What's Thunder Bay's secret to the perfect sandwich?
Nov 3, 2026
What makes a bad sandwich?
Bread?
We'll beep that.
Number 60!
It's National Sandwich Day and we are here at Maltese Grocery
in Thunder Bay where they've been carving up
and piling high meats for the better part of 85 years.
We're going to head inside now, find out what makes a primo sandwich.
What did you get here today?
Well, I got some mild Genoa, jalapeno, Havarti.
Tell me a little bit about your sandwich. Nice and simple,
just some mayo, some jalapeno, Havarti, prosciutto, nice and quick.
No veggies, unfortunately. I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy.
What are some of the things that you think make the ultimate sandwich?
It's the bread.
I'm a cheese guy, so I like a little spice with the cheese.
What are you getting today?
Lettuce, spinach, tomato, Swiss cheese,
salsa salami, hot chinoa, and honey ham.
So that's very specific. How did you come to that combination?
Lots of years.
How often do you come to Maltese?
Oftentimes I'm a regular, they know my name.
Is there a way to ruin a sandwich?
Too much meat.
How much is too much?
Mayonnaise.
Italians don't put mayonnaise in their sandwiches.
Did you know that it was National Sandwich Day?
No.
Well, you're in here ordering five sandwiches, so what's going on?
We're getting extra lunch for everyone.
What makes a good sandwich for you?
Mayonnaise, chipotle sauce, onions,
lettuce, of course the Cajun chicken.
What makes a bad sandwich?
Bread.
Red?
Oh, maybe.
We'll beep that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
How long have you been here for?
Oh, almost 38 years.
Too long.
We do hundreds of sandwiches a day, so...
Every day, hundreds of sandwiches?
Every day.
What do you think makes a great sandwich, in your eyes?
Simple.
Sometimes you overdo them.
You know, you could just put too much of everything on there.
Is it possible to ruin a sandwich?
Only if you drop it on the floor, maybe.
