This is Live View 5.
I believe that this is outside of a high school that is in the Bronx,
a Bronx school community grieving after
a 15-year-old boy named Javits Frimpong
was chased and fatally shot on his way to school.
Tyler, can we just jump up to that Live View 5?
Because that's happening right now.
So I don't know if everybody's familiar with this story.
You saw it here first on Newsroom Live last week.
This was that 15-year-old who was shot in the Bronx, chased.
Um, chased down and, uh, fatally killed.
Well, we're hearing this morning that there was a
walkout at Dream Yard Preparatory School where Frimpong's father says
his son had been bullied.
Um, you can see those kids there holding that sign,
uh, Justice for Javits. Um, it looks like
this interview is happening right now. So let's
just jump to this interview. Let's take a listen.
We want to stop
the gun violence.
We want, if there's somebody that's obviously, like,
in that type of, like, violence with guns and stuff,
they shouldn't be attending the school
or they shouldn't be bringing their problems into the school
and also to innocent kids in the school.
We want to put a stop to all of that.
All right, so taking a listen to that student,
his name is Denzel, really sort of crystallized
what so many people are feeling,
the concerns about gun violence here in New York City.
So just if you're not familiar with this case,
this is one that really has captured
the attention, not just of people here in the city,
but all across this country.
There was a young man, his name is Javits.
Frimpong, who was chased
and fatally shot on his way and his walk to school.
This happened last week.
This is a student walkout that happened this morning.
It's literally happening right now as we speak.
And even this morning, police, there's the young boy right there.
Police are searching for three teenagers.
But so far, no arrests have been announced,
even though it seems like they do know.
Uh, who may have been doing some of the bullying here, it's unclear if
they believe that those people are 100% connected to the shooting here.
That's the shooting right there.
You can see him literally running for his life, um, when he was shot.
He was taken to a local hospital, pronounced dead.
Authorities searching for those teenage boys
in connection to that shooting.
Uh, the surveillance video that we just shot reportedly shows Frimpong
Phong running with someone dressed in black following behind him.
Other footage appears to show masked people in dark clothing.
His father, a man named Thomas Frimpong, says the school principal
told him that two students had been suspended for harassing his son.
The principal could not be reached for comment
when we reached out earlier.
Police have not definitively said if this was an act of bullying
and sort of part of that.
But it is clear that it is one of the aspects
that they are looking for here.
Yeah.
And
One of the most heartbreaking things from Frimpong,
this young boy had arrived in the U.S. from Ghana
about a year ago to reunite with his father.
To begin a new life here, his father described him as just a quiet kid,
and you can see what's happening this morning
on the lower portion of your screen.
Those students who have walked out of their school,
the Dream Yard Preparatory School,
and they are calling for justice, those signs that they have there.
One final note here before we move on.
Mayor Mamdani has asked President Trump that this young boy's mother.
Be allowed to have a visa
and travel here to say her goodbyes with the funeral.
And it sounds like President Trump has approved that.
That's something that happened this weekend.
But again, live this morning, those students walking out
of the school in honor of that young man, Javits Frimpong.
We wanted to show it to you because it
was happening as we were coming on the air.
