Well now to a Fox 5 News alert.
We have just learned the victims who were killed in a crash
in Stafford County this morning are a mother and her young child.
Police say the driver responsible was speeding
and driving under the influence. Fox 5's Julie Donaldson
is live near the scene in Stafford with what we know. Julie.
Hey, Shamari and Angie.
Yeah, the press release was just sent out moments before we come on air
saying that the victims,
a mother and her young child under the age of five,
died because of this accident.
Meanwhile, the father who was driving is in the hospital with
serious injuries. Meanwhile,
the driver of the other vehicle that caused this accident
was speeding, police are saying,
and he was under the influence with a blood alcohol level of 0.17.
Now, the images we're about
to show you show just how violent that impact was.
Now, this is what is left of the Nissan Rogue
that was struck from behind.
The impact sent the SUV off the left side
of the interstate where it overturned.
One passenger was killed at the scene.
We now know again that is the mother
and her child, who was under the age of five,
rushed to the hospital where they later died from their injuries.
While the father, the driver of the Nissan,
suffered life-threatening injuries,
police identifying the driver of the other vehicle
as 22-year-old Malik J. Thomas of Fredericksburg, Virginia.
He told police at the scene he's an active duty Marine.
He was not injured, but three passengers riding
with him suffered minor injuries.
The crash has shut down all northbound lanes of I-95,
forcing drivers to turn around and exit the interstate
while crews work to clear the scene.
Thomas is now facing charges of driving while intoxicated
and two counts of aggravated manslaughter.
It could be aggravated involuntary manslaughter,
which would carry one to 20 years, the death of two people.
One being under five and one fighting for their lives.
The case of Thomas, it'll be up to 60 years in prison.
He could be looking at, you know,
they're going to be looking at those factors.
I submit that they may be talking to the passengers of the charger
who were also injured, but they may speak to them.
Not so much about accountability, but about what happened
and when did the night start and where had you been?
How was the driving behavior leading up to this?
Again, just a devastating crash that happened just
a little bit up the road here on I-95.
Virginia State Police said they are not commenting at this time,
but that press release just came out just a few minutes ago.
Thomas will be arraigned Monday, November 9th.
