Well, hello everyone and welcome back to Crowley House Flower Farm. This week
again it's going to be hot and we are just trying to get as much cutting done
early mornings, late afternoons, still working on that split shift.
So you're going to come cutting with us and we're going to make some
mixed bouquets here in a little bit. Well no, we're going to do that tomorrow. I
forgot. We're going to just keep cutting and
you just get to come with us. That's it. That's all we're doing is cutting.
So it's going to be really really hot this week
so we have to make sure we're getting up bright and early to get all the work
done but we're pretty much making sure that the greenhouse is all cut
through before it gets too hot to be in here.
So that's the next job. What are you cutting Riley?
I'm cutting asters. What color? Peach. Aren't they beautiful?
Watch the baby bees please. They're still sleeping.
There was twins. Twins. Well they're probably not sleeping.
No they are. They're sleeping all over them still.
Look at that huge bumblebee. That big guy.
So I'm out here harvesting some hops and we try and do this before it gets
too hot but what I'm harvesting is off of these
anchor poles basically. So this is kind of the job I have is
getting this cleared down. They are so beautiful this year. I think
it's partly because of all the rain that we've had
and I don't know. This time of year this is kind of a fun foliage so we
sell a lot of it. So here I am. So hops can be dried. They
can be used. We cut them in like long strips for like garland work
for designing. I like to hang some in the house.
Just you know around like the mantle. They smell really really good and then
they dry just beautiful. They do they do get fragile when they
dry so you kind of have to place them
let them dry in place and then when you pull them out you have a big mess to
clean up. But they are gorgeous. The other thing
about hops is I mean obviously you can make beer with it if you wanted to if
you grew these at home. So there's multi-purposes to them for
sure. We sell them also in a tip form and
you'll see me cutting that today. That is a shorter piece
that we we sell a lot of those. We sell them in 10 stem bunches
and that's easier to use in like say a bouquet or
an arrangement and that kind of thing. So I've just finished cutting my first
bunch that's going to go in directly into water because hops are really
sensitive that way. We have a little solution in the water
that's going to help them keep hydrated. We'll give them a fresh cut when we get
back. I say we it's just me and there's like
this bald eagle that's staring at me watching me cut.
Anyways so I guess it's we. Anyways I'm gonna get these back to the
studio and get them fresh cut into cold water
and they'll do really really well from there.
The one thing about hops is you definitely want to wear some good
gloves. These are goat skin gloves that we pick up just at the hardware
store. Any type of glove actually.
Long sleeves and you definitely want to do it in the morning.
If you get any of the it's just really itchy.
Oh my gosh. Calendula salve works really well to kind of calm it if you
accidentally get scratched but they are beautiful and worth
working with and cutting. So I'm just going to get this first bunch
directly into water and keep cutting.
So I've got I'm doing 20 bunches today plus some long ones long whips. The long
whips we're cutting in five stem bunches and they're
anywhere from three to six feet long. So they're a little bit trickier to get
into water and to transport. But I want to show you guys this is
really cool. So I'm out here it's kind of next to the waterway
which is the big river that runs through our area
and so we we're right next to the river and
there's just this beautiful breeze today and I like I said I have this like bald
eagle that's like watching me. Got a little nest over
there and I think he's got some babies or he
she he I think they do that in partners.
They have a nest up there with some babies so they're making a little bit of
noise. So that one came down like uh most
should. Oh it's hot and sweaty out here um
cutting hops is really hard work that's why they're so expensive
and they're itchy and there's all kinds of problems with them.
But I got it down to where I can go ahead and cut them
into the chunks that I need um into tips.
This one had a little bit of the growth from last year
dead branches in it so it was kind of kind of messed up just a little bit but
I think I can salvage at least a couple bunches
off of it. So yeah pretty good day cutting so far.
I am making a arrangement for a vineyard that we
do every week and this one is really fun because
we kind of get to design whatever we like and
their style is really cool. It's very Scandinavian
modern but kind of wild flowery. So this week though we wanted to try to do
kind of a monochromatic look because we have a lot of orange flowers right now.
So we chose a lot of different orangey coral kind of colors. Okay so this
green would play nicely on this mugwort and
it also has this like yellow color to the tips.
So that kind of plays nicely also and brings out the yellowy
orange coral kind of color. So I'm excited.
So the chef at the restaurant he actually orders a lot of
random things from us to actually cook with.
So this time he ordered these marigolds. He's going to use them. Last time I
believe it was the sunflowers at their bud phase
and I guess he was making sunflower they're like they taste like
artichoke hearts I guess. I want to ask him how
how it went when I go. And yeah this time he
ordered these from us. So that really inspired us to do this really orange
look. Tie it all in. The space that they have there
has vaulted ceilings and it's very big and spacious so
we want our arrangements to make a dent in the space. So we're always looking
for something that's really tall going to give it that height
and then it it doesn't look too small.
So I need to get those little bees.
I know I'm super trying to avoid them. Oh yeah there's one.
Because I do not want to get stung even though with bumblebees they don't sting
really. Are they kissing? No they're just butt to
butt. They're just cute. They're so cute.
Well as the seasons change the bounty on the farm becomes colorful and beautiful
and starts to fade into fall. We are loving this time of year
and even though it is a hard time of year for us to just keep
going we would like to just enjoy summer
and relax. The time will come for that and we know it's around the corner so
it's almost like a horse heading back home to its stall. It kind of
picks up its pace and that's where we're at right now on the farm.
So I hope you enjoyed this video and all that beautiful color and the hops. Oh my
gosh loving the hops right now. So yeah
much success in all you do and grow and we'll be seeing you
shortly in the gardens very soon here at Crowley House.
Bye-bye.
