We do have a really sad update to the breaking news we've
been following out of Rogers Park.
Four victims who were pulled from a townhome fire
that broke out there have died.
All right, so you're looking at a picture of the scene here.
This is from Sky Fox over Paulina Street, not far from Toohey Avenue.
We've got Saquon live at the scene.
Say, this is not the update that we were hoping to hear right now.
What do we know so far?
Yeah, it's been incredibly emotional out here as people
Neighbors, loved ones are starting to react
to this news just like we are here in real time.
I'm going to do my best and step out of the way
so you can see kind of what things look like here.
This is the unit that we're talking about.
You can see the charred mess that's pretty much left
behind here. Investigators are here now
and we've seen them going in and out of this building with
flashlights. This is very typical in these investigations,
obviously, to take a look
inside and determine really what played out here.
And, you know, this is going to take
Quite some time here, we imagine,
because this is a fire that was contained at around
4.30 this morning, and still there
is a pretty big presence here of investigators and police
here on scene.
I want to show you this video that we got from a neighbor
who lives here just across
the street from this townhome unit,
and it shows you just how bad this fire was.
I mean, it was fully engulfed at this point.
We have learned that it was contained to just one unit,
it sounds like, but we know that
But nearby...
Neighbors who live right next door to these four people
who lived in this one townhome,
they were very close.
They talked about the fact that they
celebrated Halloween together recently,
and a lot of these neighbors are now reacting to this.
The messages that I've heard from a lot of these folks here, guys,
is all of them, and they're very much in shock at this point.
We did catch up with that neighbor who shot that video of that flame.
Thank you.
Here's how he reacted to what happened in his neighborhood.
So we didn't know whether the screaming was coming from inside
or outside, but we could smell the smoke.
I woke up off my couch to people screaming for help.
I heard ow and help.
I couldn't exactly determine what it was at first.
And just, it was...
That's the initial thing that woke me up,
people screaming, glass breaking.
So, you know, if you're just tuning in right now,
we know four people are confirmed to be dead at this time.
They were pronounced dead at nearby hospitals after
being transported there in critical condition.
Three people were also displaced
from surrounding units here at this townhome as well.
And we are also hearing reports
from the Chicago Fire Department that one pet.
We do expect to hear from some of these officials out here
this morning, especially considering the number of people
who died as a result of this fire.
We are also expecting to hear from the alderwoman
who is here on site right now.
We've seen her kind of going around chatting
with loved ones this morning, giving hugs.
But it's been very emotional.
So we will, of course, bring you that as soon as we can.
If they decide to speak at all and you can stay with us,
we'll be checking back in in the next 30 minutes.
OK.
