Ventura's Makers District is a walkable, creative hub dedicated to local craftsmanship. Visitors can explore a diverse array of artisanal producers, including craft breweries, wineries, cider houses, and coffee roasters, experiencing the entire production process from raw materials to the final product in a collaborative, industrial neighborhood.
Welcome to Ventura's Makers District, a neighborhood powered by creativity, craftsmanship,
and really good taste. This is where Ventura's brewers, roasters, winemakers, cider makers,
and restaurateurs are busy doing what they do best, making things from scratch. It's hands-on,
behind the scenes, and full of places where you can taste what's being made right on site. It's
an easy area to explore at your own pace. Grab a flight, sip something new, take a coffee break,
then settle in for dinner. No rush, no rules, just a lot of great stops close together. It's
where you can see some of Ventura's coolest products being created by truly local makers
that love this community. So carve out the day in your Ventura itinerary to explore.
It's well worth the visit to sample, taste, and experience truly local Ventura makers.
A great place to kick things off is Topo Topo HQ on Colt Street. This is the brewery's main
production hub. Paired with a relaxed open tap room and spacious outdoor beer garden,
it's the kind of place that works for just about anything. A casual meetup, a post-work hang,
or the start of a longer tasting adventure. There's usually a food truck on site, plenty
of seating, and a solid lineup of award-winning beers that feel right at home in Ventura. And
make sure to grab yourself some Topo Topo merch to feel like a true local. We have tanks ranging
from 175 barrels, which are the big ones down the other end, to 30 barrels which we kind of
in the middle. And then these ones closest to us are 90 barrel tanks. So making a lot of beer here
at Topo Topo, getting up to around 20,000 barrels this year. If you think about it from when we
started 10 years ago, the first year we did 350 barrels. So we've grown quite a bit. So Ventura
and the surrounding regions thirsty, which we like. Yeah, by far. It's still about 65, 68% of
what we make is chief peak. So people love their IPAs and we love to make IPAs. And we've been
really fortunate with this beer. It's been our best-selling beer since the first day we opened.
And 10 years in, still is. Cheers. Just nearby, you'll find Made West Brewing, a Ventura-born
brewery inspired by the outdoors and the West Coast lifestyle. And you can taste it in every
sip of their iconic and award-winning brews. Their Donlan Street location in the Makers District
combines a production facility with a welcoming tasting room where you can try beers that are
approachable and designed to go wherever your day takes you. Beach, trail, or backyard. Plus,
they often host live music acts and plenty of mouth-watering food trucks, making Made West
well worth a stop. Brightspark Brewing is a little bit of everything, and that's what makes it fun.
Along with the house-brewed beer, you'll also find cider, wine, kombucha, and non-alcoholic options,
plus a full restaurant. It's an easy choice when your group has different tastes or when you're
ready to turn tastings into an actual meal. Brightspark was created as a community-focused
space, and it shows. There's always something fun happening, whether it's musical bingo,
trivia night, or community meetups and workshops. Brightspark adds a whole lot of energy and local
love to the Makers District. Seaward Brewing can keep things relaxed and low-key in the best way.
This is the kind of spot where you can pop in without a plan, grab a pint, and feel immediately
comfortable. The tavern has an easygoing neighborhood feel, and the beer lineup offers
plenty to choose from without feeling overwhelming. It's a solid stop for slowing things down and
enjoying a beer made right here in Ventura. So we have a 10-barrel system here, and that
allows us to make smaller batches of things, but also with our bigger fermenters, we can do bigger
batches of things that we sell a lot more of. It kind of is just by demand. I'm making a lot more
hazy IPA often than I am making some of our smaller batch things. We just did a Kolsch that
was a collab beer, but we don't have as much of that as opposed to a bigger tank of a hazy IPA
because we know it sells. We have a couple accounts that really ask for it a lot. My favorite
beer on tap is the Baywatch. It's a red ale. I'm really proud of that one. We are probably the only
brewery in town that keeps a red ale on all year round. Last but certainly not least, Poseidon
Brewing. Poseidon Brewing rounds out the list of amazing Ventura breweries located in Makers
District. Their nautical theme perfectly fits in the vibe of Ventura's ocean community, and we think
you'll find their beer to be the perfect pint to end your tasting tour. Their space often hosts food
trucks and events, making it a great stop to build into your Makers District itinerary. It's casual,
friendly, and easy to pair with whatever else you've got planned nearby. Grab a beer, hang out
for a bit, and keep exploring. Honestly, it's got the name craft beer in it for a reason.
It's an art. It's the science. You're making a product. Technically, if you go by
the legal terms, we're called beer manufacturers, and manufacturing is making, right? I feel for
that reason. We're definitely makers. So, it's a seven barrel tank, so we'll get somewhere around
210 gallons most of the time, plus or minus. We brew once to twice a week, just depending on
sort of the burn rate and kind of that sort of thing. So, whether it's busy, like seasonal changes,
we do a lot of seasonal beers. We have a really small canning machine, so it's a single head
canner, but we do try to can the majority of the beers that we brew, so people can take it to go.
When you're ready to switch gears, The Cave is a great place to do it. Located inside Ventura Wine
Company, The Cave is unsuspecting, but oh so worth it to check out. Not only will you find an extensive
wine selection, but you'll also find a fun interactive experience to go along with it.
Grab a wine card from your server and pick which wine you'd like to self-pour from their unique
animatic wine dispenser. It's a perfect place for a relaxed dinner, a wine-focused stop, or a slower
moment in the Maker's District Tour. And now what we're going to make today, it's a steak au poivre,
pepper steak. So we're going to roll it in a black pepper. We get what we call butcher pepper, so it
has a little bit more kick to it. When that pan is hot, what we're going to do is sear that steak.
So it's got a nice singe to the steak, and that's what's going to keep it tender. So what I'm going
to do is put some shallots in there. We're going to sweat the shallots, so it's going to bring
sweetness to the shallot, which is a family of the onions. Then what we're going to do is add
some peppercorn, cognac. Now we're going to have some real stuff. It's a real stock. Butter, cream,
that's a secret of this French-American food. Bon appétit! For a caffeine break, head to Beacon Coffee.
This is both a cafe and their roasting plant, which means the coffee you're drinking is roasted right
here on site. You can smell it as soon as you walk in. Beacon focuses on thoughtful sourcing
and small batch roasting, and the space encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment. It's an
ideal morning stop or a midday reset between tastings. They host multiple coffee making
workshops and classes throughout the year, which will have you feeling like a coffee pro in no time.
Coastal Coffee Collective takes you even further behind the scenes. This specialty coffee roastery
focuses on sourcing, roasting, and packaging coffee for wholesale and private label partners,
making it a key part of the region's coffee production scene. You can try their own coffee
just across town at their coffee shop room service. It's a reminder that the Makers District
isn't just about what you taste, it's about how things are made. If cider is your thing,
or you're curious to try something new, Falcon Canyon Cider is a must. This Ventura-based cidery
offers a variety of styles from crisp and refreshing to more complex and experimental.
Their tasting room is a fun stop to exploring something a little bit different, especially if
you're pacing out a longer tasting group. And if there's one cider you have to try,
it's their Hibiscus Canyon. You will not regret it. Hey, my name is Blake. I'm the owner of
Falcon Canyon Cider, and brewer, and janitor. But yeah, we make all our ciders here at Falcon
Canyon Cidery right here in the Makers District. 100% fresh fruit ciders for you to drink with
vitamins, minerals, all the antioxidants, and get your alcohol in there too. We have our Hibiscus
Dry Ale Cider, the first one that I made before even thinking about opening a cidery. I used to
make this one at home with my friends. The main difference is instead of brewing different grains,
malting different grains, getting the sugars out of wheat or barley, we're actually a licensed
winery. So if you think about it as fermenting grape juice into grape wine, we're fermenting
apple juice into apple wine. So a 30-barrel fermentation vessel will do large batches in
controlled temperatures. At Native Bloom Winery, you'll find a cozy tasting room focused on natural,
low-intervention wines. Woman-owned and operated, Native Bloom offers approachable tastings that
highlight fresh flavors and thoughtful winemaking without feeling intimidating. It's a great stop
for discovering something local and a little unexpected. Hi, my name is Natalie Albertson.
I'm the owner and winemaker of Native Bloom Winery in the Makers District. I use more
ancestral methods, ancient ways of making wine, but with modern technology. So try to make clean
wine as naturally as possible. We do everything in-house. We're grape to glass here. People's
favorites tend to be our bubbles, our dessert wine. Rosé is always a crowd-pleaser. We also make an
orange wine, which is fun and unique. Orange wine is an ancient way of making white wine.
They made it the same way as they made red wine. So it was just leaving the juice on the skins for
a longer period of time, and the juice ends up becoming more orange. So it's not made with
oranges, it's just grapes. That and our sparkling wine. We bottle it before it finishes fermenting.
It finishes inside the bottle and creates those soft bubbles, and it's just a lovely, lovely wine.
Fermentation house is where things get especially fun. This space brings together several brands,
all made by the fermentation house, all centered around small batch fermentation. You'll find
natural wines from Dr's Orders, cider from Anna's Ciders, and sparkling hard teas from Jungle Teas,
each with their own personality. It's a great place to explore, sample a few different styles,
and try something you might not find anywhere else. We have three product lines. Dr's Orders
is our natural wine company. We also have Anna's Cider and Jungle Tea. We make all of our wines
in Ojai. We have an organic winery. We're fermenting kind of everything from the earth in Ventura
County. We grow most of our own grapes. We grow a lot of apples. So we'll be a full restaurant,
bar, winery, kind of the works. We currently have a wine and beer license for manufacturing,
which we're doing at our winery in Ojai. We are adding spirits shortly, so we'll have
the ability to ferment just about anything that you can. And this is going to be a destination
experience in Ventura where people will be able to taste exactly what it is that we can grow here
and what we can ferment here, both from the sea and from the land. Toile Fou Winery shares a space
with Leicester family cellars, offering visitors two tasting experiences in one stop. Their story
is rooted in creativity and experimentation, with a lineup of wines that reflect a hands-on
boutique approach. It's personal, a little quirky, and very much in the spirit of the
This is our 21 Syrah. In 2020, this same Syrah took a gold medal at the Orange County
Wine Competition. We think it's probably as good, if not better. It does get better with age. We
really focus on the wine specifically. If you come here, we put a lot of effort into it. We'll have
20, 24 barrels to taste and keep track of. In a big winery, the winemaker has to taste
maybe 100 of one varietal. We look at each barrel every two months and we see what does that barrel
need. Is it light on this? Does it need that? What do we need to do to get it going down the right
road? So what you're going to get from us when you get here is hand-touched quality wine. Right
next door is Leicester Family Cellars. They round out the shared tasting experience with small
wines and a relaxed atmosphere. Together, the two wineries make it easy to park once,
taste twice, and enjoy a slower, more intimate wine experience right in the heart of the district.
Leicester Family Cellars in the tasting room. We're a family-owned, family-operated,
small, cozy winery. We get our grapes from the Paso Robles area. It's where we like to taste,
so that's where we get our grapes from. Yeah, just a very nice, comfortable place to come and
hang out. We usually average about 20 tons, which is going to come out to about 40 barrels
a year. For us, it's between three and four years. I think the standard is about 15 months.
We keep it what's called tight. We don't rack. We don't do what some other people do,
and so it takes a little longer to get that maturity out of our wine.
Another great reason to come, you get two wineries in one spot, right? Yeah. Once you
taste at ours, you go right next door and taste the Toile Faux. Last but certainly not least,
Wheelhouse Cannabis offers a modern, welcoming dispensary experience right in the Makers
District. With a wide selection and knowledgeable staff, it's a convenient stop for visitors
interested in exploring Ventura's cannabis scene responsibly, whether you're picking
something up for later or just curious to learn more. Hi, my name is Sergio, owner of Wheelhouse.
It's going great. We have won six years in a row Best Cannabis Retailer in Ventura County.
A lot of my employees are very excited about it, the whole movement behind it and the whole
points of what we're trying to build here in this community. They call it kind of light
industrial, so we wanted to fill a place where you can park somewhere and walk at all the locations
and experience what we can provide in this district. The Makers District is Ventura at work,
creative, collaborative, and full of people who care about what they make. It's a neighborhood
built for exploring, tasting, and discovering something new. So take your time,
follow your curiosity, and see where it leads.
