I Took a Sleeper Train Across Japan.

This right here is the Sunrise Express, the last remaining regularly scheduled sleeper train in Japan. And I'm about to take it, but not just tonight. I'll be on this sleeper train for the next two nights. The first night staying in the cheapest cabin and then the most expensive. It's so popular, it always sells out. And I had to pay more in resale to get these tickets. They're a lot smaller than I expected. Never had that one before. But you know what? It's not about the size. That right there is Tokyo Station. We're about to be inside it. Oh, look at this. I used to love trains when I was a kid, I had four model sets, that was it but um guys it's here it's here oh my god there it is look at everyone filming it this is a big moment guys look down there the cabins at the bottom oh my god i think that's where i'm sleeping tonight this kid is like running to get on he wants to be first on so this train is actually made up of 14 different carriages there is the front seven which i'm gonna be on going to izumo and in the back seven which go to takamatsu tonight i'm going to be going in second class but tomorrow night i'll be in first class oh oh my gosh these are the nobi nobi seats the cheapest seats you get on the train and it's kind of like a parking lot but for people this is clearly a big deal for everyone here as it is for me as well this is carriage number 11. we need to go down whoa touch the sign below to whoa finish you up okay I think my room is somewhere just about oh sorry just oh yeah okay let me put my stuff oh sorry let's go into my room first impressions there is not much space I genuinely cannot I can't turn around in it I actually can't I'm just too ******* massive I think I've done it there we go what the hell this is actually sick I'm here for this I reckon I'm gonna get a good night's sleep yeah this is not good this is really not good they have supplied the boy in the striped pajamas as soon as you manage to squeeze yourself in here which might be a struggle if you're on the larger side feels super spacious and you know what they've done really well in this train the lighting the ambient lighting this is a great oh it is official we have left Tokyo Station we are on our way to Izumo on the other side of Japan heading towards the earthquake right let's turn the lights off so you guys can see the view how do i get all of them off oh come on turn oh there we go whoa thank you finish yes uh already okay tomorrow i have shower okay don't smell me good pants fear i'm getting less funny as i get older whoa more train sets whoa these are these are cool they even got a little hero on them i like these i don't know if they're gonna fit me though they kind of go with the fit now before i give you a proper tour of my room not that there's a huge amount to show i wanted to explore the rest of the train a bit more like whoa pretty busy right now what a vibe you can just sit here have your food enjoy the view sorry it's okay it's okay just showing the lounge car you have some good food okay okay sorry everyone's pretty nice in here making some friends you know shower card thing has been found it only accepts coins i do not have any coins on me it's also sold out apparently they sell out really quickly not to worry though because tomorrow night the room that i'm staying in oh gets a shower included ooh vending machine i love a good japanese vending machine but i must say this doesn't have the widest selection we have some natural mineral water green tea coffee coca-cola looks like a japanese red bull this is usually the bit where you pay with your card or your Suica card but i think it only takes cash so i'm pretty far i am very very very hungry but i want to show you the room first and then we're going to try and eat in the lounge cool i didn't lock my room anyways i have faith in the japanese people they're not going to steal anything there are two types of rooms in this carriage and it's quite clever how they do it i'm down the bottom here in number nine and then this bit up here is actually another room and i can show you because i don't think there's anyone in here this room is directly above me time for the room tour i've just had the realization that you should probably sit down and then close the door simple once you're actually in the room it feels kind of spacious this is miles better than the sleep pod that i took on the night jet we've then got some buttons to adjust the lights signaling morse code to help me, that is some cozy ---- right there and we have the time plus an alarm, there is an SOS button, probably shouldn't so tempting down here, there is this little plastic bag which could be for rubbish or could be for my shoes, i don't know actually, but i'm gonna go with my shoes for now, my favorite thing so far is these pajamas, oh my god, it's like a Scrooge gown, this may look like an ordinary pillow, i can tell you this is not an ordinary pillow, can you hear that? this pillow is filled with beads because i think maybe it's a common thing here in Japan, i love it and then we have a duvet which is very thin but it's quite warm on here, talking of warm we have an air conditioning thing up here which is blowing nice cold air, there is also a blow, oh i like this pattern, what are we saying about this pattern, feeling kind of like Art Deco-y, really nice now i was getting hungry and this train doesn't actually serve any food, but i had somehow remembered this and got myself some food from a convenience store at the station, i was excited to sit in the train's cozy lounge and enjoy my feast, i'm really quite enjoying this lounge car i'll be honest to you, it's nice and small, i feel like no one boards it because they know there's probably someone else waiting to use it, apparently you're not meant to rub your chopsticks together like get rid of splinters because you're basically saying that their chopsticks are cheap, but this was from Myanma, so these are getting furiously rubbed together and actually see splinters of wood coming off them, the salmon dish was delicious but that sushi platter on the other hands yeah i didn't particularly enjoy that one i then wanted to explore a bit more of the train i walked through the carriage that has the nobi nobi seats and the next carriage that had two floors i don't know what kind of room this is but it's a lot better than mine don't worry and now for the part which is literally the whole point of this train to sleep my goal for tonight is to try and get over eight hours of sleep i'll be happy with seven and a half but i want eight that's that's the goal my carriage had two sink areas with a little curtain for privacy you can brush your teeth there wash your hands face or anywhere else i probably wouldn't wash my whole body there though could be inappropriate i love trains in general but being able to sit in my own private space and see the japanese night flash by my window reminded me why sleeper trains are so cool i read my book as i usually do to fall asleep but i didn't fall to sleep as i usually do oh no i've been bitten by something i don't know if you can see feeling slightly itchy ah this is really not good let's see if we can find anything there's gotta be something in hindsight i don't think there was anything on my sheets but i think it stressed me out so much that i then slept terribly i just kept waking up and to make matters worse i was parched all i wanted was a drink of water we were getting closer to okayama station where the train physically splits in two now this was good timing as i was about to die of thirst and i was just praying they would have a vending machine on the platform however i needed to make sure that i could get the water and get back on the train before my half the front half left me because if it did i would be pretty but first if any of you guys watching have quick quick quick quick which one's my train welcome train fans some serious i was too scared to miss the train that i didn't even see the train split i retreated back to my cabin with my holy water and admired the early morning views and tried to sleep some more before we arrived at Izumo good morning everyone i feel pretty bad i feel like i'm hungover sleep deprived i'm tired i feel good but luckily tonight i'm gonna be sleeping in the nicest room on this train so hopefully my sleep will improve some nice views behind us right now he is the view okay we have made it to izumo the next eight hours were all mine to explore and despite being very far from home i managed to find something from home a hidden gem of a cafe dedicated to the beatles the food was simple but delicious and i got to watch the owner cook it in front of me of course whilst listening to the beatles i sadly said goodbye to my new friend and took a taxi to a very famous beach it is believed this is where all the gods meet every year to decide the fates of everybody in japan i collected some sand to then take to a very important shrine here after washing my hands i made my prayers paid my respects got my book signed and swapped out the sand from the beach for the sacred sand that i would take home with me to scatter around my house to ward off misfortune i then had time for one last visit to the beatles cafe before walking over to the station ahead of my train back to Tokyo I'm now waiting for my ride back to Tokyo and it's going to be a little bit different this time because we're traveling in first class in a single deluxe room there is six different seat classes on this train cheapest are the Nobi Nobi seats the ones we saw last night up from that you have the cheapest ways to get a private cabin which is what I stayed in last night and it costs this much I paid about 279 because I bought it for a resale company moving up from that we have a single second class sleeper which is basically the same as last night's room just a bit more spacious above that is a single twin in second class which has an upper bunk and a lower bunk there is then the Sunrise Twin which has two beds side by side at the top the penthouse of the train not literally I don't actually know if it's like at the top the single deluxe first class this room has cost me 28,000 yen that being said that is the price I would have paid if I got the tickets when they actually got released on the website and I didn't pay 699 to get them on resale wait I have overpaid for this by like four times wow look at it go as I was about to get onto the train I f***ed up big time guys I just dropped my microphone down here oh no no that has so many files on no no no no no no no no no please please please what's my microphone like the microphone went down oh down down yeah I can't believe it I can't believe I just said that I have so many clips on there that I need for this video like stored on the microphone hello do you get on this train? Yes, ah no no sorry, yes here there it is guys i hope the train doesn't leave without them i don't know what i'd rather do get on the train or get the microphone back i rather don't guys oh no i'm scared i'm gonna delay the whole train and we are off slightly late and that would be entirely my fault sorry everybody on the train 26. whoa oh my days no way what i've got my own desk let's just ignore the fact i delayed the whole train and uh talk about my room i have i i can do push-ups i'm probably not going to but i can if i want and my bed is so much bigger as well still have the boy stripe pajama pajamas still have a beanbag pillow we've actually got slippers this time pretty awesome we have a hanger up here i think this is a cupboard which is locked we have a chair and a desk this is so cool i'm gonna be able to sit and uh just contemplate my actions got a knock at my door uh-oh the headmaster's here hello ah yes yes yes yes yes thank god it's not the headmaster oh goodie bag oh amenities thank you very much it was not the headmaster it was santa claus because we have just got a present oh this is cool we have our own sunrise express bag worth 699 i think so um right let me flip you around and show you sanitary bag a razor i actually do need to shave so that will come in handy towel for the shower whoa wash moisture face care lotion shampoo a little jr box this is really cool actually what's inside though beauty soap hairbrush cotton and hair band a shower card oh this right here is the infamous shower card which is probably already sold out i'm pretty sure it sells out like within the first couple of minutes but if you are in one of the first class rooms i believe you get a shower card included so i'm gonna get to shower later this room is actually sick i can't get over it there is nothing special about this room it's just the fact we're in japan and everything they do it's just so good actually no i lied and you know what is really special about this room and what i absolutely love is these curved windows wow that is sick this is actually so cool i'm essentially on a double decker bus but a train on the top floor and i've got a curved window i could watch the stars at night i think that is a luxury sleeper train we're going past right now wait for it wait for it wait for it it was i'm pretty sure genuinely feel like i'm in a fever dream right now look at that green that is not real the shade of the wood and the lighting in here just makes it such a vibe i also have my own personal sink and a massive mirror to look at myself i can shave in here this is ideal wow 10 points to gryffindor if you can guess what just happened i fell asleep i had a nice hour nap it's now a bit later i'm gonna shave shower and then we're gonna put on the pajamas i just realized that maybe this isn't the best idea on a moving train but it should be okay i actually give up this is not a good idea at all welcome to the shower room i have to say i'm very impressed as you can see we have all of this space there is a nice little basket to put your clothes we've got hair dryer up here this is where you put your shower card and then this is to clean the shower room after you've gone that's pretty cool and then here is the actual shower as you can see it looks very good i like this i do need to go for a wee though i don't know if i can wee here it's gonna be a bumpy ride already okay right deal shower card insert do not insert wet cards i won't whoa hot water is available for about six minutes i love the challenge we're good this is actually unbelievable what the hell very hard to film anything about getting the in this room to be honest so let's turn this off for a sec actually kind of like it it's just a dressing gun nothing more to it i'm honestly considering taking this home with me what do we think yes or no this train is getting in a lot earlier tomorrow i think about 7:00 am so i don't have nearly as much time to sleep cool see you in the morning if you have made it back to tokyo well i had a great time on those sleeper trains the second night was slightly better than the first for various reasons but an experience that i am happy i have done
