The family of an 18-year-old killed
by a Noonan police officer today announced they will sue the city.
As Fox 5's Doug Evans reports now, that lawsuit will seek $75 million
billion dollars.
Several things from attorneys for the family
of Zadarius Dorsey at this news conference.
Again, Dorsey is the 18-year-old Noonan man,
an officer shot to death in what the GBI has termed
an armed confrontation in early October.
First, they've given notice of the family's
intention to seek a $75 million lawsuit against the city.
Here's one of the family's attorneys,
And he's Harry Daniels.
The shooting should have never happened.
This is not even close.
Anybody tell you it's close is wrong.
Really?
That may be their opinion.
But they're wrong.
The attorneys also called for the release
of the officer's body cam video.
The district attorney here has
so far played that video to the Dorsey family,
their attorneys, as well as Noonan community leaders,
but so far has not made it public.
So we are demanding the release of the video.
As Attorney Crump said, say no more.
Show the video.
It's a video.
If you don't take Attorney Day, Attorney Crump,
Attorney Ward, Attorney Griggs,
or the family, release the video.
Let the public make their own decision.
District Attorney Herb Cranford has said that he would make
the video public once the GBI has finished its autopsy report.
Finally, and for the first time, the attorneys have called
for the firing and arrest of this Noonan officer.
A young man shot and killed unjustifiably.
That's what they're going to see.
Yes.
It's going to be a very hard watch.
And die.
And die.
That's what they're going to see.
The shooting happened October 2nd.
Noonan, the GBI, says the officer approached a carload of men
who got out of the vehicle.
When Dorsey started running,
the officer chased him, according to the GBI.
They also said the officer saw Dorsey pull a gun from his waistband,
ordered him to drop it.
The family's attorneys claim Dorsey was shot six times.
The DA has said a gun with Dorsey's DNA was found
at the scene 42 feet from the body ahead
of where he fell. The DA has said that Dorsey
was out on bond for three different crimes. As
Fox 5 has reported, one of those crimes included
an indictment in Carrollton in which Dorsey was
allegedly with two other men
who demanded sex from teenage girls at gunpoint in a locked apartment.
The GBI's investigation is continuing.
The findings will be turned over to the
the district attorney's office.
In Coweta County, Doug Evans, Fox 5 News.
