AI GeneratedThe New York Rangers opened their season with a disappointing 3-0 shutout loss to the Boston Bruins. The game was characterized by critical turnovers, defensive lapses, and a failure to generate offense, raising immediate concerns about the team's direction and systemic execution.
Everyone is already speaking out about this. As the Rangers start the season off on the wrong
foot with a lot of things that were prevalent last season that a lot of Rangers fans did not like. And
not only that, Rangers fans are absolutely livid at one defense pairing in particular. One player,
most notably, in particular. And something that the team was doing in this game that looks awfully
familiar to last season. And we're going to break down exactly what all of that is,
what all of that means for this team moving forward. And much more, including quotes from
head coach Mike Sullivan. And some of the players, including rookie Albert Schmitz on his NHL debut.
And much more in this episode. All the fallout from the first game of the season. But before we
jump into all of that guys, a quick reminder to hit that subscribe button. I am giving a jersey
away here on the channel for whatever comes first. Either 15,000 subscribers or the Rangers make the
playoffs. And tough start to the season, but I still believe that they can try and make the
playoffs this year. I still believe that they definitely have a chance in that Metropolitan
Division. And there's been an influx of new viewers over the last little while. So, if you're
not subscribed to the channel, that means you're missing updates on the Rangers every single day.
But, of course, the Rangers fall 3-0 to the Boston Bruins. Now, in this game,
it was tight, right? Like, I mean, there was really no goal scoring around the league last
night except for that last game in the Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks. This game came
down to the wire of, you know, the last five minutes. But the Rangers made a lot of mistakes
that I want to talk about. And I want to talk about turnovers. That's going to be a huge
talking point in this game. But the biggest talking point coming away on Twitter, on social media,
this morning is Brayden Schneider. It is game one. And I almost feel bad for the guy because he is
not going to escape this all season. I mean, I don't really feel that bad, but he's not going
to escape this all season. The Rangers probably, at this point, should have traded this player this
offseason. Because they're going to be trading him at some point this season. And things like
this will continue to happen. Late in the third, J.J. Paterkin's first game with the Boston Bruins
puts Brayden Schneider in the spin cycle, puts it between his legs, goes in and puts it between
Igor Shostakhin's legs. Now, for Brayden Schneider, why did you think it was a good idea to go for a
hit there and leave Albert Schmitz out to dry a little bit? It's a tough play. I don't understand
why you're going to take the body in that position. Just gap up on the guy a little bit and
try and force him wide, especially that late in the third. So that was a puzzling decision.
This is a guy that they're going to look to trade at some point this season, ladies and gentlemen.
He makes $5.5 million on a one-year contract. And I just don't see him as part of the future
of this team. And I don't know if they do either. One thing that will become a talking point,
and I don't want to bring it up too early. And I'm touching on this today because of the mistake
yesterday. And that's just what we're going to do, right? That's just what we're going to do
this season. We're going to analyze everything. We're going to look into everything. One storyline
that's going to become pretty prevalent by November is if this team starts slow again,
which I definitely want to get into because again, in another season opener, they cannot score a goal,
which is just brutal. A talking point is going to be Chris Drury and his job,
because he put a lot on the line here, retooling. And I think this team will be better. And I don't
want to overreact too much after game one. But all I'm saying is because of the result last night,
if some of that continues, if it starts to bleed through like it did last year
into November, let's say his job will be a talking point. That is for sure. Now,
again, Braden Schneider, they are going to look to trade this player at some point this season.
And, you know, team off to a rocky start. It is just one game. I'm not going to overreact too much,
but all in all, I'm glad that Rangers hockey is back. I'm glad that hockey is back in general.
This was the lineup that the Rangers went with last night at TD Garden in Boston. Now there's a
few things I want to talk about in terms of the line. Okay. First line, not too noticeable. They're
going to figure it out. I feel like the chemistry is still there from last year. Second line was
actually really, really good. I want to get into some statistics on that second line. Third pairing
wanted a little bit more from them. Albert Schmitz was probably nervous NHL debut. It is what it is,
right? Second line was actually quite good last night. I want to bring up some, uh, you know,
analytics as well from Vince Marcogliano here, and I will in a second, but,
uh, I want to get to this from JT Miller who's playing on that second line. JT Miller called it
a fairly even game, which in theory it was, but pointed to odd man rushes as the New York Rangers
biggest issue. We want our D to be a big part of the play a lot. That's how a lot of offense
is generated in the league, you know, pinching, taking opportunities like that. And I do agree
with that to a degree. So it's just the timing of when the forward is going to come down and
replace. We'll get better. We'll get better at it. It's game one. It is so ironic that JT Miller
said this because I want to play you guys a video clip from one play yesterday where he literally
said in that quote, we have to pick our spots. We have to make sure that the forwards are covering
for the defense when they come up, which is, you know, that's the thing when the fence pinches,
you want the winger or the center, whoever's there to cover for them, right? So you don't
have these odd man rushes, which was a huge theme last night. Check out this clip. Puck goes in
around the boards, comes back to the point. The fenceman pinches in, which was a bad read anyway,
and Miller's not back covering on this odd man, on this breakaway, not even an odd man rush on
the breakaway. And look at it here. This is Pettersson putting the puck in. Miller is at the
line. I'm going to rewind this here. Miller's at the line with him. I guess maybe he thought
Yorkstrand here was going to make that read. I I'm not sure. Anyway, I want to bring up this from
Vince Mercogliano because speaking of the second line and speaking of JT Miller, it actually looked
pretty good. And if you're going to take any silver linings from this game, I thought the
Dorothea Miller-Yorkstrand line would look pretty good. These are some good numbers here, okay? So
high danger scoring chances were 8-1 when the Rangers were with them on the ice. Shot attempts
were 16-8 and shots on goal were 11-5 with almost 70% expected goals scored. That's really good.
Those are good numbers. And for a second line where I was looking at it like, I hope this works
out and I think Dorothea is going to have to do a lot of the heavy lifting there and Dorothea's shot
is really good. These are good numbers as a line. That is encouraging. That's encouraging. So they
were winning a lot of their shifts. Dorothea also had a team high five shots on goal. So he was in
and around it last night. He's going to break through. He's going to score a lot of goals for
the students here. It's one game. I'm not going to panic too much, but I understand and I'm feeling
it too. You didn't score again. After everything that happened last year to start the year, you
started the season by getting shut out. That is concerning. It's a little concerning. Now they
could score five goals next game. They might and they might act like rip up Detroit. They may
absolutely rip up Detroit, right? And that's going to be fun. We're going to love watching
that if that happens, right? They have to get going here. They can't let this snowball like
last year. Now there's so much pressure to score in the second game because of what happened last
year and because we saw so much of what we saw last season yesterday, right? There was some
deficiencies in the game where you go, I saw this last season, right? And it's the same coach, the
same structure, but like you added so many new players that you thought in theory, okay, we're
going to be able to score more. That's something that we really needed to work on. So confusing,
confusing. One guy I don't want to dump on yet. Yes. Not to make it like I'm definitely going to
at some point. I don't think I will, but a lot of people were talking about, you know, Albert
Schmidt's out there on social media too. And he said, I just got to make better decisions at some
points and taking care of the puck. And he's a, he's a rookie. I'm not going to freak out just
yet. I think he's going to continue to get better. He said, I made a couple of plays that weren't
there and I would like to take those back. And it's first game jitters, right? Again, I'm going
to keep saying, but I think that the best thing I can do right now is just think about it, learn
from it, move on and try not to make the same mistakes in the future. And I think that's exactly
what he's going to do. First game jitters. He will be just fine. There was a lot of plays that
he was trying to make that just weren't there, forcing pucks, stuff like that. He's going to be
okay. He's going to be okay. He's going to get used to it. And he's played against men before
he's played in the Olympics and he's thrived in those areas. And he's going to do the exact same
here. I'm not worried if it continues that way, I'll get a little bit worried, but he's a smart
hockey player. I don't think it will. Or maybe then at that point, you'll look at who he's
playing with, right? So take a look at that. And again, like, I think Brayden Schneider is going
to be traded at some point this season to free up that cap space. And just because they're not
going to sign them long-term, it's just not happening. So we'll see, you know, he gets a new
defense partner at some point, but one last thing I wanted to highlight, which was the problem last
night, another problem, because it was even you have the Agora net and all that type of stuff.
It was even until the end. Turnovers, turnovers, huge problem with this team. And Mike Sullivan
talked about it last night too. We turned the puck over in the wrong areas of the rink and it wasn't
just the wrong areas of the rink. It's just turning the puck over far too much, far too often, just
giving the puck back to them. They were just giving the puck back to the Bruins. And he said,
I thought we were trying to play a little bit too much East to West as well. So that was another
thing where at the end of last season, the reason I wanted to bring up this quote is because at the
end of last season, after Panarin was traded to the LA Kings, there was far more North-South
play, just speed, getting in, making plays, putting the pucks to better areas, deflections
in front, that type of stuff. And they were finding success with that. Last night, they moved a little
bit out of that. And again, first game, maybe they're just trying to find their spots, stuff
like that. They'll all get together, shorter training camp too. And there was quite a bit
of turnover with this team. So keep that in mind. It was a short training camp for everyone though.
So I'm not making an excuse, but give them like, you know, three games, four games at this point
to kind of get used to each other and see if there are real fundamental problems with this team.
But that is a problem. Take care of the puck. That is such a pet peeve of mine.
Do not give the puck back to the other team. Allow yourself to have a chance. Allow yourself
to be able to make plays, put it to good areas. And I feel like they weren't really doing that
too much last night. So they have another opportunity to do that in a couple of days.
And it's a longer season this year, 84 games this season. Guys, let me know in the comments,
how you feel about the first game. I wish there was more to talk about. I wish there
was more positives to talk about, but they couldn't give us a goal. They turned the puck
over a lot. Braden Schneider looked horrible on that one goal, but there's some positives
to pick. Dorofeev looks good. That line with Dorofeev looks good on it, besides
that pinch, which was horrible. Didn't result in a goal because you have Egor Shterkin in it,
but a lot of positives still to pick from here and there, especially with, you know,
some of the younger players. And I have a feeling that top line is going to get going as well.
So let me know how you feel in the comments below. Wish we had more to talk about,
but I'll be back tomorrow for some more updates and throughout the course of the entire season,
make sure you are subscribed to the channel. I'll see you guys tomorrow.
