AI GeneratedAmberlea Childs from Plant Joy demonstrates how to create a plant-based version of a traditional Sloppy Joe using lentils. This nutritious alternative is high in protein and fiber, budget-friendly, and designed to mimic the classic flavor profile of the original meat-based sandwich while remaining accessible through simple ingredient substitutions.
All righty, how about this?
Simplifying your menu while celebrating a beloved favorite.
Let's get into a dig down here.
Amberlea Childs here from Plant Joy
to help us celebrate National Sandwich Day
with a play on a traditional sloppy joe.
And both Donovan and I were like, well, that's not sloppy joe.
It's not meat.
What is it, Amberlea?
What are we doing?
Yes, it is lentils.
Lentils, okay.
Lentils.
Otherwise, most people eat lentils in soup.
Right.
But lentils are very versatile.
They're super high in protein.
So this beautiful sandwich, basically Sloppy Joe,
we're taking out the beef or, you know,
the ground turkey or whatever you would use as your protein,
and we're substituting lentils
as the protein.
Uh-huh.
Lentils.
This sandwich right here is about a half a cup.
18 grams of protein, so no one's missing out on their health,
their strength, their fiber,
eight grams of fiber.
I like this.
It's loaded with all the things you need.
It's going to have all the same flavor profiles of Sloppy Joe,
just like you're used to it.
But I can tell you what,
it is going to be way easier on your pocketbook and your budget
than, unfortunately, than some of our animal products.
Probably on your stomach, too.
Easier on that as well.
Wait, how do you make it flavorful?
Because that was my number one thing.
How do you, what seasoning, if any, do you use?
Sauce?
Yeah, so all of our spices are going to be over here.
So we've gotten these at Metro Market.
These are super easy grab-and-go items.
We've got some cumin spice.
Cumin is used a lot in Mexican food, Latin food.
We've got some chili powder.
You can put a little bit of heat
in that if you want to kind of bump it up.
And then we're going to sweeten it with a little bit of maple syrup.
Also could be substituted.
You know, you could use brown sugar.
You could just use maybe some agave.
It's just a sweetener that you already have at home.
I think what's really important when we look at recipes,
and this recipe is in, it was
in the Summer Metro Market Magazine,
so I'm super thrilled about that, but this recipe
is available online right now,
so people can go to the Metro Market website, you'll be
able to see a little bit about me,
and I'm a newer tastemaker, so I'm really excited
about the opportunity, but the recipe is listed there,
and people, if you don't have all the
ingredients, you can easily substitute something.
That's why I was talking about maple syrup.
People right now are just really looking at that budget.
It's really important to everybody.
And so we can find some things
that are maybe a little bit cheaper in price
and kind of hit our price point per family.
I'm glad you also brought all the ingredients
because I was looking at that
and it wasn't until I found the tomato paste.
Did I figure out what binds together?
Yeah, you know and that's what basically
all makes it stay on the bun it does
Yep, so the tomato paste is gonna be part of it,
but then also when the lentils get cooked
So then they are gonna release a little bit of like starchiness
And so that is gonna help them kind of coagulate
and stick together as well and then
I really think sloppy joe's really good
the day of but it's really great the next day.
It's kind of like that for a little bit
Yeah, marinade.
Yeah, exactly
Um, so here we've got a homemade slaw coleslaw that I did
And that's on here. Um, this is a little bit of a turmeric
and apple and carrot slaw that I made myself
We've got dill pickles.
Um, and so kind of depending on you know, this is a dill and mayonnaise
Coleslaw. So pretty simple to whip together.
I cheated. I cut a corner. I bought the bag of
coleslaw already done, which is really easy.
It's really inexpensive. You're going to find
it in the produce section. It's going to have the carrot,
the celery. It's going to have your
cabbage in there. And then you're going
to mix it together with a little bit of mayonnaise,
a little bit of acid. And then I like dill flavor.
So I threw some dill in there.
Yeah. And your dill pickle soup is amazing. That Plant Joy too.
So that sandwich itself,
do you sell it as the Sloppy Joe or do you sell it as a sandwich?
Yeah, so we sell the Sloppy Joe mix right now.
This week for our meal prep, we sold it as a bowl.
However, right now I have it sold.
Like this, so you can come in, you can buy it in a quart,
and then you can take it home and build your own sandwich.
So then you've got your own bread.
If you're gluten-free, you're like, I've got a gluten-free bun,
so then you can actually build it how you want.
I've got two forks over there.
All right, so what if we build it?
I'm going to start us off,
and I'm going to put the pickles on the bottom.
That way they don't move a lot.
When you're coming up with your menu,
how do you start when it comes to using a lentil?
Is it just one way that you're using it, or are you using it five ways?
No, I'm using...
I know it's all over you.
I use lentils.
So last week, we did a shepherd's pie,
and so it was a lentil shepherd's pie.
I've never heard of it.
Yeah, so it's the same thing.
We use carrot, celery, onion, and then a little bit of red wine.
And it's much healthier.
Yes, super healthy.
All right, now we're going to go over here,
and we're going to put on...
the goodies that we want. Can I ask you
why you put the pickles on the bottom?
Um just because I think well one that flavor
of the pickles is going to absorb into the bread
so the bread is going to take on a little bit more
of that vinegary dill flavor
and the coleslaw is going to be a little bit messy right
so putting more mess on
top of mess is just going to make it messy.
This is a messy dish right let's not kid ourselves
right but if you're a super pickle lover guess what we can top it off
Which I am.
Right?
With pickles on top.
So does the bread matter to you or just preference?
To me, it does.
I would toast this at home.
I would put it in the toaster oven, get it a little crunchy.
You could even throw it over a bun, a burger or something like that.
You know, whatever.
And then you're going to, you know, push it, tight it.
I feel like I've got a knife and fork.
That is a hearty thing.
All right.
I'll tell you what.
If you want to be kind to your outfit, you might want to go with a...
Fork?
Yes.
And maybe just taste it like that or maybe do a scoop?
We'll do both of them.
We'll do that and commercial break
so you guys won't watch us eat so messy.
We'll be right back with more of a Milwaukee.
Thank you so much.
This looks amazing.
Thank you.
Yeah.
