They were just left on a street corner in a wire crate.
Betty was incredibly scared.
Animal control went to go pick her up.
We found out through our rescue
that they were looking for a place and took them in.
Me and Billy were both just so shocked
at how skinny she looked.
Her back legs and her bone area was just very protruding
because she didn't have much weight on her.
What we also noticed was her babies
were so plump and full.
We knew right away she was probably a really good mom
because even though she was starving,
her babies were really well cared for.
We set up a nice quiet area for Betty and her puppies
in a bathroom, which was a really large bathroom.
And we called it Betty's apartment.
For the first 24 hours, we kind of just let her decompress
and be on her own with her babies.
And then slowly with time, we just would go in there.
We were hand feeding her too,
to try to build trust with her.
And so we'd go in there and just sit with her and her kids
and try to bond with her as time progressed.
I felt like right around day 10
is where I saw her come out
of her shell more.
That was when at that point,
we weren't needing to leash her up
and make her go outside to go to the bathroom.
she was comfortable enough to get off the porch
and she just started to show more signs of feeling
safe and secure moving about her apartment
or coming over to us when we walked in the room
instead of just cowering in the corner she would actually walk up
to us and ask for affection and
things of that nature she definitely liked to be held especially
when she felt unsure about what
was going on around her she would definitely come
and seek out comfort in that way she was the best
mother. She was so attentive to them and kept them close.
She really, really never let them
leave her side. Her puppies were very social from,
from once they started. I think that that
probably helped Betty to open up to us more
because she realized that, oh, look, they're not
getting hurt. They're getting pet really nicely
and they get these treats and they get these toys
and all this love and maybe it's not so bad here.
This is foster dog, Jessie. She looks just like
her mother, Betty. We have Andy and Jesse, Betty's puppies, left.
One is a boy and one is a girl.
Neither one of them are currently adopted,
so they're both adoptable, but Betty was adopted
by a wonderful woman, and ironically,
she literally lives just around the corner from us,
so luckily, we may be able to see Betty
from time to time just on a walk and through the
neighborhood so that'll be really nice we're both nurses
and we have busy schedules and so as much
as we love Betty we also knew what was best
for her and we wanted her to have a happy life where
she could be with her new mom all the time
