Come aboard an Island Packers boat for a day exploring the waters between Ventura Harbor and Channel Islands National Park.

We started in Ventura Harbor before heading into the Santa Barbara Channel, where we spotted harbor seals, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and humpback whales along the way. The trip also included views of Anacapa Island and its iconic Arch Rock, with lunch from Frontside Cafe enjoyed out on the water.

The Santa Barbara Channel stretches between the Southern California mainland and the Channel Islands. Its mix of deep water, nutrient-rich currents and protected habitats supports an extraordinary variety of marine life, making it one of the best places on the West Coast to see whales and dolphins.

In 2023, the channel was internationally recognized as the Santa Barbara Channel Whale Heritage Area. The designation celebrates the region’s commitment to responsible wildlife tourism, conservation, education, research and the cultural connection between local communities and cetaceans.

Parts of the journey also travel through Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, which protects 1,470 square miles of ocean surrounding the northern Channel Islands.

From the wildlife sightings to the island views, this is what a whale-watching trip from Ventura can look like.
