The Heat made ANOTHER move... Miami signs Athletic Point Guard
Sep 30, 2026
The Miami Heat made another move, bringing in another very athletic point guard that
has been tied to the Heat in the past and now making a full circle moment, bringing
him back into this Heat organization.
I'm here to break down all of the moving parts involving Dennis Smith Jr. and how he finally
is a member of this Miami Heat team because there are a handful of different pieces of
information out there highlighting if it's an Exhibit 10, a standard, or how is he actually
a part of this team.
We'll break down that, what he will bring to this Heat organization, if we will actually
see him on the pro level rather than down in the G-League, and what he would be able
to contribute.
We'll break down all of that on this episode of Heat Digest, so let's not waste any time
and get right to it, breaking down the news involving Dennis Smith Jr.
I don't know how old you guys are watching this, but he graduated in 2016 and went to
NC State.
I graduated in 2018, from high school that is.
He was one of the most athletic human beings, at least in high school, that I had ever witnessed.
This guy could jump out of the gym and I witnessed it first hand in college.
It was ridiculous, just head scratching the rim every time he went up for a layup or a
dunk.
Freaky, freaky athleticism.
He came into the league.
He's jumped around since then playing for a bunch of different teams, including the
Brooklyn Nets, the Dallas Mavericks, the Charlotte Hornets, and various others, and now he finds
himself playing for the Miami Heat.
Now, how this all started was this quote and tweet from Chris Haynes.
Free agent guard Dennis Smith Jr. has reached a deal with the Miami Heat.
His agent Daniel Hazan of Hazan Sports tells me the Heat have been monitoring the former
lottery pick very closely all summer.
So Chris Haynes, a very credible source surrounding the game of basketball, highlights that the
Miami Heat have been monitoring Dennis Smith Jr. all summer long, and that's not really
a surprise.
It's just interesting that they decided to go now at this point, especially after all
of the signings they've made over the past few days on those Exhibit 10 contracts, bringing
in three to four different guys on Exhibit 10s, some being one guard and the rest of
them being power forwards or center, just big men in general.
Now they go out and they acquire Dennis Smith Jr.
Now, this is something to be excited about, and something that is not something to be
excited about is the Miami Dolphins, and on Kalsi, who is sponsoring this video of Heat
Digest, if you sign up for Kalsi right now using the link down in the description or
in the pinned comment, new users get $55, not $25, they bumped it up from $25 to now
$55, so if you use code DigestNBA when signing up with the link down in the description or
in the pinned comment, new users get $55 added to your account instantly when trading your
first $25, and on Kalsi, it's phenomenal.
You can trade on practically anything, from gas prices, the weather, sports, politics,
anything and everything, and you know what else you can trade on?
The worst regular season record in the NFL, and this is what I was alluding to.
Something that you don't get excited about is the Miami Dolphins playing football, but
I will tell you right now, you can trade yes or no on practically anything in the sense
of contracts on Kalsi, and right now you can trade $25 to pay $100 back on the Tennessee
Titans who have the worst record in the National Football League, and to be totally fair, not
either of these teams are good.
Both the Titans and the Miami Dolphins are absolutely horrible, but I promise you the
Titans are worse.
There's no way around it.
I know Achan just went out this past week, but they are still better.
Cam Ward, his days are numbered in Tennessee, and all things seem to be going downhill.
Now let's get back to it and break down the rest of the Dennis Smith Jr. conversation,
something that is extremely, extremely exciting in Miami, and this is where the confusion
comes because we broke down that original tweet, Chris Haynes' tweet, that originally
broke the news surrounding the Miami Heat and this signing of Dennis Smith Jr., but
then we get this from Ira Wenderman.
Dennis Smith Jr. will be signing with the Heat, an NBA source confirms to the Sun-Sentinel,
but Smith will not be with the Heat for start of training camp.
Smith closed last season with the Heat's G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Sky Force,
which is likely where this is headed, but then we get this from Anthony Chang.
According to a source, Heat plans to sign Dennis Smith Jr. at some point, but signing
will come later on.
It's going to be an Exhibit 10 deal, so we're told that he's signing with the Heat.
We're confirming that he, then we get confirmation reports that he is signing with the Heat,
but we don't know exactly how he is signing with the Miami Heat.
Then we get this from Anthony Chang.
It appears it is definitely going to come down the line.
A deal has been agreed upon by both parties, and this deal will be signed in the coming
weeks.
It has not been signed officially yet.
With that being said, training camp will probably begin, it'll go on through some time, and
then an Exhibit 10 contract, not a standard, not a two-way, but an Exhibit 10 contract
will be signed by Dennis Smith Jr., and he will be brought in to this Miami Heat organization.
Now, the Miami Heat must be pretty sold on the idea of Dennis Smith Jr. to give him an
Exhibit 10 contract post, or if not, in the middle of training camp, because Exhibit 10
contracts are widely known and looked at as tryout contracts.
Hey, you're being brought in, prove to us that you're worth any form of contract, whether
it's a two-way or standard.
If you do that, we will then present and award you that contract and keep you in-house in
this organization.
It doesn't seem like that's the case for Dennis Smith Jr., because not only is he getting
an Exhibit 10 contract, but it's not coming pre-training camp.
You know, like Ian Sheflin, who we discussed from Clemson that played tight end and he
their team at the University of Clemson or Clemson University, then just got an Exhibit
10 as a tryout contract with this Heat team going into training camp, and there were various
others.
Bez Mbang, also another one, tryout contract, Exhibit 10, come into Miami, play through
the training camp, prove that you are worth a standard or even a two-way contract to stay
in-house in Miami.
Miami appears to be extremely confident in Dennis Smith Jr. and his abilities, and the
overall potential he still maintains.
If you're curious to what his stats have looked like throughout his career up to this point,
I will show you if they do load.
Here we go.
So, if you look, again, he's been in the league now for, I believe, nine seasons.
He has had a very, very journeyman-like career.
Drafted to the Dallas Mavericks back in 2017-2018, jumps to the New York Knicks, back to the
then to Detroit, then to Portland, then to Charlotte, and finally with the Brooklyn Nets.
He has been the definition of a journeyman, and in his best year, he got up to 15 points,
3 rebounds, and nearly 5 assists, or 5 assists with a steal per game, and he was able to
maintain that for the first four to five seasons of his major league career, which is great
to see, but then there was a drastic jump, a drop-off, but you also have to take into
account the lack of games played, as well as the lack of minutes, and the lack of just
overall production went hand-in-hand for Dennis Smith, Jr., and something that I really think
pushed him out of the league is the brand of basketball that he plays, even dating back
to high school, and I know this for a fact because I watched him a lot, especially those
hoop mixtapes and hoop diamond tapes.
He was never considered a three-point shooter.
He's always someone, this is because he doesn't have stats from last year, I apologize.
We can go to the actual Sky Force from last season, and what he looked like for the Sky
Force, as well as another G League affiliate.
He played 21 games for the Sky Force, started in 13 of them in 26 minutes played.
He averaged 8 points on only 8 attempts per game, but again, 3 of 8, not the greatest
percentages, just under 40%, 39.8%, which is going to get the job done, but again, looking
at 8 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists per game, and 1 steal, 1.5 steals per game, he has a
lot of ability still.
He really and truly does, and now he gets reunited with a childhood friend, Bam Autobio,
someone that they played together with on Team Loaded from Hoop State, North Carolina,
as high schoolers.
It's just a reunion for him.
I don't think that he's going to be on a two-way.
I think he might even end up getting one of these standard contracts that Miami has remaining
to fill out that 15th and final roster spot, and again, the final guard position in Miami.
Let me know down below, what are your thoughts and opinions on the acquisition of Dennis
Smith Jr., and I will see you guys on the next episode of Heat Digest.
