The Cavs master plan has been revealed...
Aug 14, 2026
The Cavs have missed out on a couple of free agents this offseason but there's still players
out there yet to be signed. Who can the Cavs sign and who might they give up? Peyton Watson,
Max Truce, and Dennis Schroeder are all names that have been mentioned and I'll break it all
down in this video. Now the first player I want to talk about is Peyton Watson. His name has been
mentioned recently a lot in free agency and trade rumors and all that good stuff and Peyton Watson
is coming off the best season of his career statistically. Watson had a really interesting
role last season with the Denver Nuggets. Jamal Murray, Nicole Jokic, Aaron Gordon all missed
a lot of time due to injury last season and Watson stepped up to fill a void in that kind of that
two-guard wing role for Denver and he had a really great season. Watson, he's well known for his
athleticism, for his defense, guarding the other team's best player, but last season he really
stepped it up improving his three-point shooting. Watson is a very versatile player, can do a lot on
both ends of the floor, so he could be a great addition for Cleveland, but now as it's well
known Cleveland is very high above the second apron and the Cavs would have to get rid of some
players so they can bring in some free agents, maybe make some trades down the line and save
some money to help build this roster and keep them a contender. Now like I said Peyton Watson had
the best season statistically of his career. Let's take a look at some of his stats from last season.
He averaged just a hair under 15 points per game, five boards, shooting 49% from the field for a
guard slash wing type of player averaging or shooting rather really close to 50% from the field
is really impressive especially in the NBA and he had the best three-point shooting season of his
career at 41% from three-point lane. Watson, a lot of his looks though were he was wide open in the
corner on the wing after another player had driven and kicked it out to him because teams last year
were willing to just let him shoot, they would live with that shot, but Watson proved that he
could knock it down at a pretty good clip so my question moving forward in his game is will Watson
will his three-point shooting translate when that he's accounted for when teams are guarded
they're not helping off of him and he has a hand in his face is he still going to be able to knock
down three-point shots at a 41% clip because that's what separates a lot of players in this
league is the ability to knock down open shots everybody can do that versus the ability to knock
down contested three-point shots that what separates the good role players from the great
role players so we all know Watson is athletic very athletic we all know he is a terrific defender
able to lock down the other team's best player but is he going to be able to knock down those
three-point shots at a very high level now the Cavs have to give up some players in order to
afford Peyton Watson even if they wanted to afford other free agents like DeMar DeRozan or Jonathan
Kuminga who I've mentioned in past videos they got to give up some players now who could the Cavs
give up to acquire Peyton Watson there's a couple players that come to mind and the first is Max
Struess. Struess is coming off a season where he only played 12 games in the regular season
and it's really difficult for a player to make an impact in that short of a time when you
missed basically the entire season he came back at the very end of the regular season and
got ramped up for playoff time but Struess did Struess made a very strong impact for the Cleveland
Cavaliers I'll we'll take a look at his stats in a moment but Struess went nine and three in those
12 games he played in the regular season he helped a team that in in the NBA you have to reach your
peak as the regular season ends you have to be playing the best basketball of the season before
the playoffs start Max Struess helped elevate the Cavs and get us to that point where we were playing
some of the best basketball of the season near the end of the regular season now obviously that
didn't translate necessarily into the playoffs however Struess did help in both the end of the
regular season in the playoffs because of his defense and obviously his three-point shooting
ability now looking at his stats and comparing Struess to Peyton Watson it's obviously not a
fair comparison it's not apples to apples comparing Peyton Watson stats to Max Struess because Struess
played in 12 games and Peyton Watson played in 54 games last season but Struess made an impact
in those 12 games that he played at the end of the regular season he averaged 11 points per game
five rebounds per game and the three-point percentage 40 and only 12 games is very good
and and so we all know Struess as a great shooter but he's also a fantastic defender when in the
postseason when the Cavs were playing teams with the Raptors had Scottie Barnes he was going off
the Pistons had Cade Cunningham we all know what Cade was doing and then Jalen Brunson on the Knicks
when Dean Wade wasn't guarding those players it was Max Struess Max Struess was
the Cavs second best defender last season so if the Cavs are to acquire somebody they have to bring
in a player who can guard and Cleveland they have all the tools on offense to win an NBA championship
it's the defense that's the problem and we saw that against the New York Knicks and the Eastern
Conference Finals so bringing in Peyton Watson would be an upgrade defensively compared to Max
Struess but obviously not as good a shooter as Max Struess so you're losing some shooting but
you're gaining some defense and I think on this Cavs team I think that's a benefit I think you're
you can afford to lose some three-point shooting ability when you have Donovan Mitchell and James
Harden on the team as well who are very capable three-point shooters so losing Max Struess getting
Peyton Watson I think that's a win for the Cavs but that wouldn't be enough to get the Cavs over
the hump of that second apron where they'll be able to afford a free agent like Watson, Dominguez,
DeRozan somebody who can help this team they also have to lose somebody else and in my opinion I
think Dennis Schroeder would be a great piece to lose I don't think you're missing anything with
Dennis Schroeder besides maybe some grit maybe some defensive tenacity but Dennis Schroeder I
don't think he did I'm a huge Dennis Schroeder hater I don't think he did anything for the Cavs
last season I thought in my opinion Craig Porter should have been getting minutes over Dennis
Schroeder he's a younger player a little bit more of a variety offensively obviously Craig's not as
good of a defender as Dennis Schroeder but Porter in my opinion a younger player better on offense
should have been getting more minutes and Schroeder is getting older his defense isn't as good as it
once was and in the playoffs he proved to be a little bit of a liability on offense at times
during games so I think losing Dennis Schroeder could be beneficial for the Cavs to help them get
under that second apron bring in a free agent so it's not a trade but if you really think about it
Dennis Schroeder and Max Schroeder you lose Dennis Schroeder and Max Schroeder you gain
Peyton Watson in this scenario I think that benefits the Cavs I really do Peyton Watson
he's an improving three-point shooter his shot is on the come-up and we all know what he can do
defensively and with his athleticism but I think Peyton Watson could be a huge addition to this
Cavs team but let's take a look and I want to know what if you all think is Peyton Watson a player
who would be a good fit for the Cavs I know we have James Harden and Donovan Mitchell running
the show but could Peyton Watson fit in as that role player a guy who can average 15 points like
he did last season if not more and kind of elevate this team to get over the hump and be even better
next year maybe make it past the Eastern Conference Finals but with a loaded East it's going to be
really difficult but as always remember to stay updated with the channel subscribe to stay updated
