What's up guys, Natan Sutton back with another video, and today we present to you the modest
woman. She's beautiful, she's got the neck covered, no cleavage. Oh gosh, we want to hear about you
too. The modest man. I don't have any arms showing. They say your shirts are too tight on your arms.
This one is a little tight. Sorry, sorry guys, girls.
So today we are talking about modesty, and this is a very tricky and tough subject in my mind
because, you know, I wish we, I really like to give you guys answers like this is right,
this is wrong, but with modesty there's a lot of gray areas and a lot of interpretation
and opinions. So this is something we've been asked about I think since we very first started
this channel. People have been like, make a modesty video, make a modesty video. So here it
is, and it's a big one. I feel like there's so much to say, and a lot of it's like opinions,
and everybody's different, and so it's gonna be a tough one. Be gentle with us.
Yeah, so instead of like giving you guys what, like this is the way, this is the only way,
this is how you're supposed to be modest as a Christian, we're gonna more have like a dialogue,
like a conversation back and forth between us with you guys, and just really share our feelings
on certain subjects and about modesty, and we're not claiming to have the answers. We're just gonna
kind of vent our thoughts. The disclaimer. We always have to put that in there. We don't know
it all, unfortunately. Yeah, we wish we knew it all, but we're just, you know, we're just here
trying to do our best, trying to please God on this earth. So first and foremost,
what's most important to always consider is what does God say about the matter? Well, the Bible,
it tells us to be modest. I don't think anyone really disagrees with that. It specifically
addresses women on being modest, but I believe God wants all of us to be modest. One thing to
consider is the Bible is not that specific on what we should and shouldn't wear, but more so
just like a general guideline of, you know, being modest, and I think that's probably because
back in their day and age, I think they probably wore like full body linen and wool and animal
skins. I looked that up. They did wear that, by the way, and so I don't think it was really that
much of a problem. I don't think girls were walking around with push-up bras and booty shorts
and thongs hanging out their pants. Okay, so how about we start from like the base level of what
is definitely wrong in this area? So I feel like that's a good place to start, you know,
running around naked and is not being modest. So let's start there and then kind of build our way
up. Yeah, I think there are some things that's kind of like the obvious wrong for Christians.
Some of them would be like, you know, wearing a thong bathing suit maybe or wearing shorts that
show your butt or wearing like how girls can wear bras as almost like a shirt or a top like without
a shirt on over it, but you know things like that I think are like the obvious, you know, that's
where you gotta draw the line. Yeah, so but then we move into areas such as like bathing suits,
bikinis, leggings. I want to make sure that we address the men here too, which we are going to
do. I think modesty is, everyone thinks of women, you know, the way women should dress,
but we're definitely going to get to the men here too, but let's just get there now, you know.
No better time than now. Yeah, and like guys, wearing bathing suits, being shirtless, like is
that okay? Or like speedos. I feel like speedos are kind of revealing. You used to wear that.
Yeah, I was a swimmer in high school and college actually and I wore speedos and that's another
thing that I want to talk on about this whole topic is context. So I think context is huge,
you know. If I were to show up, if I were to just walk around the public square in a speedo,
that would obviously be trying to draw attention to my body, but at a pool, not that that makes it
right, but it's kind of expected and everyone's not like, oh look at him in the speedo. That's
what you think. Yeah, that's what I think. So I do think context is important to keep in mind
when you're trying to dress modestly, but at the same time, I'm not saying, I don't necessarily
believe that that makes it right, you know. Just because you're at a pool and you're wearing a
bikini and it's expected that you're wearing a bikini, does that make it right? Yeah, someone
actually asked us about this. Speaking of swimming, it's like if you do a sport where the uniform is
revealing, like I think the girl that made the comment was a volleyball player and, you know,
they have to wear like those really short tight shorts and then guys swimming in speedos and then
like cheerleaders wearing short skirts and competition cheerleaders show their stomach,
you know, like what if you're on a team and everyone's wearing the same thing and you may
not be comfortable with it, like what do you do? And that's a hard one. Yeah, I mean that question
specifically is I would personally say if you are feeling convicted that what you're wearing
is wrong and it's drawing attention to the wrong areas, then I would say don't wear it for sure.
And I think we can all agree on that, that if you're feeling convicted by it, then definitely
if it's not from faith, it's sin. So if it's coming from a place of you're worrying like,
oh I don't think this is right, then I think that's a great indicator that it's wrong.
But I also at the same time don't think that we can rely on our convictions as a guide to
is what I'm wearing right or wrong because it's so distorted nowadays. Yeah, I mean like everyone,
you know, you see people wearing certain things and it's it may be a cute outfit and I feel like
that like that a lot, you know, I'll see someone like, wow that's really cute, but I don't think
I would wear that. And you make yourself think that certain things are okay just because everyone
else is doing it, which is not, you know, the right guidelines you should go by. It's like,
what does God want you to do? Yeah, which is a huge part of this whole conversation is the time
that we're living in. You know, if you were to go back a hundred years, a hundred years ago and
bring someone from the past in today's age, they'd probably be unbelievably shocked thinking like,
I cannot believe what these girls or what these guys are wearing. Because like your grandma,
wasn't she like, didn't want your sister to wear pants or something? Yeah, yeah. So my grandma,
she was born in 1915 and she passed away at a hundred years old, which is pretty cool. But
when she was here, my sister would like, if she was wearing jeans or something, my grandma. Like
skinny jeans. Yeah, or not just kind of like normal jeans, really. My grandma would always
like kind of point them out and being like, don't you like, are you okay? Put a skirt on. Yeah,
put a dress on. So that's another thing to keep in mind is like, it seems like year after year,
our world is becoming, our culture is becoming more and more just revealing. And so it may look
like, oh, everyone's doing this. This is normal. I mean, everyone's wearing shorts up to their
thighs and that's completely normal. But just because our culture is changing doesn't mean
that modesty or in God's eyes is changing. Also, we've mentioned this in another video about how,
like when we're watching TV shows, if anything revealing comes up, we'll look away. Like,
you know, if it's like a sex scene or even people in like revealing bathing suits will look away.
And I feel like doing that, protecting your mind from those things really helps you
to where now when we see that, it's like, whoa, instead of it just being so normal. Like, I feel
like a lot of times people see these things and like, oh, like everyone dressed like that,
who cares? But when you're intentionally not looking at things like that, and then you see it,
it really, I don't know, it's like, I guess it's like the Holy Spirit in you is like,
it gets in your conscience like, oh, they probably shouldn't be wearing that.
Yeah. And that kind of brings me to my next point I touched on a minute ago,
but is the idea of our conscience being seared and being so numb to what's right and wrong.
I wish we could just say if you feel like this is okay to wear and this isn't okay to wear,
then that's your answer. But that can even be a little tricky because we're so numb. You know,
there's people out there that say they feel okay about cheating on their husband and that they
feel okay about lying. And they rationalize these things in their mind. So just basing
it on your feelings can be a little bit of a slippery slope. But also going off the Bible,
you know, we've, we've been reading some verses about this before we made this video.
And even that is not like the clearest thing, which is what makes this video kind of hard.
I wish it could be like strictly biblically biblically based on like, this is exactly
what you need to wear and what you cannot wear. But it's just too hard.
I think one great question to ask yourself that can be a good guideline is asking yourself the
question, why am I wearing what I'm wearing? So you know, and I'm talking to guys and girls here.
So me personally, this has been an interesting subject because I, as of today, as of the past,
I have like I go to the gym wearing tank tops, you know, that show my arms and parts of my chest.
And I really I asked myself the question, why am I wearing this? And the answer is because
I like to see myself like get pumped up in the mirror when I'm working out.
Oh my god, you never told me that.
Why do you think I wear them?
For comfort. I just thought it was like the most comfortable, you know, you have on like a t-shirt.
It is true. That is, there is a comfort factor there. And I get really hot and sweaty when I
work out. That sounds, that didn't sound too modest. But
the point I'm trying to make here is, as we were looking into this whole video idea,
it was brought to my attention that girls, you know, girls can lust after guys with visually.
And I've always thought of it like, you know, it's the other way around that
guys are the ones always looking at girls and lusting after them. It goes both ways,
you know. So I, as a guy, need to be mindful that maybe when I go to the gym and I'm wearing
these tank tops, maybe it's causing girls to lust after me. I don't know. Do you think it is?
I don't go to the gym with you. What are you doing here? I'm just kidding.
Oh, this, I feel like when people say that, it's always, someone always says,
isn't that the girl's problem then? Like you should be able to wear what you want to wear
and what you're comfortable in. And if they're going to look at you like that, that's their
problem. It's like, what's the response to that? Yeah. So I think it's both, it goes both ways.
Like, yeah, it is the guy's responsibility to not be looking after girl, at girls in the wrong way.
And it's girl's responsibility is not to be lusting after guys. But if you are putting,
if you're literally putting bait in front of their face, they're going to be more likely
to stumble. They're going to be more likely to look at you lustfully. So it is both of our
responsibilities. It's team effort. Yeah. It's Sutton's responsibility to not be showing her
booty hanging out, going out in public. So it's not causing guys to look at her. And it's as
guy's responsibility to try to avoid looking at girls lustfully and vice versa. Oh, but where I
was getting at earlier is the why question. So I think a good question to ask yourself is why am I
wearing this? Why am I wearing a shirt that shows my cleavage? Yeah. Why are you wearing that? Are
you wearing it because it's comfortable or are you wearing it because you're trying to get guys
attention to be drawn there? You know? So I think that's a great question that can guide you to
the right answer. Is this modest or not? And I really believe that's what God's whole, what
His desire for our life is, is our heart to be in the right place. Not a set of guidelines like
you, thou shall not wear shorts. Thou shall not wear bikinis. I think it's beyond that. I think
it's that He doesn't want us to try to find our beauty outwardly, but to find our beauty inwardly.
Yeah, I have a verse about that actually, right here. Okay, it says, this is 1 Peter 3 to 4.
Do not let your adorning be external, the braiding of hair, the putting on of gold jewelry, or the
clothing you wear, but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable
beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which in God's sight is very precious. Now, in that verse, I don't
think it's saying dress like a slob or like don't care about what you look like. I think it's fine,
you know, girls, to want to look nice, to dress nice, and present yourself well, to do your makeup, do your
hair, if that makes you feel good. And if you don't want to do those things, you don't have to do those
things. But I think a lot of times people take modesty from the Bible as like, I need to cover
everything, or I just need to dress like a grandma, or like a slob, or something to be able to
please God in this way. But I personally don't feel like that it's saying that. Non-Christians will
come at Christians a lot with this objection like, well, doesn't the Bible tell you not to braid your
hair? Back then, a way that a woman would go about really trying to draw a lot of attention to
herself is she would put strands of gold and strands of silver, literally like braided
throughout her hair in the braids. And the whole purpose of it was to like get attention drawn on
them. So I think the context there is very important in which they were talking about not
braiding hair. I don't think they're talking about, I don't think braiding hair today is the same as
braiding hair back then when they would literally braid gold and silver. Yeah, gold and silver throughout
their hair. Another thing to consider is just like where you are in the world, you know, where do you
live? For us, we live in Georgia. It is very hot here in the summers, even in the winter sometimes it's hot.
So for us, I think to expect us to wear like long sleeves and pants all the time is not that
realistic, at least for me, and we don't wear that stuff. But there is a way to dress for hot
weather in a modest way, I believe. Like, you know, your shorts being fingertip length, not wearing
things that show your entire stomach. But and then even bathing suits, I do wear
bikinis and I have gotten questions about that a lot. But, and I think my view on this has
actually changed over the years. I used to wear different kinds of bathing suits. Now I gravitate
more towards the tops that are like a sports bra shape. So there is no cleavage or anything. I don't
even have cleavage. There's like nothing showing up here. And then for the bottoms, you know, I don't wear
like the cheeky bottoms. I don't wear thong bathing suits, obviously. I like the high-waisted ones or
the ones that are just like full coverage down there. And I even like one pieces. So I just think
even if, like if you want to wear a bikini, there is, to me, a right way to do that. You know, not
like push-up bathing suits, like things that are obviously drawing eyes to the wrong things. You
know, if you're going to be hot and you're going to be around water, I think it's okay for you to
wear a bathing suit. It's just like being mindful of what kind of bathing suit you're wearing and then
what we were talking about earlier, like what are your intentions in the bathing suit that you're
wearing. And yeah, I mean this is such a tough subject because I really wish I could
be like, yeah, you know, wearing bikinis is okay. But I just can't say that. I don't know. I don't know
if it's okay because, I mean, it is so revealing. And even in the context of wearing at a pool or
at a beach, I just don't know. It's also hard because all girls are made differently, you know.
We all have different bodies and I think people that are bigger chested, maybe you have to think
about that in the bathing suit that you wear. People that have a bigger butt, you know, you have to
think about that. So that's another topic that is very sensitive for a lot of people
that I'd like to talk about. Is that, like, you know, girls that are more rounded, girls that have more
just, you know, voluptuous assets. Yeah. Should they be more mindful of how they dress?
And I personally think they should because, you know, what's the result? If you are
blessed in those areas, then more than likely guys are going to be more tempted to lust after you.
Not that it's all 100% your responsibility to prevent them from lusting after you.
But, you know, what's the result? Like, if you take an alcoholic to a bar, you're not going to say,
oh, if you have a drink, you're just such a wussy, you know. Never heard you say that word.
You know, you wouldn't take an alcoholic to the bar. And I'm not saying, everyone gets so nitpicky
on YouTube, but I'm not saying that's one exact perfect analogy, but I'm just giving you something
to think about. You know, that if you put those curves out there, if you put those curves in a
lustful, young, teenage, raging hormone male's eyeballs, he's going to be more likely to lust
after you. That's just the reality of it. But the same goes for girls. You know, I'm not trying to
be one-sided here. I, as a guy, need to be mindful and you, all you guys watching, we need to be
mindful of women. How are we presenting ourselves? How are we dressing? And should more muscular men,
say guys with better bodies, should they be more mindful of how they dress? And I would say, yeah.
Which is so hard for them. You know, they work so hard to get that body. They want to show it off.
Yeah, like I work out, you know, I work out pretty much every day and I love working out. I just,
I have, I get so much enjoyment out of it. But I think as guys, we need to ask ourselves the
questions, why are we working out? Why are we trying to get better bodies? Why are you? Yeah,
I asked myself that question and I really do, I think it's for a couple reasons. One, it's to
hopefully please Sutton, you know. You're doing a good job. I want her to like the way I look
physically. But I also love being physically strong. I love being, I know one of them. What?
I think you love to like beat your little records. Yeah. Like every day comes home, I beat my record.
Yeah, I have like this one on this personal competition with myself. I just love becoming
better, better than I was yesterday. If anyone's in Georgia and wants a workout partner,
this guy is in the market. He wants somebody to work out with. Yes, come on. Then you don't have
to compete with yourself. You can have somebody. Yeah. So something else I wanted to talk about
was attracting the right kind of people with how you dress. And it's just the reality of it,
that the way we dress really does say a lot about who we are, the kind of person we are,
and I think the trap that a lot of girls especially fall into is that by dressing more
revealing and posting pictures of themselves that are more revealing, they get more attention. They
get more likes, they get more second looks, which is not always a good thing. And I think that can
be a dangerous thing because usually like, oh, people are looking at me more, people are looking
at me more. But that's not really a good thing. You're definitely going to get more second takes
when you're wearing stuff like that, but it's going to be from the wrong kind of people. As
a Christian guy, there's nothing more attractive than seeing like a beautiful woman, but she is
not revealing everything that she has. I'll leave that for the surprise later. Yeah. Yeah. I mean,
I'm telling you there's a little bit of mystery. Yeah. If you really want to stand out as a
beautiful woman, girl, woman, girl, you will attract the right kind of guys. If you dress
modestly, I can tell you that. And then the same thing goes for guys too. You know, guys,
if you are being more modest, I think you will attract the right kind of girl. So we have some
questions that people asked us. We picked out some of the most common and what we thought were the
best questions. So let's go over them. Not that we'll have the answers, but we can talk about it.
Give our opinion answers. Okay. Question one, should guys be shirtless around girls? Well,
we kind of touched on that already, but yeah, I got to admit, this is something that I've been
guilty of. I, I'm pretty comfortable shirtless. So a lot of times I'll be outside, even not at
a pool. I remember this past summer we were playing, um, tennis. No, we were playing. Oh
yeah. Tennis. I usually play shirtless, but man, it's just because it's so stinking hot here in
Georgia. It like literally gets over a hundred degrees and I like to get a tan, but why do I
like to get a tan? Um, yeah, this summer we were playing, uh, baseball, her sister's backyard.
There was a bunch of young couples over there and I, there was probably a group of like 20 people.
And I was literally the only one who took my shirt off. And looking back on that, I probably
wish I didn't do that because I, I just in the past, I've never really considered causing women
to stumble, you know, like by looking at me, especially young married women. I don't want
them looking at me like that, but that truly was not my intention. My intention, it was
so hot outside. I was like dying. Everyone's old shirt is just like soaked. Yeah, it was so hot,
but I'm gonna be more mindful of that. Question two, what should we do if our friends are dressing
immodestly? It's a good one and a hard one because I know that when a lot of times if you tell
someone that you think they're doing something wrong or whatever, they, their initial reaction
is to get defensive or get mad at you. So that is scary when it's your friend, but I would say as a
good friend and iron sharpens iron, you should tell them in a gentle way, in a way that you think
would like make the most sense to them and maybe not hurt their feelings and not cause them to get
defensive, but to just present it in a way that you think they'll understand the best and tell
them. Yeah, that would be hard because I could see it right now. You know, the majority of people
out there would get really defensive about that, especially if you're coming from a place of like,
I'm dressing modestly, but I don't think you are, but I think it'd just be so important to tell them
your intentions behind why you're bringing this up, you know, that as a sister or brother in
Christ that, hey, I know that you want to honor God with your life and this is a topic that
I've looked into recently and I think it's something to consider. Just send them this video
and we'll do it. We're telling them for you. Opinion on girls wearing yoga pants in public.
I do this, too. You do this, too? Yes, it's like all I wear, especially pregnant right now,
these pants is like all that fits me. It's all that I wear, but once again, it's like,
I really think it's a body type thing and, you know, if you, there are also kinds that like,
if you bend over and there's see-through, you obviously don't want to be wearing those,
but like, say you're blessed in the booty area, you may want to wear like a longer,
if you're going to wear leggings, you should wear like a longer shirt that covers your butt.
Whenever I wear leggings or workout pants, I always try to wear a shirt that covers my butt,
even though I wasn't one of those blessed in that area. Yeah, I think if you really just,
man, with all these, it's so hard, but it's like coming from a place of,
you know, not a set of rules or guidelines, but how can I best honor God today? How can I help
my brothers in Christ not lust after me? How can I present myself as in such a way that is honoring
to God? And I do think Sutton's right about the way you are formed, your body, you know,
if you are just, if you're the kind of body type that guys lust after, then I think you need to be
more mindful. So if we're with leggings, yoga pants, you know, guys love looking at those booty
in the yoga pants. That's just the way it is. And I can, I can, I want to make it so clear in this
video that I am not saying that it's a 100% on the girl's responsibility to prevent guys from
lusting after them. It's, it goes both ways. I just want to make that so clear, but it is partial.
It is part of your responsibility. What's your thoughts on revealing your midriff?
Okay. So thoughts on that. I would say it's hard because one girl actually messaged me and
she was sending me pictures of like Sadie Robertson. And I'm sure if you guys watch
our channel, you probably know who she is. She's a Christian girl. She like preaches on stage.
She's really awesome and sweet and genuine. And she wears like crop tops and they're very cute
on her. And I look at her outfits and I'm like, wow, that's so cute. And then I, it leads my
mind to think if she's wearing that, then it's okay for me to wear that, you know? And that's
kind of what we were saying earlier of how, you know, we see things in our culture to where it
just becomes a normal. And so I don't really know. I don't know if that, I don't know if it's okay
or not. Well, I will say this from a guy's perspective, I think there's certain parts
of the female body that create thoughts of lust where other parts, it's kind of just like, wow,
she's pretty sort of thing. So like the head area, the head and face area, I don't think creates
lustful thoughts in most men. I'm not speaking for all men and I'm not speaking for women. Women
may be totally different, but I know the boob area, the butt area, the leg area, those are the
areas that I think create more lustful thoughts than other parts. Like, so the stomach, I think
it's just like, well, she's in shape or she's fit. Yeah. And I think it's also, it's just so
many variables. Like the outfit matters, I would say. Like the ones that Sadie wears or that I've
seen pictures of, they're not like revealing. It's just like a cute outfit, but there are ways to
wear clothes showing your midriff that is very revealing and like sexual looking. So it's just,
it's too many variables to answer that question. Once again, the theme of this video. One question
was, what does it look like for a guy to be modest? And this is a tough question, but I think
a really relevant question. And you know, that's something I'd like to hear from our female
audience is what kind of outfits do guys wear that might create lustful thoughts for you?
Like when you get, when you girls see a guy shirtless, are you like, Oh, he, he's a beautiful
man. Or are you thinking like, Oh, you know, are you lusting after them? I would love to hear from
our female audience. Cause that's something that we don't really hear that much about or talk about.
But I think that's something that guys need to really consider. I think, I feel like guys
clothing already is pretty modest. Like, you know, the baggy pants. I mean, I guess a lot of
guys wear like skinny jeans nowadays, but yeah, to me, like shirts that are tight on your arms.
I don't think that matters. Yeah. Like for me, I have a pretty big butt. So I think that I should
one of us was blessed. I think I should be more mindful of my pants, you know? Right. I mean,
do girls lust after guys butts? Yeah. So that's why everyone's like, Oh, football uniforms or
whatever. Yeah. Cause the pants. So this is one way that I can relate. So I'm not just,
it's not a double standard. What are your favorite stores to shop at to buy modest clothing? I know
the girls are going to love this one. Girls. I've said this in another video of like where I shop
and where I get a lot of my clothes is TJ Maxx. They're not everywhere, but it is like my favorite
store ever. And they have just about anything you could want. Um, you can just go there for
anything in your house, your clothes, your dog, your baby. She goes there for everything.
Literally everything. All right, guys. So that was our video on modesty. I know it's not the
clearest video ever, and we really like to give you guys clear cut answers that you can follow,
but hopefully at least provided some insight and maybe started conversations. Like we would love
to hear what you guys have to say about modesty and y'all can read through the comments and just
see like what everyone else thinks too. Yes. Yes. Please. Yeah. Let's start that conversation.
Leave us your thoughts below. Let us know what you think on these topics. Cause I am genuinely
interested in learning more about this and really seeking after what God wants us to do in this area
of our life. Because I think that's what's most important. This is Nate and Sutton sowing seeds
of truth, love, and inspiration one unit time. And that was our video on modesty.
