The National Transportation Safety Board
is investigating the crash of a private plane
in South Florida that killed nine people.
Fox News senior correspondent Jonathan Sary has the latest.
NTSB officials say weather conditions
are a major focus of their investigation
into Sunday's crash of a private Learjet 60
that killed all nine on board.
About 12:47 p.m. Eastern time, the crew transmitted to ATC.
That they were encountering light, clear ice,
which was manageable and also moderate turbulence.
Family members confirmed
to the New York Post 20-year-old Natalia Gedela Figueres
was co-piloting the flight from Austin, Texas to the Bahamas.
Flying through a storm cell,
she obtained permission to climb from 35,000 to 37,000 feet
to avoid precipitation. Instead, the plane started to lose altitude.
722 Bravo Delta, we're descending 8,000, mayday,
mayday, we're descending 10,000 feet per minute.
722 Bravo Delta, roger.
Declare emergency.
Less than a minute later, air traffic
controllers lost contact with the plane,
which went nose down into the ground on the side
of a major highway in Palm Beach County,
less than 10 miles from Mar-a-Lago.
President Trump had already departed the area on Air Force One,
and there was only one report of a minor injury on the ground.
However, first responders have relocated 600 residents
Residents from a mobile home community next to the crash site
until investigators can identify and remove all the debris.
It looked like a missile going down.
It left a big crater on the side of the road.
NTSB investigators say there's some evidence
the plane began to break apart prior to impact,
and so it's entirely possible additional debris could
be found far from the accident site.
In Atlanta, Jonathan Sary, Fox News.
It's a tough story. My heart really hurts for all the people impacted.
The families, right? The entire family just gone.
And just the video and the audio is very difficult to see and to hear.
All right, we'll take a break. We'll be right back.
