AI GeneratedThe Memphis Grizzlies face a critical decision regarding their primary ball carrier. The team is weighing the experience and scoring potential of Ty Jerome against the defensive tenacity and system familiarity of Scottie Pippen Jr., creating a competitive battle for the starting point guard position heading into the new season.
The Grizzlies are forced into a massive decision.
Now, we've talked about this a little bit.
I wanted to make a video about this for some time now.
But now with the low debt period, I feel like I can finally make this video.
Tuomas Isolo has a good problem on his hands.
But who's going to be the primary ball carrier?
One guy in his mid-20s, another guy in his upper 20s,
and a long-term decision possibly to make for Tuomas Isolo.
Come on, everybody. Thanks for tuning in.
Jerry Altura for another episode of the Grizzlies Digest.
Again, debt period here in late July, so we're getting all that we can.
But obviously, thank you so much for tuning in, subscribing,
tuning in for the last month or so for draft analysis, free agent signings,
other analysis, and other news that's come through.
Thank you so much.
We're going to make this as fun as we can for the debt period that it is.
But we'll get right into it right now.
I want to start with this guy.
Ty Jerome came in from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He's been in the league for about seven years at this point,
about to be in his eighth NBA season.
Started to get on to come up with the Golden State Warriors
and then had a breakout season with the Cleveland Cavaliers back in the 24-25 season.
Now with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Only played in less than a handful of games last season because of injury.
That's kind of going to be the topic of discussion.
We're just going to keep going back to injuries.
It's not anybody's fault, but that's just what happens sometimes.
But Ty Jerome, I think, in my opinion, is in the running,
like in the front running to be the first three-point guard.
But again, there's plenty of a battle to take place here, in my opinion.
But this is from Virginia Cavaliers on SI.
Why Virginia great Ty Jerome could have his best NBA season this year,
could dominate now that he takes center stage for the Memphis Grizzlies.
So this is from Xander Teelock.
Hope I got that right. Sorry if I didn't, Xander.
But this is a part of his piece.
He says the Grizzlies are in dire need of scoring.
Their defense looks incredibly promising with Zach Edie, Cameron Boozer,
Jeremy Grant in their starting lineup.
But there is no clear number one score at the moment.
Now obviously that could be Cam Boozer as he has a case for rookie of the year.
He has just as much of a chance as Darren Peterson or Diabata or even Caleb Wilson.
He has just as much of a chance as anybody.
So he could develop into the number one score.
We don't know at this point.
But Jerome actually averaged the most points per game of any player on the roster last season.
Now that's a very small thing to take away because, again,
he didn't really play in that many games last season.
But he was on track, just like Zach Edie was,
was on track to have his best season as an NBA player.
I'm going to take you full graphic to this picture right here.
So starting with Phoenix and a couple of years with OKC,
then Golden State, and then Cleveland.
There's a breakout year where he was arguably one of the best bench players in the game a couple of seasons ago.
Only played in 15 games, but averaged 19.7 points
and averaged around 22, 23 minutes a game.
Shot 42%.
Now, again, this is a small little takeaway from everything that happened
because we feel like we have not seen a full-strength Memphis Grizzlies team in some time.
But Ty Jerome is someone who has been growing each year.
And the other guy we're going to talk about, Scottie Pippen Jr.,
he's another guy that's been growing each and every year.
But what exactly are the roles here?
Now, I think that there's a case for Scottie Pippen Jr. because he's been here longer.
He knows the system a little bit longer.
He's had a lot of new teammates.
I guess teammates, if you want to call them two-way players, sure, that aren't really here anymore.
But he's been here the longest compared to Ty Jerome.
So there's a case for him, but for Ty Jerome, he's a bit older
and he's had more NBA reps, has had the better reps as a bench player in the NBA.
So that's why, in my opinion, I think he's going to be in the front running.
But there's just as much of a case for Scottie Pippen Jr.
And because why?
Well, because whenever he takes the court, now he might be 6'6", whatever they say he is,
but he's as scrappy as a defender as it'll get in the NBA.
And you don't really say that about guys that are his size.
You think of him as kind of small for the NBA game, skinnier for the NBA game, but good fit.
He's well fit, but he's a very underrated defender.
And I can't really say that about Ty Jerome, but again, when you look at Scottie,
he has been there for John Moran.
He started for John Moran in the playoffs, and we know who he is.
Coaching staff knows who he is.
Fans know who he is.
And there's plenty to look forward to whenever he's on the court.
Now, he gave an interview with someone, with an organization overseas, I think.
I'm not sure of the organization, but he said,
I'm feeling good.
I got surgery at the end of last season.
Took this whole summer recovering, rehabbing, and feeling super healthy
and ready to go for the next season, so I'm excited.
And he actually played in less games than Ty Jerome did, believe it or not.
As we're going to pull up the stats here for fifth and junior.
I'll actually go full screen on this too.
Give me a break from being on cam.
But, yeah, you look at that 24-25 season, playing in 79 games,
starting in 21 of them.
That's when we really got to see him blossom, right?
And playing those backup minutes for John Moran.
Well, actually, yeah, I mean, he was the clear backup that you could depend on.
And he averaged nearly 10 points a game.
And you look at what he did in steals, averaging over one steal,
almost two steals a game every time he's played in Memphis.
But you look at that 10 games played, six games started in it.
Looks like he was on track to have a career year himself at one point.
But, once again, injuries have taken the toll on both Ty Jerome
and Scottie Pippen and Zach Eaddy.
And pretty much every guy that you can think of.
So, this is a small portion.
Again, I hate to use the numbers here as, like, any kind of base
or any kind of point here.
But you can see that there's some high potential with both guys.
But who is someone that you think could break out next season?
I think that both of these guys have the opportunity to do that.
But in terms of NBA reps and experience level
and being on the top stage of best bench players,
I'd say the edge, in my opinion, is Ty Jerome.
But Scottie Pippen Jr. has a heck of a case just because of his scrappy defense
because he shoots the ball well.
And I think that he has what it takes to be out on the court
for 20 or so minutes a game.
I mean, if you want to compare the minutes and the short time that they were out there.
So, this is, once again, this is Scottie Pippen's minutes.
Again, if you look at 21 to 25 minutes a game, this is Ty Jerome.
About the same, I think, 22 to 29.
I think Ty Jerome can easily average that, especially if he starts.
I mean, he's going to hit 30 minutes a game and give you real good production.
He's going to give you real good shooting.
I think both guys are the same in a little speck.
But I think that Ty Jerome has the better advantage when it comes to shooting.
But then Scottie Pippen Jr. I think has a scrappy defense.
But there are great things about both guys.
This is going to be, I think, a friendly competition once we get to training camp.
But for Tumas Isilovic, this is a great problem for him and a great problem for the Grizzlies
because your point guard is basically your quarterback in the NBA.
You've got to solve that.
You've got to solve who that's going to be.
And again, hey, if one gets hurt, you've got a perfect backup for one another.
But that's going to do it for this video.
Thanks so much for watching this video.
