AI Generated
The speaker discusses the rise of AI-generated scripts on YouTube and the use of Pangram, a highly accurate AI detection tool, to identify them. He expresses deep frustration and a loss of trust in creators who use AI without disclosure, arguing that the lack of human ideation diminishes the value of the content and ruins the viewing experience.
I have been playing around with this application called Pangram
and Pangram is a tool that
that detects whether a block of text was written by a human being
or or AI like up until now
AI content detectors were crap uh
that they gave false positives false negatives you really
couldn't trust them and Pangram has been around now
for the better part of a year and it is it
It has a false positive rate of like point
0.1%. Like it's really good.
And all of my tests have been bang on. And so now you just take
this application. You watch a video on YouTube,
you go to the transcript, you copy paste a chunk
of the transcript, you put it into Pangram
and you will learn whether or not the person who wrote
the script for the video that you're watching wrote it.
Or just had AI read it.
And there have been a couple of video channels
that I've been watching where it's just 100% AI.
And I'm just like, and I liked those channels.
And I go back and I can find the time
when they weren't using AI and now they are using AI.
And so this for me is like,
well, like obviously they're using AI.
It's so easy.
Can you imagine how easy it would be?
For me to write scripts about the topics that I'm interested in
and get the assistance of the AI.
Dear Claude, please write me a video about gravitational waves.
Let's talk about this.
Let's talk about that.
Let's talk about this.
Let's talk about that.
No, actually write me the outline and then I'll look over the outline
and then you write me the script.
No problem, Fraser.
You got it, buddy.
There are a lot of channels that are doing this now.
Channels that should know better because it's so easy.
Because it's just like, oh, I could work
Or I could just let the computer do the work for me
and just focus on the stuff that I like.
It's very disheartening
because I've had to like click don't recommend channel
on a bunch of channels that I used to like.
And now I don't trust anything anymore.
I'll watch a video and I'll be like,
I heard a lot of it's not this, it's that.
I heard a lot of the specificity
in the way that person was describing
that retro game console.
That sounds like AI to me.
And then I check and like, yep, 100% AI.
Great.
You're dead to me.
So what do we do?
Because I think what this is going to cause
is that you just won't want to watch YouTube.
You're going to watch YouTube and you're going to go,
oh, is what I'm watching real or is
what I'm watching the result of a bunch
of AIs strung together where nobody put in any
effort?
Or maybe they put in some video editing effort,
but they didn't put in any ideation effort.
And that is heartbreaking to me.
I am like suffering grief right now thinking about this.
And, and that like when I'm, when I'm watching YouTube,
which used to be my thing of relaxing, like I love watching YouTube.
Now I can watch YouTube
and I'm like on edge listening for the signs that this
is AI. And then I figure it out
and then I block the channel and then I move on.
And it just makes me not want to watch YouTube anymore.
And the solution is very easy. The solution is just disclose.
If you had AI write your script.
Just tell people I'm about to give you
a video talking about all these cool retro game devices,
but I, the script was written by AI and then people can go,
yeah, I don't want to watch this.
Right. And so I don't know, like, what do we do?
Like, do we put 100% human on our thumbnail?
Do we have a, a little screen that shows up
at the beginning of all of our videos? It says,
you know, 100% of this, of the words being expressed.
The video that we show,
the images that we are providing, the music that we are
incorporating, the editing that was done, was done by human beings.
And so, like, I think this is on
YouTube to disclose this and figure this out,
because otherwise, all trust will be lost in
the channel. Or, more horribly, nobody cares, right?
That's the thing. And, like, I would,
So I want to see something here.
Okay, I'm going to start a poll.
If a video is great and you know
the script is 100% written by AI,
do you keep watching?
Tell me how you feel.
Like you as a creator are taking responsibility
for the words that are coming out of your
mouth.
So it's not just like there's some kind of slop factory
and you've attached slop factories
to each other and they're just spewing out slop,
but it's actually you thought about
What about a good idea?
And you then had the AI write the script.
100%.
Every word in the script is you just being a meat puppet for the AI.
In the same way that, you know,
a TV news announcer didn't write their episode.
That they're just a meat puppet for some other writer.
Except that other writer is a robot.
The facts, like, assume that it's a good video.
Like, the facts are correct.
It's well-researched.
There's no hallucinations.
The person is presenting a perspective
or is providing useful, detailed information.
It's just that they didn't do the work to write the script.
They just are letting a robot write the script.
They're like, write me a script about dark matter,
and then I'll just read it out.
And a PhD cosmologist looks over the work and goes,
yep, this is all correct.
You know, the AI knows what it's talking about.
Now, like, I won't ever.
Write my scripts with AI, you know,
and I will absolutely help with to research things,
you know, but I will not, my words are my words,
the way I want to express things have to come
from me. But, but that might not be the line that I think people would,
where people make the call.
Yeah. That's interesting.
