And we begin with Morgan McKay live at Hochul headquarters,
the AP calling the race for Hochul within seconds of polls closing.
What was that moment like, Morgan?
Hey, Steve and Natasha,
I'm not sure if anyone was quite expecting it to be called that early.
At least here, people were definitely caught by surprise.
In fact, we called it on our air before
people even knew about it over here.
People were still trickling in at that point. Doors had opened
just about 45 minutes before polls closed.
And so people here were definitely caught off guard. And
then, you know, it became more of a party.
But Governor Hochul had been leading in the polls
And Hochul, though, still breathing a sigh of relief
because this is not a repeat of what it was four years ago in 2022
when Hochul only won by six points against her opponent, Lee Zeldin.
But Mayor Mamdani speaking just a short time ago and talking about
their historic partnership, we spoke with Senator Gillibrand after
and spoke about just what this is like for them
and having this partnership and what she thinks about it.
Here's that soundbite.
Your mom, Donnie, was just speaking about
his partnership with Governor Hochul.
What do you think of their partnership?
I know you didn't endorse him during the primary and after.
What do you think of the job he's doing?
I think it's a great partnership.
It's a very important thing that the federal government,
the state government and the local
government all work together to help people.
And I think the governor
and the mayor have worked seamlessly on child care, on grocery
prices, on education,
and I think they will continue to work together to help New Yorkers.
After that, we asked Gillibrand
if she thinks that Hochul should raise taxes
on the wealthy to help pay for child care.
And she said that's a decision left up for Hochul,
but that's something that Hochul
has really avoided answering directly on,
on whether or not she's going to be raising taxes next year,
especially since that Mayor Mamdani's allies
believe that this is something important for him
to be able to help her during the election
that she delivers on raising taxes
as sort of a thank you for his help.
But Hochul has avoided answering directly
We'll see whether or not she's going to do that.
But a lot of excitement.
Hochul is supposed to be out here in just a few minutes.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli
and State Attorney General Letitia James both won their races.
They just both spoke on the podium.
And Hochul, we're just waiting for her in the next few minutes.
Steve and Natasha.
