out of nothing, which is great to see as well.
And all this, playing on the right side when he's preferred to play on the left.
So we got to see a lot of this from him last night, which was great to see.
Another instance that does come to mind is when he kind of pinched in, took a wrister,
trying to find the opposite quarter, rings the post, that could open the scoring for
the Sharks last night.
But this guy was all over the ice, doing it all defensively, offensively.
Cagnoni, we talked about him, I don't even know how many times I said his name last night
on the stream.
It was great to see him last night, have the performance that he did, and kind of solidify
himself as the future of the blue line for this Sharks team.
And as you see in the title, the secret weapon for this team.
A lot of teams are really going to underestimate him with how undersized he is, but this guy
is quick on his feet, has unbelievable edges, and is able to hold on to the puck on that
blue line like it's on a string.
So it's just great to see him have a game like this last night, and it did lead to some
great quotes coming out today from Ryan Warsawski, the head coach, he said, Cagnoni was really
good, really good starts.
He also said, I'm seeing some things we have to clean up, some situations playing his offside
that we just need to work on, understand where we are in, and he says, there's certain situations
throughout the game, but I thought he made plays.
And I think every Sharks fan watching that game last night, even Vegas fans, took notice
of Cagnoni.
He did play great on that side, like Warsawski said there, yeah, there's things to work on,
but he definitely made some great plays.
He set up a lot of these scoring chances for the Sharks last night, and on that power play
towards the end of the game, really stood out there in my mind.
He was really finding, starting this cycle and getting something happening, and it almost
led to a Stenberg goal, I believe it was the end of the second period, where he was involved
in that one as well, and then obviously towards the end of the period, into overtime, he looked
good as well, and unfortunately, to end the game, he doesn't bury the penalty shot, but
other than that, I mean, he had an unbelievable showing.
Then we also see here what he had to say about his performance last night, he said, obviously
I can't go blow guys up, but I thought I was pretty good, stick on the puck, I was in some
good spots, a couple got past me, I just kind of had to learn from that, and it's great
to see that, yeah, he knows he had a solid game, but you know, he did notice some instances
where he was, guys bet him backtracking on the ice, and he's just going to try to clean
that up now, and he knows he's not a big body like Etruba, who can beat you up and just
lay you out with a hit, but he's a guy who can be very elusive when he has the puck on
his stick, and he can get his stick on the other team's stick when they do have the puck
in it, so it was just great to see him have that performance last night as well, I did
just want to bring this up as well, I believe this was just him talking about making the
team, this is from Shangpeng on Twitter, so make sure to give him a follow, check out
his article on last night's game, he says that's definitely the goal, it's kind of the
next step, right, you've got to go out there and show that you deserve it, basically saying
yeah, I want to make this team, I'm not really focused on going back to the Barracuda this
year, I think I'm ready to make that jump, and he definitely showed that last night to
everybody that was watching the stream, and then we also had Michael Misa, the only goal
scorer for the San Jose Sharks, talk about Cagnoni last night, he said he was awesome,
super skilled, easy to play with, he also said it's nice when you've got him quarterbacking
the power play, he moves the puck really well, and is such a shifty player, he's going to
be good for you, so it's great to see that not just coaching staff, himself, players,
all know how great of a game that Cagnoni did have, and they all noticed how skilled
of a player he is, and that's one thing I definitely did notice from this, is he kind
of looks more like a Schaefer-Hudson type of defenseman, who can really use his speed
and his edge work to really stumble some forwards on the other team when they come up to try
to get the puck in the defensive zone, and he had very good vision, and threaded a lot
of passes through, there was an instance where he almost went from the top corner of the
blue line diagonal down to the back of the net, I do believe it was Graf, it just barely
got deflected the last second, but I do really like what I've seen from him, this is going
to be a guy going into this season who I think could have a big year for us, and I really
hope that we do get to see him in the next pre-season game, which is Thursday, tomorrow
night against the Anaheim Ducks, the rematch, where we're hoping to get our first pre-season
win, we will be live for that one as well.
But, we gotta talk about Yaroslav Askrof, like I mentioned, he had that 927 save percentage
last night, 22 saves, looked solid, and in this first period, the Sharks were hemmed
in their zone for the last 10 minutes of the period, it felt like, and Askrof made some
huge saves, a big breakaway save, to keep this game knotted at 0, and he did the same
in the second period as well, the Sharks really played a lot better in this second period,
but there was some ah-bam rushes that he did have to make himself look big and stop some
pucks, in the shootout, I think he looked solid as well, you know, unfortunately we
do end up losing that, but I think Askrof all around had a very great game, and I think
for us, and for himself, it gives us a lot of confidence in our goaltending heading into
the season now, a season where we've been talking about, he needs to have an above 900
save percentage to make this team be successful, and we've seen that last night, which was
great to see as well, but I would be reminiscent if I didn't have to talk about Ivar Stenberg
and his first game, I do know that co-host here, Rachel on the channel did a video on
this earlier, so if you want a full breakdown on Stenberg, check that video out after this
one, but he had a great game last night, he had some instances where he had some great
takeaways on the middle of the ice, getting the pucks, creating turnovers, and I mean
that tic-tac-toe pass from the Swagline, it was Stenberg to Wenberg, Wenberg tries to go
back over to Graf, but they couldn't get the goal-scoring chance there, but it was great,
and these guys were unbelievable last night, we just got to talk about here, from Natural
Statric, this is also from the Sheng Peng article, so check that out, this is what he
had to say, he said, he looked elevated in his role tonight, he had 22 minutes on the
ice tonight, it was the most dangerous line, obviously the Swagline, they say, that line
had half of the team's high-danger scoring chances at 5-on-5, which I do believe was
3, so they had 3 high-danger scoring chances, couldn't convert on any, but just seeing that
number from this line, it's just a matter of time before they bury one, I really liked
the look of the Swagline last night, he also said Stenberg also had a number of steals
and interceptions like I did mention, he said it wasn't a perfect debut, he did have some
positioning issues defensively, but all in all, for your first NHL game as a, what, 18-year-old,
19-year-old, coming into his first season of the league, playing his first hockey on
North American ice, and he looked great, I think he looked like a 4- or 5-year veteran
at times last night, I mean just the way his confidence that he exudes with the puck, just
the way he's able to find his teammates with these passes was unbelievable, and the confidence
he has to just go in and take the puck off of players' sticks on the forecheck, I mean
he was just unbelievable last night, and it was just great to see him have that strong
showing that we really wanted him, really wanted to see out of him, but hopefully next
time we can get him to see him score his first goal as we got to see him get his first point
last night, but like I mentioned, if you guys tuned into the stream, appreciate everybody
for tuning in, like I said, I'm going to try to stream every single game this year, and
that includes tomorrow night's game against the Anaheim Ducks at home, we're hoping to
see Celebrity and Smith, we got some fun graphics to debut if they score, so if you guys are
