He is going to be previewing some of the city's best restaurants.
He's in fact right now at Camino previewing a taste of Dallas.
My man, this looks incredible. What's going on here?
I'll tell you what, all blocks, I guess down Greenfield,
you've got a bunch of restaurants all throughout West Dallas.
31 total are going to be participating.
Currently, they are doing that.
Taste of Dallas is on right now through the 7th.
Amy, great to see you again.
This is an event that was not around last year.
So I have to say, how did this unfold,
and how did you get 31 restaurants in West Dallas to be a part of it?
Oh, we have so many restaurants. That was not hard.
So a lot of people come to West Dallas, they say,
They always talk about the food.
Yeah.
We have so many diverse, amazing restaurants
in West Dallas, we're like, why don't we have
a dining week?
So we have a dining week now.
Taste of Dallas started November 1st,
Sunday, and it runs through Saturday.
We have breakfast specials, coffee specials,
lunch specials, dinners, sit downs.
Happy hour specials all week long at 31 participating locations.
It's awesome, too.
And this is a place that I've been to many times.
You know, we're outside of Camino.
But also there's a new restaurant, El Impostor, Impostor.
There is there's Ruta's, which is now in West Dallas.
There's there's Aggies Bakery. There's Freezie's.
There's all the restaurants on Greenfield.
But it's not just this area.
What other areas of West Dallas?
It's all over West Dallas, literally all over.
You know, the Beecher Street area has a lot of participants in here.
We have Crawdaddies, which is on Greenfield,
but farther down, there's so many different
styles of restaurants that are participating
and different deals too for some. So like at
Camino, there's going to be a BOGO type deal.
What are some of the other ones that are coming up?
Like later on, we're going to see freezies.
I would imagine they have the sweet treats. There's
probably some baked goods over there at Aggies.
So different from place to place. Some of them
are 20% off of your total bill.
Some of them are buy one, get one. Some of them are get a free
appetizer or drink with your meal.
Some of them are just specials that they never have. Say like
Like in Beecher Street, they have sandwiches that are special.
Okay, with that in mind, too, we want to hit up one of those places.
Amy, thank you for all the hard work, too.
Over here, we got Casey from Camino,
and he's setting up, ooh, you know what?
I'll dive into some pierogies, you know, and get a deal.
Great to see you, man.
Congratulations with the new restaurant down the street.
Talk about why it's essential that you guys participate
in Taste of Dallas in this inaugural year.
Well, I just think it's a great opportunity,
not only for us, but just the community,
the West Dallas community, to show off some of their great restaurants.
There's always been a lot of great restaurants in West Dallas.
Even more are coming, so it's, again, just a great opportunity.
And you guys do pierogies very well.
You have three in the order, and this is usually a $10 order.
What are the ones we're going to get,
and is it a buy one, get one deal then?
It is.
It's actually a BOGO deal, so buy one, get one.
Right now we have the potato cheddar,
we have the bacon kraut potato, and right now we have
a mushroom mozzarella for our pierogi of the month.
And you guys have a pierogi of the month
that changes quite frequently now.
It is a new month.
Does that mean that there are new pierogis too?
We actually, we're doing a menu change tomorrow,
so we'll have three new pierogis starting tomorrow.
So some exciting flavors,
but you'll have to come in and find out what those are.
I like that it's the exciting flavor and the change too,
but for you guys, you probably see a lot of new faces
that come in during these types of events here.
So for Taste of Dallas, it's happening, it's just the pierogis,
and I'm not saying just because they're really tasty pierogis,
But it's only...
One.
order per day, per person,
so I can't come in here and get four orders and walk out with
eight, correct?
That's correct, yeah.
Yep, yep.
We had to limit it a little bit, but hopefully,
you know, people still come in and enjoy some.
And they can come in tomorrow and enjoy some as well.
You guys have great burgers, we know that.
Great food here.
You also have the new restaurant, which we're going to get to as well.
So this is just one of the restaurants
for these guys, Camino and then El Impostor.
But 31 total here for Taste of Dallas.
It goes on through the seventh here,
31 different area restaurants, bakeries.
And much more, celebrating all
the culinary scene here in the city of West Dallas.
Casey, great seeing you. Thanks, Amy.
Thank you.
All right. That looks delicious, right?
We were just talking about how there's...
Good morning, everybody. Welcome back
with more than 30 participating restaurants and
businesses. Taste of Dallas is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Brian Cramp is at a personal
favorite of mine, Freezy's Candy Shop,
checking out the treats and deals that make this West
Dallas favorite worth a visit.
Okay, Brian, I need you to explain to Donovan or show him
what fairy food is. Yes, I'm listening. Yeah.
Oh, fairy food. Let's get to it right
away. Wendy, where's the fairy food?
Right on the top row.
Right on the top row, because that's where it should
be at any reputable candy shop there.
One of the best fairy foods produced around is right here at Freezy's.
And I'll tell you, West Dallas, you guys have been here for some time.
It's coming up in 100 years.
Yep, we're going over.
We've got a year and a half, and we'll
be in our 100th year of business.
A year and a half.
Oh, my gosh.
That means I'll have to see you again soon.
Yes, you will.
Yes, you will.
You guys obviously are part of this 31 restaurants
or more that have participated in Taste of
Dallas.
And you're bringing it, too,
because getting a deal on your chocolate, that's a sweet deal,
right?
Yeah.
We don't often offer anything,
and especially our pecan turtles, but we wanted to really
Put West Dallas in the forefront, and we thought,
you know what, what better way to put our turtles on?
Yeah.
So we're going to do 20% off our pecan turtles for this week.
You say that almost with some hesitation,
knowing that the price of nuts and chocolate is where it is.
Yeah.
But Taste of Dallas, you have to bring it.
Why didn't you choose these two?
Because you have so many to choose from, you're like,
I guess you had to hone it in on one deal?
Yes, I feel like our pecan turtles are...
You know, fairy food and turtles and toffee are number ones,
like there's, those are tough to pick,
but the turtles I feel like are just a little...
They just have a little edge on everything.
Yeah, well, you guys do great work, and you know that, too.
It must mean the world to you that you're coming up on that anniversary,
that you've been getting the support not just here in West Dallas,
but also down at the market as well.
And I just want to say that the deal
for this 20% off is only at this location as well.
You guys open at 10 o'clock, right?
We open at 10 a.m., yes.
And it's going to be you, it's going
to be Mike, it's going to be the family
that's going to be helping people out?
Yes, everybody will be on.
Everybody will be here.
Everybody is on call when it comes to a deal like this, too.
And we're looking forward to Christmas, too.
What would you recommend as we get closer to the holiday season?
Would you do pre-orders?
Would you want to just walk in?
I 100%.
I always recommend if you know what you want.
If you can order it, that is so helpful to us
because we can only make so much in a day.
I think people forget that we're hand-making the caramel
and the fairy food and the toffee.
So for us to get, you know, some people demand a lot and need a lot
for, you know, their families or their friends or their business.
So we like to make sure we can provide.
So a little bit of notice is always helpful for me.
We'll keep that in mind for sure as well.
Taste of Dallas, it's on, Wendy.
Always great seeing you.
The 20% off deal is happening.
through Saturday. They open up at 10 o'clock today, guys.
We have more Fox 6 Wake Up coming
back after the break today.
Always great seeing you and smelling this shop. It smells amazing.
All right. Well, Taste of Dallas is happening all week
with plenty of reasons to support local
businesses. Brian Cramp is joining us live
from Aggie's Bakery now and Cake Shop, by the way,
with some baked goods and some special offers
that they are kind of giving to customers. Man,
you have my attention. What's happening?
Yeah, you know, 31 different restaurants
and then stores are celebrating this taste of
Dallas. This is the inaugural year here
and I'm glad that you have like 30 different businesses
or so because this one is one
of those businesses I think people will stop to anyways. But you've
got a jumbo deal, Rachel. Great seeing you as always.
We do. Good seeing you. You know,
your cupcakes, people gravitate towards them
because you always have a cupcake of the week.
And this week, the cupcake of the week
is this one right here, which is the...
Is the caramel apple cupcake. The yellow cupcake.
It's stuffed generously with apples, it's got a caramel buttercream.
Drizzled in caramel and covered in peanuts.
You know, the only word you missed out of that was gooey.
Oh, it is gooey.
It's so gooey.
I can't believe I missed it.
Oh, my goodness.
You probably had a wonderful year up until now.
Obviously, people come to you.
Why did you want to participate in this when you're giving away
to buy one, get one half off, jumbo cupcakes only?
Because you didn't have to do this, right?
We absolutely didn't have to.
We wanted to do it. Yeah
West Ellis has always been so great about supporting
The businesses, my business in particular,
but obviously the other 31 businesses that
are participating. It's always really fun.
A lot of people that might not necessarily get here
always find a way. And for my business
and all of the other businesses in the community, it's
Fantastic.
You put a smile on people's faces for so many different reasons.
It's a sweet treat to get them through the day.
It's a celebration with family to mark an occasion as well.
I mean, but there's different flavors.
You also make it very hard for us to choose.
That's the trick.
So just laundry list through some of these,
because I know my son would probably love that one.
I'd probably like the one right next to it.
I'm so happy to do it. Yeah
This is our fun birthday.
It's a confetti cupcake with buttercream icing.
We've got a chocolate peanut butter.
Yum.
Red velvet, marble French cream.
Okay. Let's flip that thing around. Absolutely.
Yeah. And then is that a carrot and cream cheese?
Carrot and cream cheese. We've got a Dolly Madison,
which is chocolate cake filled with
buttercream, iced with buttercream,
covered in chocolate ganache. Do you serve a pillow with
that? Absolutely. You're going to need a nap for sure.
Our salted caramel and my personal favorite,
the chocolate bliss. Oh my gosh.
It must mean the world to you to also know that you're
continuing this business that started 49.
You're celebrating 50 next year. Coming up on 50 years.
And you know that we'll probably be back for that at some point.
You're open till what time today?
We're open till 6 o'clock tonight.
Okay, and remember, the deal goes on through November 7th.
It is buy one, get one half off.
Jumbo cupcakes only here at Freezy.
Excuse me, we were just at Freezy's.
At Aggie's Bakery in Donovan.
I mean, if you had to pick one, it would be trouble.
So you might as well take the whole tray at this point.
Dude, you know what?
I'm eyeing the carrot cake,
and I think I saw a red velvet cupcake as well.
Oh, the cake.
Right, right.
Well, if you really care about me, you'll bring me the carrot cake one.
That's a good one.
Just saying, Cramp.
Just saying.
No, thank you, brother.
I appreciate it.
Player in the West Allis food scene, it
It's bringing some big flavors to a taste of Stalus.
Brian Kramper is at El Impostor checking out a special deal
that's giving foodies a run for their money.
Good morning, Brian.
I'll tell you what.
Donovan, tacos from all around the world.
We've been here before, spent the entire morning with the team.
And I'll tell you what, Casey, it's good to be back
because those are some tasty tacos.
This is the second restaurant that we've been at for you today.
West Dallas obviously means the world.
When you initially moved Camino
and opened up that second restaurant here in West Dallas,
what were your thoughts about the area?
Because I don't think it was nearly where it
is today back six years ago.
Yeah, I mean, West Allis has always had a lot of great restaurants.
We thought it would be a good opportunity
to bring our concept to West Allis, especially
on Greenfield Avenue.
Yeah.
And it's been six years now in a blink of an eye,
honestly, and yeah, things are going
great.
Well, that's six years.
This is three weeks.
Yeah.
So not only do you have a second restaurant,
you do something a little bit different from
the menu you offer at Camino.
This is tacos, tacos from all around the world,
really global tastes coming together here
at El Impostor.
Yeah, absolutely. So we have some traditional tacos.
We also have some outside the box,
I guess you would say, tacos.
But our thought is if it's great food, it's even better in a tortilla.
Yeah, okay. I like that you use the tortilla
as your vessel to get food across to the table.
Let's go through these three tacos
because you do have a deal we'll get to in a little bit.
I've seen, I think, the first one before.
You showed us that one before. Isn't it the
El Pastor? Yeah, that's our traditional El Pastor taco.
Very traditional, delicious.
That's actually our second bestseller right now.
I suppose after three weeks you have an idea, don't you?
Yeah, some are moving better than others,
but everything's selling very well.
Okay.
We have a vegetarian option right here
amongst others, but this is my favorite.
That's the grilled cactus taco or the cact taco as we call it.
I love the cact taco.
So that's a black bean puree at the bottom from what I remember?
Yep, and then some.
I'm
Queso fresco and then, like I said, grilled cactus.
Yum.
Now what's the deal for the rest of the week through the 7th?
So you can come in every day and you can get a buy one,
get one, one per customer per day.
Okay.
And anything on the menu as far as tacos go.
Okay.
As far as tacos go, buy one, get one, one taco per day.
You got the blended, you got the...
Yep.
We have on the rocks.
Yep.
That's called the La Problema.
It's a dark rum mango frozen drink.
It's been wildly popular.
Yeah, there is also the enter to win option here where you can scan
for your chance to win up to $100 worth
of gift cards from some of the best spots in Dallas.
They're doing that there.
I know if you visit Dallas.com, there's more information.
I know I didn't see this taco previously.
What's on top of that?
What type of taco is it?
That's a Parmesan crisp.
That's actually a Caesar, chicken Caesar taco.
So kind of like all your classic ingredients on a Caesar.
On a Caesar salad?
Yeah.
On a tortilla?
You nailed that Parmesan crisp.
Because our producer for Real Milwaukee, we ate the ones that she made.
And it's not the easiest thing to actually make, is it?
No, no.
But, you know, Jose does a great job in the kitchen.
He's got it on lockdown down there.
So, yeah, everything's been very popular and well-received.
You guys have been well-received as well.
The first three weeks have been busy as well.
I mean, you know, during the Brewers run,
you didn't really have any TVs in here for Brewer games.
I imagine a couple, but a couple, yeah,
not known as a brewer's bar, but you guys are
definitely open for lunch today as well.
What time is it to kick off?
Yeah, so we're open every day, Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m.
And we serve until 10 every night, 11 on the weekends.
El Impostor.
And it's quite the story.
If you have the opportunity to swing on by here,
West Dallas, and can visit one of the
31 restaurants for Taste of Dallas,
I highly recommend diving into a taco and then also
bouncing around, grab a drink here, go down the street.
There's a lot of great deals.
A lot of great options when it comes to the food,
beverages, sweets, treats, and more here in West Dallas.
Casey, great seeing you.
We're going to toss it back to the studio here, guys.
I think I would have to go for Al Pastor.
Donovan, what do you think?
Al Pastor, the cactus taco, the Caesar taco.
What's your choice, man?
Dude, all the above, but throw in a camarones taco in there for me.
My man, chef's kiss.
This looks great.
Usually when I eat in West Dallas, it's at the state fair,
but I'm going to have to change that.
Come on, field trip, field trip.
We'll be right back.
It's taking West Dallas this week, and it's the perfect time
to sample one of the area's newest restaurants.
Our Brian Cramp is at Ruta's Fresh Indian Fare,
seeing what's cooking for this citywide food celebration.
I love Indian food.
And taking a quick glance at their menu there,
it looks like they have a wonderful assortment.
Yeah, and Aruna is a wonderful chef as well, you know,
as a person that has several cookbooks out there.
This is not the first time. Three. Yeah, Brian, three of them.
We've seen you three different occasions
in three different spots over the time that you've been around.
We've been doing, started with markets kind of in this area at least.
Then you had this spot down in Walker's Point.
That closed, but you found this location in West Dallas
and recently opened two months ago. What was it about West Dallas
that you wanted to bring the business here?
Well, West Dallas has been getting
a really good reputation of attracting some
Fine culinary talent, and I'm not tooting my own horn,
but it's just such a friendly
community, and actually the government here,
the city government, is extremely supportive
of small business, and it just,
this is what I've always wanted, this feeling of, you know,
being part of the community,
and actually being, you know, not just lost.
It's hard to do for any businesses, but especially restaurateurs,
you know, during this time, you know,
we have some options for you guys that are on the menu.
And Nicola referenced some of the things behind us.
But you have a deal through the seventh that is enticing people
to come in for the first time to the new locations.
So both of them are soups, right? What is the deal, first of all?
So the deal is with purchase, you get a cup of soup free.
So that's our chunky lentil. Very popular.
I used to try and just keep it seasonal before,
but people won't let me take it off the menu. Good for them.
I think we need, it may be for you something you've done
for a long time, but we need,
we want, and we come in for specific reasons.
Right.
This is true.
This is true.
And that is the tomato coconut.
They have special.
Yeah.
They have special.
You guys do a special cuisine here as well.
When you start putting the menu together for this location,
was it different from the Walker's
Point when you moved out of that one?
Well, I've added on some,
I think I spent a lot of time in Walker's Point just honing
Sure, sure.
Every, you know, just gathering people's response to stuff.
So all the absolute favorites are here.
They didn't leave.
I did add on,
The spicy curry chicken, which has now become extremely popular.
It's very popular.
So some people would come in and be like, oh, is the food spicy?
And I'm like, not really.
And I realized that there had to be one.
So there's a killer spicy curry chicken.
I've added a few more vegetarian, vegan non-meals.
So we do regional food from different parts of India.
Very rare to see pork on the menu, for example.
For example,
As you know, the whole premise of my food and
my restaurants is fresh, vibrant, healthful.
Indian food. Yeah, and you guys do such a great job.
Fox Local for more information, guys.
It is Taste of Dallas. Since you're new,
that means I need to come back.
We'll just do a full morning of it at some point,
but there you go with the purchase.
You got a choice of the soups here. Ruta's Fresh Indian
Fare, now located in West Allis, 77th and Greenfield.
This is Taste of Allis, guys.
It goes through November 7th here with 31 area
restaurants in the city of West Allis.
Man, I need to taste some Allis.
That is what I need to do.
I know.
Well, I'm so happy for them because, my gosh,
that city is really doing great things.
And they're all local.
From sweet treats and fresh baked goodies to tacos and Indian cuisine,
Taste of Allis is showing off the flavors
that make West Allis a destination for foodies.
Brian Cramp stopped by five local businesses this morning
and joins us live to share some of his favorite finds.
What a fun assignment for you today.
Oh yeah, it's great. Anytime that you get to meet
the people behind some of the great cuisine
that's served in any city, it's fun.
And of course, West Allis stands out lately. A lot of
restaurants are flocking to this area
because they know that it is truly a destination for foodies.
Oh yeah, absolutely. I was going to say, I mean,
it's such a variety of food and experiences that
are available during Taste of Allis.
What kind of surprised you the most?
I think the fact that there was a variety, right?
You know, we stopped at Ruta's last Indian Fare,
just recently moved to West Allis from
Walker's Point.
They've been there for only two months.
But when it comes to a new restaurant,
you know, getting its footing, this place has
a big following.
So I know they're going to be great.
But also another new restaurant, El Pastor,
which is serving tacos from all over the world
with flavors that are as far away as Japan or Argentina.
It's not your typical, like, Mexican restaurant by any means.
This is based on foods from all over the world.
And then, of course, there's the sweets
and the treats from some classic, like,
Aggie's bakery as well as Freezy's.
I mean, we're really not being dramatic
when we say there is a ton of variety.
Just looking at these clips, we're going all over
the place with different types of food,
and it all looks so good.
I know you went to the candy shop,
a bakery, of course, several restaurants.
So which stop maybe surprised you the most
and what just made it so memorable?
Well, you know,
Aggies is always a fun place to go
because when you walk in there,
you see what they work so hard on all the time.
And there's just a...
A case or three or four cases filled with these decadent desserts,
you know, and the fact that they have jumbo cupcakes
as a buy one, get one half off.
I think that is a great idea.
But then right next door, pretty much, is Freezy's Candy Shop.
They're coming up on 100 years in about a year and a half or so.
And for them to knock off 20% on a pecan turtle
is not something that happens often.
So I know they're jumping on board,
but also this is a community-wide event.
So, you know, it's just going to get.
You're going to get the sweets and the treats.
You're going to get some others like Flower Girl and Flame.
You got ODB's Classic Dive as a part of this one,
Crawdaddy's Double B's Barbecue,
Thank you.
Seven Seas Cafe, Slingshot Bar.
So you can go out there and grab some food, get a drink,
and also play a little slingshot.
Mainly more than anything, really, it's getting out there
and showing that West Allis truly is that destination for quality food.
Absolutely. I mean, what a long list right there.
Okay. So maybe it's your first time
going to Taste of Allis. You've never been before.
What do we really need to know here,
Cramp? For starters, take advantage
of some of these deals you're mentioning.
All right. Yeah, bounce around. So we were on Greenfield today.
I highly recommend maybe going in one
or two different locations over the course of a stay.
You can go get a taco at a buy one, get one at El Impostor.
You can go get some pierogi down in the street at Camino
or a sweet treat on the way out, you know, or.
If you have the time, bounce around
for the next couple of days of the week.
This is going on through Saturday.
And also check out the West Allis City website
because they have some options for you there,
all of the restaurants,
and a way to win a $100 gift card to some of those restaurants
that are participating.
And maybe go hungry.
Is that the number one piece of advice?
Very hungry.
Make sure you have plenty of room to try all of the tasty goodness.
All right, Brian, thanks so much for joining us.
What a fun morning that you had.
