US elects its first Black woman governor

A huge night for Democrats here in Georgia. Not only did John Ossoff maintain his Senate seat, but Keisha Lance Bottoms made history as the first black female governor in the United States. I remember speaking to her last weekend, asking her if she ever had a time to really think about this potential momentous occasion. She says not really, but it wasn't lost on her that she was the descendant of slaves. So knowing what her family's history was like, And to now certainly is a huge deal, not just here in Georgia, but across the country. Her Republican challenger, Rick Jackson, also releasing a statement saying he thanks everyone who stood by his campaign. He spent nearly $200 million of his own money to try to defeat Keisha Lance Bottoms, but that was not enough. It was being described here tonight as a blue tsunami because it's not just those two critical races but the lieutenant governor's race, the attorney general's race, the agricultural commissioner's race. These positions that are normally Republican strongholds did flip blue as well. And so when you have all of these wins, it is a new direction. According to the chair of the Democratic Party here in Georgia as a way to step away from President Donald Trump's policies and the Republican Party, but a way to unify people and to find solutions that affect everyone.
