And one of the big stories making international
and national attention has everything to do
with who threw their support behind Mike Rogers,
who's running for Senate. We're talking about
Former Senate candidate
and current Congresswoman Haley Stevens throwing her support
to Mike Rogers in a very stunning move that happened this weekend.
And yes, it has the entire political world talking, but even those who
are casual observers of politics are talking about this as well.
Fox 2's Dave Spencer is live in Troy,
the district that Congresswoman Stevens actually represents.
And hey, she's not the only one throwing her support to Rogers tonight.
What's going on, Dave?
Yeah, the members of the GOP here held an impromptu news conference,
what they're calling an emergency news conference
that just wrapped up a few seconds ago, standing side by side
with prominent members of faith-based communities, Jewish communities,
Chaldean communities, members of the black community, also candidates.
Representing those people as well,
Republican candidates standing there saying that they
welcome Haley Stevens and her support of Mike Rogers with open arms,
saying this is an endorsement
that they should not be chastised by the Democratic Party.
And they wanna say that she is welcome here, at least for her support.
When it comes to Mike Rogers,
Haley Stevens herself saying that she stands with Mike Rogers
only in opposition to El Sayed, considers herself,
at least the last time she spoke
With the media, a member of the Democratic Party.
On the other side, however, you have Democrats saying,
prominent ones, the chair of the Democratic
Party even saying she is no longer welcome in the Democratic Party.
And we've been speaking with political strategists
who say those Democrats are now circling the
wagons if you will, rallying together.
In fact, they've seen a bump in the amount
of funds that raised close to $2 million in
24 hours that was raised.
After Haley Stevens announced that she's supporting Mike Rogers,
so you have two different
camps trying to take advantage of what they see
as a switch of alliances here.
And we heard from the GOP just moments ago,
here's what they had to say inside the room
behind me.
Just take a look at Haley Stevens video, right?
Instead of listening to all these folks coming out against
her on the Democrat side, listen
to her video.
Take a moment and ask yourself,
why is this four-term congresswoman, right?
And the Democrat Party is known to stick together, I'll tell you that.
And for her to do something like this,
I would just ask our Democrat friends, independents,
to really listen to what Haley is saying and think to yourself,
you know, maybe she's on to something with that.
Members of other Jewish communities,
Progress Michigan, were also in attendance saying that
this GOP conference doesn't speak for all Jews.
They see it a different way.
They say Al-Sayed still has their support
because anything to take away power from President
Trump and Mike Rogers is a win in their book,
even if that means siding with El-Sayed, hoping
that other Democrats and other Jewish members...
Feel the same way as well.
So it'll be interesting to see if this change
in allegiance will move the polls at all as
we kind of inch closer towards Election Day.
And with many ballots already cast,
it'll be interesting to see how much impact this
truly has.
Reporting live tonight in Troy, Dave Spencer.
Fox 2 News.
Yeah, Dave, even political scientists can't quite put
their finger on Michigan right now,
given the fact that everything that's happening is so unconventional.
You had President Obama, the former president in town last weekend,
President Trump in town, both touting their Senate candidates.
And now to have Haley Stevens step away,
you wonder what that does to the 67% of the people
who voted for her in the primary against Al-Sayed.
Does it move the meter with them at all,
or does the Obama effect take effect instead?
Yeah, that will be something that will be analyzed after the campaign
is over and on whether or not that had much to do with anything.
I mean, if it's a close race, if it comes down to a few thousand votes,
then I think we could assume that that did have some impact here.
Yeah, we'll be watching it closely.
And of course, our election coverage continues right from right now
this weekend and goes all the way until the last vote is count.
We thank you, Dave Spencer, for that live report tonight.
