I travelled across America by sleeper train, spending almost 3 days on the rails, covering over 3,100 miles from New York City to Seattle!
Join me on an epic journey across the United States aboard two of Amtrak's most famous long-distance trains — the Lake Shore Limited and the Empire Builder.
Along the way, I'll show you what it's really like travelling across America by train, from my private sleeper cabins and onboard dining to the incredible scenery, unexpected moments and the reality of spending nearly 65 hours on the rails.
But is travelling across America by sleeper train actually worth it? And could it be better than flying?
From New York to Chicago and all the way to Seattle, this is one train adventure I won't forge.
I'm about to take one of the longest train
journeys I've ever done across the entire
continental United States.
Across 11 states, traveling 3,165 miles and living on board for
three days. I'll show you what life is like on board from my cabin,
the food and so much more.
And this epic adventure starts here in New York
at the beautiful Monaghan train station,
train 49. It already tells me
my car number and which room I'm
in so let's head in.
So I do have access into the lounge
which is literally just up there but I've shown
that before on a previous video so I'm gonna get straight on board.
This
still
looks
pretty
old
though.
Where you going?
And
Well, Chicago?
Chicago, all the way
to the back, last car.
It looks like it's a double-decker but it's not quite like that.
I'll show you why.
Sleeper?
Yeah.
A?
A as in apple?
What's the name?
Tim?
Around the corner, Tim.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard train 49.
Sure limited bound for Chicago.
Here we go.
7.30, 8 o'clock.
Those are your reservation times, so please have a look after me.
It is community season,
so more than likely you'll be sitting with someone.
Your bills are free, mate, nothing giving up.
I think she's giving up.
Hello, I'm Melanie, I'm your attendant, I'll be with you shortly.
Have a look at the menu.
Cool, thank you.
Get a side salad, ranch or Italian on the side,
dessert choice, brownie or butter cake, okay?
Okay.
And let me know if you're going to eat in your room
or if you want to eat in our dining car.
And let me know what time.
Thank you.
I've done Amtrak before.
You don't normally get the menu when you get on board.
You don't normally get that until you actually get in the dining car.
I'll show you that in a minute.
I'll wait until we pull out the station
when we've got a little bit more light
and I'll do the room tour.
Okay we're on our way across the entire United States.
This is going to be crazy.
Thousands of miles and only on two trains.
So this train is going to take me to Chicago which
should arrive around about half past 10 tomorrow morning.
I'll get a chance to do a little bit of
sightseeing and then we'll be boarding the train that will
then take us to Seattle.
So it's Friday evening now
and we should arrive around four o'clock Monday afternoon.
So yeah quite a long time. Let me give you a tour.
Some of this train for less than 24 hours.
The next train that I'm going to get I'll be on there longer so I don't
want to get too settled but I've already got my pillows for sleeping.
If you've been watching the channel for a while you'll know
that I've done a couple of Amtrak trains.
This is very similar to what I've had before. Some are dirtier.
summer cleaner this is obviously quite old
but it seems to be one of the cleanest that i've done so
first up we've got the seating area this also acts as a bed
and so does the one up top don't quote me
on the date of this train but i think it's over
10 years old i'm sure someone will tell me in the
comments obviously a lot of this stuff is pretty dated
but it is clean and this is actually quite
comfy and although the view is not that great looking at your sink
which i'll come to in a minute
You can check out the view that way,
and you can check out the view that way, as well as up top.
So loads of light.
I've got my door, and this one does lock.
I had one before where it didn't.
A curtain that goes across my little wardrobe.
Couple of hangers in there to hang a coat,
there's a light in there too.
Call for the attendant now, I've got my AC, it's blasting out nicely.
Some lighting here, more AC there. Love the little leather armrest.
So on the sleeper train there's loads
of different room types that you can get.
This one is the most expensive, it's the bedroom
and it can actually be, there's a door there
and you can actually have it as
like quite a big bedroom and if you're traveling with the family.
Obviously the sink. Hopefully there's hot water.
I've been on Amtrak before where I've had no hot
water. I've been on Amtrak before where
the shower hasn't worked so it'll be interesting
to see if that works.
Got a plug socket there, lighting, got towels, a little cupboard,
light does work, a little hook here to hang your coat.
There's storage up there,
there's storage also right at the back there
and the bed which will come down later on.
We can open up some more light here
if I want.
So there's loads
of natural light coming in.
I'm not sure how this comes down.
Hang on.
Is there instructions how to bring this down?
Might have to get some help.
The main reason why people love these bedrooms
is because you get your own private shower.
Some of the roommates, you have to like share a shower,
which we'll show you later on in the video.
But this is quite roomy.
But my experience in these have never been that great.
Oh dear.
Stay.
So it's a wet room with your toilet.
There's some towels up there.
I hope that's cleaning rather than soap suds from a previous
person. Maybe? I don't know.
Toilet roll is covered otherwise it will get wet. I think
it's just one person that can squeeze in here.
The last few times I've traveled on Amtrak,
the shower has been pointless, the pressure has been pointless,
and the temperature has been pointless.
So we'll see what this is like later on.
As you can see floor space wise there isn't too much of it.
There's still quite a lot but it just
means that you have to travel light
but if you've got bigger cases you can store them
but you have to store them quite far away from your room.
Apparently you step on this
there you go and it
also comes with a table that extends.
And also a chessboard.
So it's five, six and seven to choose for dinner.
I've chose six o'clock, middle, probably quite busy.
And you do have to sit with other people.
So if you are traveling on your own,
and even if you are in a couple,
sometimes they sit you on like a pod of four.
Here's tonight's dinner menu.
So we've got salad to start.
We've got slow braised beef.
We've got pan artisan meatballs.
Buttered chicken, Asian barbecue glazed salmon,
I think you can probably tell which one I'm going
to go for, and then there's chicken alfredo.
I'm going to go for the salmon. Asian barbecue
sauce, broccoli, lemongrass, scented rice,
shiitake mushroom, carrots, peppers, sounds
pretty good that. One thing that I've always
been quite impressed about and that's the food.
Especially the desserts.
There's two options for dessert.
There's vanilla butter cake and there's chocolate brownie.
If you've never tried butter cake, you are missing out.
It is divine, obviously very fattening, very sweet.
I'm gonna have that.
Meals are all included.
The soft drinks are included, but you can get some alcohol.
You have to pay for it after you get your complimentary one
at the beginning.
We're heading west.
And it's fall at the moment in New York autumn.
There was some early season snow reported further up near Montana
as we get through there.
Whether that's still going to be around when I go through, I doubt it.
I think most of the trip is going to be pretty mild.
It's only
been an hour.
We left New York and we're literally just cruising up
the Hudson basically.
I think the next stop is going to be Poughkeepsie.
It's crazy when you look at it on the map, right?
That's where we are at the minute.
And we're heading right across the United States.
It got dark pretty quick,
so just after six o'clock,
which means it's dinner time,
my allocated slot.
They normally go around shouting the next meal service, but they
haven't. So I'm just assuming that it's okay and ready to go.
Let's go check it out.
Okay, Tim from the future here.
Just quickly want to talk about something that's a little bit personal
and you may have noticed whilst watching my videos.
And I do get a few comments about it and that's my hair.
As I've been getting older, I've noticed that I've been getting
a little bit thin on top and Gabby especially has noticed.
pointed it out to me many times.
So I've decided to explore my options and as you see me and my
hair on camera so much I thought I would share what I'm about to do.
I'm partnering up with Boy
previously manual to start my hair care journey.
Now I've only just started so
I'm not going to be able to see any results just yet
and it's too early to say whether it'll work
out for me but their trust pilot reviews and their before
and after patient photos on their website
gives you a good idea of the results others have achieved.
Voi offers a free online assessment
which their clinical team reviews and assesses.
They have over 30 different options depending on
your case, lifestyle, budget and preferences
so you can have something tailor-made for you. Now
because I'm traveling so much what appealed
to me was starting the process online without
Having to go to a pharmacy or waiting around
in a clinic's waiting room.

Smell dinner.
Obviously I need to be, it must be in the next car.
All right.
Well, it's pretty quiet, so I've got the table to myself.
Starting off with a drink. I've got a salad and a bread roll.
For the main I have gone for the
salmon so I'm looking forward to this.
Some people might find it uncomfortable but I do kind of enjoy
just like sitting at a table
and meeting new people for the first time and having a conversation
over a meal. It can be a little bit awkward though
while you know you're eating but it's not for
everyone. Real stainless steel cutlery.
The plates however though are plastic.
Thank you. You're welcome.
this smells amazing let's give this a try
that's good almost tastes like a hot honey
oh a little bit of a kick to it as well melts
in your mouth it tastes really good so we're just
coming up to our first half decent stop albany
and we're going to be here for about 45 minutes
i can't get off the train because i
was in another dinner otherwise i would have got off and had a
walk around but it's not really much
at the station really you can't go wrong
with this butter cake
Thank you.
So good, not moving about much.
Certainly gonna, I think I'm gonna put a little bit
of weight on this train.
Always makes me nervous stepping outside the train
for any amount of time when we're here
for such a short time because I'm always worried
it's gonna go without me so I'm gonna go back in.
Certainly a short stay anyway.
Now it's handy to know they've got a coffee station
and somewhere to get some water.
This is the communal shower.
Looks a little bit better than mine actually, I'm not going to lie.
I always forget I can open it by doing that.
I thought I'd gone too far then.
Dinner was really good.
So now it's time for a shower and then bed.
Now obviously I've got the option of the top or the bottom.
Now depending on who you are,
you sleep better on the top than you do the bottom.
Or some people say you sleep better
on the bottom than you do on the top.
It's going to move around a lot.
I'm not a very good sleeper on the train.
And not to mention, all these do bang and rattle.
So I've brought some earplugs with me as well.
The beds are made and I tell you what
when you get up close to the walls you see just
how dirty they are.
I mean there's bits of there's bits of food everywhere.
Well aboard Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited train 49
en route to Chicago's Union Station.
Once again our next station stop will be
Skanectyin in about 20 minutes.
Right ah there we go.
Temperature's actually okay now it's running it's
not super hot but
It wasn't bad, actually, as the shower went on,
the hotter the water got.
Let's go check out the beds.
Well, two options for sleeping, down here or up there.
I'll check what that feels like in a minute,
but I can adjust the lighting
to have it romantic.
There's a blue light.
Obviously, I'll just turn these off.
I can dim them, have them super bright,
the reading light on, off.
This seems pretty comfy.
Let's go and check out up the top.
Obviously, slightly bigger bed down there,
narrower up here.
I don't think it makes a difference.
In some ways it feels more, it feels worse at the bottom
than it does at the top but I mean literally
the whole toilet thing is shaking off the walls.
The door to next door is shaking, the cabinets are shaking.
I mean yeah I know it's a train
but it's like thank god I've got my earplugs.
Loads of storage up there and above the toilet.
These are supposed to um keep you in so you don't fall out.
Whack your hand on that in the middle of the night.
I don't know what's worse. They're both
like that. And then there's the bottom bunk.
When you look at the mattress, it's quite thin. It's
like a mattress topper because you've got all that.
This mattress is pretty thick. And yeah,
seen better days. Morning.
I slept okay last night.
I think once we got out of Pennsylvania,
the track definitely got a lot better and smoother.
The only issue I had was the toilet.
So somehow the toilet door has locked and I can't open it
and obviously I didn't want to call the
attendant at like two in the morning so I had to get up
and walk all the way down like seven
or eight carriages to find a toilet because I couldn't find one.
I need some coffee.
So overnight we traveled through three states Massachusetts,
Pennsylvania, Ohio and we've literally just crossed
into the state of Indiana.
I got for breakfast then Continental,
crepes, or a three cheese omelette.
Okay, we've departed Baltimore, Indiana.
Next stop, approximately 50 minutes, 5-0 minutes, can be inserted.
So I went for the Continental breakfast,
which was a breakfast sandwich,
which was sausage, egg, and cheese on a bagel, fruit loops,
And some orange juice.
Could have gone for a coffee as well.
And I have to say, that blueberry muffin was hot.
And they gave me some butter as well, and I stuck that on there.
Wow, that tasted amazing.
So far, the food has been pretty good.
It'll be interesting to see what happens on our next train.
so i'm not showing you too much of the train
because we don't have too much time because
we're going to be pulling into Chicago in a little bit
but the next train that i'm going on
the Empire Builder so i'll show you the whole tour tomorrow
so we're in Indiana at the moment
we're going to cross over the state to head
into Chicago in about an hour's time and then we've got
a little bit of time before i have to get my next train
so we might do a little bit of sightseeing
we're about an hour and 20 minutes away from Chicago
and in 40 minutes we should be crossing
We're crossing over to Central Time.
I was on that train
for 19 hours and 20
minutes, so we've got
a layover of about
4 hours, find
somewhere to dump my bags,
and then we'll go and have a quick look round Chicago.
Wow.
Has that been in an accident, or what? That's hit something.
Look at that. In fact, yeah,
that's definitely hit something.
Some of these trains are really battered and used.
When you're sandwiched between two trains like this,
you can smell some pretty gross stuff.
You've got old,
you've got new.
Look at that.
That guy
loves
the horn.
Something we don't have in the UK,
carousels for bags at the train station.
He loves the horn,
that guy.
So you can see where I started, New York.
And we headed up this way, went past Lake Erie
and we're now here and all I've got to do left is go
right across the rest of the states all the way up
to Seattle. Union Station is pretty impressive.
Oh just here. I step up get your wristband.
This will allow you access to come in and out.
Okay. Luggage storage to your right, restrooms are to your left
and the snacks and beverages
are complimentary, okay?
Great, thank you.
Thank you.
So this is what I'm heading on next,
the legendary Empire Builder to Seattle.
Oh.
Complimentary snacks and
coffee, you can relax
and watch an old movie. Look, wow,
look at that.
Don't make him like
that anymore.
Let's head out.
You can see the classic trains
and here you can see all of the iconic trains that Amtrak do.
So you can see where we're about to go,
Chicago, Minneapolis, Glacier Park and Seattle.
We did that one last year from San Francisco to Chicago.
And of course the one we've just done, Lake Shore Limited, Chicago.
There are other ones that you can do,
City of New Orleans that goes from Chicago to Orleans.
The Capital Limited, Chicago to Washington DC
and the Southwest Chief from Chicago to LA.
We're heading to something I've always wanted to see.
I've never been in Chicago long enough
and that's the lakefront
and also the famous shiny bean here in Chicago.
It's a 20 minute walk
that way so let's go.
Using the maps it's
not that far from here.
I can see it just through those trees.
You can't guarantee the weather
and I was hoping that I'd be able to see this on a clear
blue sky day when the sun's out because it's, it looks more striking.
I've only ever seen this in movies and on photos and do you know what,
it's, it's actually
smaller in real life than I thought it would be.
We've got
to do what
everyone does
and touch it.
Trippy.
So I'm just walking down to the lakefront
and then I came across this building with these
stones in the wall and noticed that's
from the Great Pyramid of Giza. That's from St Peter's
Cathedral in Rome
and that is from the Houses of Parliament in England. How random!
And here we are, Ohio Street Beach.
This was the closest one
to Union Station.
So this is my first time to one of the Great Lakes in America.
I've always wanted to visit
Lake Michigan. I mean it is so huge.
I mean from where I am right now it doesn't really show off
the lake as much as it could do because of the breakwater
but it's got a great shot of Chicago.
Sears Tower, sandy beach. How warm is the water?
Do you know what's really weird? Your senses.
Being from the UK when I'm by a beach and water it's the sea,
the ocean and you get that smell.
Here, you don't get anything,
bearing in mind in the winter this gets so cold, there's like
little mini icebergs and this can freeze in the winter, it's insane.
Someone's having a photo shoot over there,
that woman in the dress, can you see that?
Well I thought I would jump on a bike
and I would cycle to get some lunch.
So Chicago is famous for its hot dogs.
And it's also famous for its humongous deep dish pizza,
which is basically like a pie.
I think a lot of the places you have to like order ahead
and it takes about 30 minutes to cook it,
but you can get it by the slice.
And I'm going to try and find one now because they look amazing.
Pretty fattening, but I'm going to try one.
Look at that. Apparently this is one of,
or if not the most
haunted hotel in Chicago,
the Congress Plaza Hotel.
Just look at that.
I'm eating it on the street because it was just too busy in there but
let's give this a try. I mean it's ridiculous.
There was so much cheese on that.
It's like that thick full of cheese. That's good.
It's good.
731 Sleeper Room, A as in Apple Store, hand toilet.
The other train that looked like it was a double decker,
this is a full-on double decker superliner.
I'm in a again a little bit different
to the other one layout wise
I mean it's still like a
sofa couch here there's a chair there
in the other one I had the toilet door there but in here
it's around the corner
and it does feel like there's just a bit more room by the toilet door
still got the fold-out table first impressions
though yeah leather leather seats
but it's really dirty in here there's crumbs
everywhere all over here especially the amount
of money that you spend on these i just hope
that the water is going to be hot i mean these
don't look like they've been vacuumed hoovered
at all crumbs and food all on here that's really bad
it's quite an old train
then but still got
a closet here my wardrobe
is slightly bigger
Lightstemperature
Nice leather.
It's nice leather.
Yeah it does look quite old doesn't it?
If you're charging your phone you need a really long wire,
hardly any soap left in there.
Let's have a look in the shower,
yep same size as the other one
although this one does come with shampoo,
body wash, it's quite nice,
fluffy towels up there.
And you're thrown to bathroom size pretty much the same.
I think you're not going to get any more than well
Actually, maybe you might be able to get two in here at a squeeze
But I think the reason why it feels
a little bit bigger is because I'm right at the end
I mean, yeah, it's a bit old and grubby in places
and it definitely needs a hoover at least there's somewhere where I can
Store my luggage without getting it in the way
Even though the other one felt older, it was a lot cleaner
It's like there's crumbs everywhere in here.
It does feel like a bit of a disconnect, doesn't it?
You get your first class service,
you get the lounge, which is amazing,
and then you get in here and it's quite dirty, shame.
And we're off on our 2,200 mile journey.
We're gonna cross eight states, three different time zones.
We're going to pass through the Cascade Mountains,
the Glacier National Park, or near there anyway.
So I'm on here for two days.
Now that it's just after half past three,
I don't think there's lunch, but there is a snack bar here.
There's a viewing car as well, which is quite cool.
And obviously there's a restaurant car as well.
So there'll be dinner tonight, breakfast, lunch and dinner tomorrow,
and then breakfast and maybe lunch before I arrive in Seattle.
It's really weird when you look out the window,
you don't feel that you're up high compared to when you're lower down,
it doesn't feel any different.
I don't know why there's a flannel been shoved in there,
maybe I'll find out why later.
Not gonna lie, this is comfy and the leather does feel much nicer.
Now actually the sun's coming in, it doesn't actually feel that bad.
So dinner's in about 45 minutes,
but I'll give you a full tour of the train that I'm in tomorrow.
There is a break tonight where you can get out and walk around,
a fresh air break as they call it but
that's going to be quite late so I'll probably get out of bed before that.
I'm looking forward to seeing how
the bed
compares to
last night
as well.
So this time
dinner was
community
seating
so you had to
sit with other people and as I was just traveling alone I had
to sit with three others. The food
as always was pretty good.
I went for coconut shrimp to start followed by the chicken which
Which tasted like...
Chips sticks on the top
and then the dessert I went for the white chocolate cobbler cheesecake
I've got a laptop with me and some other camera gear
and I do have to leave it in the room
But there is no lock on the door.
You can lock it from the inside, but you can't lock it from the outside
So I guess you have to trust your neighbors
Well, the bed has been made pretty much
the same size same width as the other one
I don't know whether the leather makes it
a little bit more comfortable. Not sure
Lots of padding so you don't knock your head,
I don't know if you can see that.
So we're literally on the border of Wisconsin,
we've just crossed over the border to Minnesota
and I think we're going to gain another hour as well overnight.
I'll let you know how I sleep, see you in the morning.
Morning,
well last night was pretty rocky and yeah it
was quite tough to sleep last night.
Generally I think I slept better than I did last night but...
The rattling is in different places
so yeah thank god I've got earplugs though because that really
does soften it a little bit you can still hear it
but it's not as bad and it's easier to sleep
if I hadn't had them I didn't have earplugs
then yeah the rattling would be um and then it doesn't
it's really it's funny because it doesn't stay
in one place like at the minute it's over there
but then sometimes it will get really bad like over here
not quite sure why I think
I think we're about to gain another hour soon.
And a full day on the train.
I'm struggling with room in here at the minute like my bags either
side and a very small area just by the door there's
that tiny area there by the chair
and when the other bed's down there's two people in here this would be
a struggle. I mean it's a struggle for me
as it is just getting through here and
just like trying to wash my face but that's the size of these trains.
Sun's just coming up and right now we're pretty much halfway there
I would say or just over actually, we're now in North Dakota.
Can I go for the Amtrak French toast, please, with a side of bacon?
OK.
I didn't make that decision.
Can I get an orange juice, please?
OK.
Thank you.
So it's not too busy,
but they still insisted on me sitting with other people.
I did ask if I could just sit on my own
while there's no one else around,
which they didn't really like,
but I've managed to get a seat on my own anyway.
But I've managed to get a seat on my own anyway.
Fresh air break for the first time
in god knows how many hours we're at Milan.
It's crazy when you see
the outside of the train like this.
We're here for 45 minutes and they're actually doing some
refueling at the minute and normally I can never actually get
to the front of the train because I
always get stopped, let's see if I can get there now have
a have a look what's been pulling us
It's crazy just how long the train is.
I mean, I don't know whether you can see down there,
but as far as your eye can see,
the train
stretches,
unless
that's
something
else.
Imagine if I got it wrong and he said four to five minutes,
because I've left my phone and everything on there,
because they're refueling.
I want to go up on the bridge,
see if I can get a better shot of the train.
It's currently 8.30
in the morning.
There's the train.
Please tell me that's not our train.
I'm going to run back, but there's our train from above.
I better run, just in case.
I'm sure that wasn't our train, but never mind.
I'm having my nightmare,
missing the train and then stuck here with no money,
no nothing. Let's grab a coffee
and then I'll give you a tour of the train.
Look the little station where you get your cream
and sugar.
To take it, you can buy one of these.
This Seattle Skyline, look at that.
You know you should definitely do this journey
if it's a special day for you like it's your birthday
or maybe celebrating Christmas or New Year's Eve
or something because you gain an hour um pretty
much every day so we're gonna go into mountain time
in about three hours where clocks will go
back an hour and then the early hours
of the morning tomorrow we'll go into pacific time
and we'll put the clocks back another hour.
Not great for my jet lag but makes the day longer.
Especially if you like being on trains.
Okay, let's do a little bit of a tour of my carriage.
We'll start upstairs actually.
Oh, just before I go further,
these are the roomettes.
They're actually quite nice and obviously this comes down
so you can have a bed up there as well
as this folds out into a bed too.
But charging, reading lights,
it's cleaner than my room.
The only downside is they don't come with the toilet.
We can go down here,
and then it saves me going through the restaurant, I think.
Maybe
not.
Let's go in here.
Oh right, so we've got,
that was actually
a really big
communal shower.
headroom down there.
And then these are just toilets on there.
I do have to go through the restaurant, can't I?
To get to the observation deck.
Or observation car.
All right.
Imagine if you get
your foot caught in there.
It'd be painful, innit?
The observation deck is split up into two parts the seating
outwards and then the general communal seating.
So the seats are all positioned
in different ways to enjoy most of the
scenery. There's
a bar up here as well.
Obviously
this part isn't that busy at the moment because
well the view isn't that exciting.
We're going to go through the Rockies later this afternoon
and I think that's when this will get
very busy. Pretty cool the way they arrange
their seats like this though in different angles it's
quite nice. By the way if you are enjoying
the video I'd really appreciate the thumbs up
and if you haven't already there's about 40%
of you that are still not subscribed so make
sure you do and also click the notification bell
so you know when I upload a new video.
Let's head down here, I think, I'm trying to find the cafe bar,
I don't think it's down here, or is it?
You can record 7.31 and 7.30.
No, this is where you just store your luggage.
We will open the door for the acting.
More toilets, great little dressing room.
We have some Montana coming up next.
Thank you, folks.
Wow, before you ask I knew
there was no one in here
but this is a ladies
makeup area? Oh they have a toilet in here as well.
Got a stool to sit on.
Let's check out one of these chairs.
I said they're similar to premium economy like on an aircraft but
actually they're bigger than that.
It's actually really comfy. Lights,
an AC and then your footrests.
They're pretty decent actually.
Let's find this cafe bar that should be around here somewhere.
So I think that area was closed.
Maybe it's closed until the dinner service is closed.
I'm not going to lie, walking through the train is quite smelly.
You can smell the toilets in some parts more than others.
Like for example, there's no open windows on here, so it's all AC,
hence why you get fresh air brakes.
So when you just go through like the coach part, it's a bit stuffy.
It's a bit fresher as you come through here,
but what I've noticed is that you really do smell the toilet.
And I said this last time,
I think that my neighbour has had some toilet issues
because it's smelled really bad earlier.
Or it might just be the whole sewer system of the train, I don't know.
This is Glasgow,
Montana and the tagline reads
in the middle of nowhere.
This place is pretty small and actually it's
four and a half hours away
from the nearest big town stroke city.
So if you're still hungry between breakfast
and lunch and lunch and dinner,
There is a snack bar open, this is also open for coach passengers.
Now if meal times are getting to you
and you don't want to be sitting there with strangers
making conversation all the time,
you can actually order food to your room.
So I'm going to do that for lunch and I've ordered a caesar salad,
a bit of a dessert
and a coke, so let's see what it looks like.
Okay lunch is served, caesar salad,
coke and also a brownie.
Caesar dressing, knife and fork,
some pepper, tomatoes on a Caesar salad.
Smells good though.
So you don't have to do the community seating
if you don't want to if you're here with somebody
else. I think the worst time to do it is at breakfast
when you've just woken up and maybe you
don't want to chat. I got lucky this morning even
though they were trying to force me onto a table
or two that were already there a couple
and I was like it's gonna invade their space a little bit so
We've just arrived in Havre, Montana,
and I think this is probably going to be the last fresh air break
of the day, whilst it's daylight at least.
It's that time
again, dinner.
Let's see
what's
on offer
tonight.
We're here
for dinner,
on the other side.
Sir, now, is that where you're here?
Oh, this one here?
Yeah, this one here, yeah.
I've been on Amtrak trains before
and normally they change the menu but tonight it was the
same menu as last night.
I skipped the starter tonight
and I went straight for the main course which was the steak which
tasted amazing.
It had this beautiful red wine sauce
and they've run out of the cheesecake but I was very happy
with the chocolate cake which was absolutely divine.
So a little bit gutted because it's getting dark
and I thought we would probably get to
Glacier Park.
Just on the outskirts and then over towards the Rocky Mountains
when it was still light but that
looks like that's now not going to happen.
And that was one of the parts of the trip that I
was looking forward to the most.
I mean I've been lucky enough to travel across
the Rocky Mountains a couple of times actually by Amtrak
and the Canadian so I'm a little bit
glad I can't see it this time
but I'll be heading over it as I sleep. So yeah,
Not much else to see now, so I'm off to bed
and I'll see you in the morning for the final stretch.
We might get some views in the morning actually,
for the final stretch to Seattle.
So I'm off to bed, good morning.
Good morning from Washington State,
our 12th final state as we head towards Seattle.
Scenery here looks a lot different to what it was like yesterday.
We've crossed over the Rocky Mountains overnight,
the Glacier National Park.
Let's go get some breakfast.
So this morning's breakfast,
I went for scrambled eggs and bacon.
I have to say, the food on board has been amazing.
Those scrambled eggs, I think, were cooked fresh.
So our last stretch to Seattle,
we should get in about 11.30.
I think the time now is about nine o'clock,
so last couple of hours.
And the scenery looks
a lot different today.
So I thought I would spend the last couple of hours
at the observation car, but they've taken it off.
They've taken it off at the part where it's going to be most scenic.
Quite fun actually.
So yeah, back to my room to look out the window then.
Bye
room.
Hey,
have
a
good
day.
Thank
you.
Thank you so much for everything,
so much appreciated.
Well we actually arrived
15 minutes early.
Well that was an epic trip
and a half hours on two different trains across the entire
United States over 3,100 miles covering 11 different states
and you could say half of that
time I was probably asleep now depending on the time
of year that you travel you'll probably get
to see some of the views that I didn't
for example if I'd have left Seattle to go to
New York I would have definitely seen through
the Rockies and through the
Glacier National Park, however because of the time
we got through there quite late it is an expensive trip it's
on two iconic trains the Empire Builder
and of course Lake Shore Limited now the longest one previous
to this was the Canadian which i'll
come to in just a little bit now being one
of the longest train journeys that i have ever done i'll
come to the price in a minute
but let's break down the first part of my journey on the Lake Shore
Limited train great thing about that is that it
was clean it was very old the food on board was great
the staff were great found some of the restaurant staff
not that friendly on that particular train
obviously they were up against it they had
a job to do they had a lot of people to sit but
they could have been just a little bit more friendlier
for example it was quite funny
actually on the first part of my trip Lake Shore Limited i put
the bed down at the top just to
kind of like just to see what it felt like
and the lady in the morning told me off
for pulling the bed down even
though it's just a sheet over the mattress but she
moaned at me because now she has to remake it even
though i've paid for the whole room
so i made sure that when i went
on the Empire Builder i didn't check out the upper bunk now
if i'm being honest the first part of the trip
the bed was quite soft the second part
The leather seats were a little bit more firmer.
The mattresses were very thin and the first one
was pretty disgusting. Now
although it looked a lot nicer than the first train, the Empire Builder
had an issue with there was a lot of food
and crumbs and I know the turnaround could be quite
quick but you would have thought for the money
that you spend they could get out a vacuum and
just like just go around it a little bit
because it is not nice when you're sitting
down in other people's crumbs
and there's food on the floor from others.
If you've been watching the channel for a while,
you'll know this is not my first time travelling Amtrak,
and the food has always been amazing.
The steak last night was great, the dessert's amazing,
the coffee in the morning, although I couldn't get it
on the first leg of the journey
because the coffee machines were broken,
the second leg, my attendant had the coffee ready for me bang on 6am,
and the coffee was hot and it was good.
I was a little bit gutted that they took
the viewing car off last night,
so when this morning we were going through some of those amazing views,
We had to just stay in our rooms, we couldn't go to the viewing car.
The cafe car had been taken off as well.
Let's talk about the community seating
because it's not everyone's cup of tea.
You can have food in your room if you don't like doing
that but what I found interesting was
if there was like four or five tables that were completely free,
obviously they were getting them set up for the next people but
there was a couple that were eating together and I felt quite...
odd about being pushed onto them really
and sitting there and eating my dinner. It's a shame
that even though there was all
these other tables free they couldn't have just moved it around a
little bit better but I'm sure they have
their reasons why they do it. But it's always great to
meet complete strangers on board
and by the end of the trip you become friends. So how much did
it come to? The first part of my trip
on the Lakeshore Limited came to $2,028.
The second part of my trip, the Empire Builder,
which I was on for a lot longer, came to $2,365,
bringing the grand total to $4,393.
If you want to see me head across Canada in a very luxurious train
with some fantastic scenery and food, check the video here.
Or why not Amtrak's California Zephyr here?
Give the video a thumbs up.
