We Are Witnessing Something SPECIAL Right Now...| Carolina Hurricanes Update
Nov 3, 2026
We are without a doubt witnessing something very, very special.
The Carolina Hurricanes have a goaltender who simply refuses to lose.
And after what we witnessed against the Jets,
I'm starting to think he's going to be breaking some records.
He's going to be breaking some hearts everywhere.
And I really think he has come to play.
Even though he was doubted in the offseason.
Welcome to Hurricanes Digest.
I'm Jeff Testanero.
I invite you all to like, share, comment, and subscribe.
The push to 2,600 begins.
The word begins.
Well, it's been going on.
But get that running now.
We're almost, almost, almost there.

We are in the middle of something very special, Caniacs.
We really are.
Carolina absolutely,
positively demolished the Winnipeg Jets.
Absolutely demolished them.
Took them out, beat them up, dragged them behind the woodshed,
peppered them up a bit, and got Kozcheckov off.
His 10th win in a row, the Hurricanes did score seven goals.
It was a completed shutout
and another dominant performance by Pyotr Kozcheckov.
Here's the incredible part.
As we all know, he is now 10-0 to begin the season.
Ten victories.
And with each passing game, the argument
that Carolina has finally found its franchise goalie gets stronger.
Yeah, we had Freddie.
He just passed Freddie.
Bossy came in, saved the day in the Stanley Cup,
but Pyotr, man, you cannot argue against
Kozcheckov right now.
Let's look at what he did against Winnipeg.
26 shots faced, 26 saves, a perfect night in the crease.
Now I know what some people are thinking.
Carolina did score seven goals.
Nothing to really sneeze at there.
How difficult, you know, could that game have been for him?
But that's missing the point.
Great goaltending isn't always about sealing a 2-1 game.
Sometimes it's about never allowing your opponent
to get into the game in the first place.
And that's exactly what Kochetkov did.
Look at his game log real quick.
Right above my head, floating right above me here.
This isn't one outstanding performance surrounded by mediocre ones.
We're seeing consistency night after night after night,
and that's what separates a talented goalie
from a legit number one goaltender.
You can survive on occasional bad starts,
but when you're trying to win another Stanley Cup,
you need someone who gives you a chance every single night.
And right now, that's Pyotr Kochetkov.
And think about what this means for Carolina in the standings.
Each victory.
Each victory matters in the Metro.
Having a goalie who can consistently
turn competitive games into two points
is an enormous advantage no matter what time of year,
especially when the schedule gets difficult
and the games really start piling up.
We're going to see
a lot more Eastern Conference teams coming up very, very soon.
Now, this is where the story goes from impressive to historic.
Kochetkov's 10 consecutive victories to begin
the season put him alongside Carey Price.
Yes, Montreal Canadiens Carey Price, the former Canadiens superstar,
Hart Trophy winner, Vesna Trophy winner.
Price opened the 2016-2017 season with 10 consecutive victories,
and Kochetkov has now matched that mark.
He's sitting one win, one win away.
Away from actually tying the all-time record.
Jack Campbell won his first 11 decisions
with Toronto in 2020, 2020, 2021.
That's the NHL record for consecutive victories to begin the season,
which means Kochetkov is one win away from tying the all-time record.
One more victory, and he shares a place in NHL history,
and that's a plaque up in Toronto in the Hall of Fame no matter what.
Think about the company we're discussing, Price, Campbell, Kochetkov.
This isn't some obscure Hurricanes, you know,
out of nowhere, you know, this is just some
random milestone.
We're talking about the NHL record book.
And the next time Kochetkov steps into that crease,
he could be playing for a lot more
of a piece of history if he ties it and then he does it.
I mean, that's just another big step for him
and another big moment for this franchise.
And what's remarkable is that his overall
performance backs up the streak.
He's not simply benefiting from a team scoring five
or six goals every night.
He's putting up the numbers of a genuinely elite starting goaltender,
but the NHL record is the only history he's making.
Kochetkov has passed Kevin Weeks for fourth place
on the Hurricanes all-time saves list.
He's now at 2,982 career saves.
That's 75 more than Weeks.
And remember, we're talking about a goaltender.
Who still has a substantial part of his career ahead of him.
Also, it's only November 2nd.
We got a whole season left to go.
He's also collected 81 regular season victories and 13 career shutouts.
Those are the kinds of numbers that start building a franchise legend.
Legend.
Now, I'm not putting him ahead of Cam Ward.
Not yet.
Not yet.
Don't worry.
I'm not going to leave him above Cam.
But we're reaching the point where Kochetkov deserves
to be part of the conversation
about Carolina's long-term future in net.
And when you look back through these starts, you see why.
The Hurricanes aren't relying on one spectacular night.
They're getting reliable goaltending over an extended stretch.
That's exactly what a championship contender needs to do.
And here's why the stats become even more convincing.
Kochetkov has delivered nine quality starts
and his first 10 appearances, nine.
That's not getting lucky.
That's a goalie giving his team a strong chance to win
every single time he plays, every time.
Through 10 starts,
Kochetkov owns a .929 save percentage and 1.93 goals against average.
He's also recorded two shutouts.
Those are outstanding numbers.
And they're especially encouraging
because Carolina doesn't need him to be spectacular
every single night.
It needs him to be consistent.
And consistency is what Piotr's been showing.
Look at the save percentage chart.
Across these 10 games,
this is what matters to me more than the undefeated record.
Winning streaks is going to end.
He's going to lose a game.
But the underlying performance tells you whether
a goaltender can sustain success.
And Kochetkov's performance suggests this isn't just a temporary run.
He's developing into the kind of goalie Carolina needs to build around.
Now there's one major question remaining.
And we're not there.
But it's the playoffs.
Because an impressive regular season run has
been postseason hockey is an entire different challenge.
Coach Chekhov's career playoff record is 2-5.
His save percentage is .860,
with a 3.83 goals against average across 13 appearances.
Those aren't championship caliber numbers,
and we can't pretend that they don't exist.
But here's why I'm optimistic.
Goaltenders do develop over time.
Experience matters.
Confidence matters.
And sometimes a player who struggles early in his career
eventually becomes the guy, you know, we're looking at.
The question is whether we're watching
a transformation happen before our eyes right now.
As we look ahead at Carolina's schedule,
every start becomes another opportunity for Piotr to prove himself.
The next victory could tie the NHL record,
but the bigger objective is still waiting in the spring.
Carolina doesn't need a goalie who can win.
You know, 10 straight in November,
it needs a goalie who can win four playoff games in
a whole series, 16 to win the cup.
That's all you need.
And eventually 16 games, you know,
it's going to weigh on you just a little bit.
Do you think Piotr is the guy?
Let me know.
Let me know.
We do need to discuss something.
You know what I'm not crazy about as much as I am crazy?
And you're going to crucify me for this?
I know you are, and I really don't care.
Come on for me.
What is that?
What is that?
I mean, at least they got the team colors right, right?
Fanatics released their city heritage whatevers.
I mean, go look at the Penguins uniform.
That is terrible.
The Ducks one's kind of cool.
It goes back to the first movie, you know, when they were D-13.
Quack, quack, quack, Mr. Duckworth.
But what is that?
I understand.
It's the NC State mascot logo.
On the jersey, turned into Stormy the Pig.
I understand the pig farming history around Raleigh.
I get it.
Trust me.
But why is there a pig on the front
of the Stanley Cup champions jersey?
Come on.
You could have done something better than that.
Come on, fanatics.
Who signed off on this?
I understand the history.
I understand all that.
I understand.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
But history, come on.
You put a pig on the front of our jersey.
Please tell me they're not going to wear these a lot.
Please, please, please, please, please.
I understand some of you are out there saying they love it
and it's great and they're going to buy one.
You go ahead.
You spend $300 on this thing.
I'm not buying a pig on my jersey.
It's not happening.
That is a pig.
It's a pig.
Again, I understand the history.
I understand you're trying to make it look like
the NC State mascot, whatever.
But you're not.
You put a pig in front of our jersey, like, get out of here.
So, Piotr's looking history directly in the face.
That's good to have.
That's good to know.
If anything else comes back down, I'll be the first to let you know.
Until then, for Hurricanes Digest, I'm Jeff Testanero.
Let's go Canes.
Okay.
