RCMP have charged a former Alberta hockey broadcaster
with sex offences involving minors.
39-year-old Tyler King was a play-by-play announcer
and executive with the Okotoks Oilers.
Following a two-year investigation,
police arrested King last week at a border crossing in Ontario.
King is facing three counts of luring a child under 18 years old,
sexual exploitation of a young person and making child pornography.
Police say there are three alleged victims
from Alberta and Saskatchewan,
all junior A hockey players,
but investigators wouldn't disclose which teams they played for.
And they say the alleged offenses happened between 2021
and 2022 during King's time in Okotoks.
An employee with the Okotoks Oilers made the initial complaint in 2024.
One of their former employees was soliciting
and compensating players for intimate images
and sexual videos.
Police say King also worked for hockey teams in Fort McMurray,
Brooks and Nanaimo,
B.C. and was currently working at a university in New York.
This was a complex investigation
that spanned multiple jurisdictions in Canada.
Involved multiple law enforcement agencies
and we wanted to make sure that we got it right.
In a statement, the chair of the organization says
the Okotoks Oilers were not aware of these
allegations while this individual was with our organization.
After his departure, we received
information that, while unverified at the time,
raised enough concern that we felt it needed a
closer look. The organization says it's cooperating fully
with the investigation. Police say King is
is currently in custody in Ontario.
But will be returned to Alberta this week.
