Returning to Florida now where nine people
are dead after a business jet
nosedived into a residential neighborhood.
The fiery aftermath left behind a massive crater.
No one on the ground was killed
but people did gather at the crash scene after narrowly
avoiding disaster themselves.
Marianne the investigation now going to focus on this.
Awful, haunting air traffic control audio that's now out there.
And in that audio, David, you can hear the pilot describing ice
accumulation on the aircraft and even turbulence in the moments before
this fiery crash that killed all nine people on board.
The FAA saying this is a Learjet 60 aircraft
that was traveling from Texas to Bahamas when it went down
in Palm Beach County in South Florida, narrowly missing.
Not only the people who are on the ground
there watching the aftermath of this,
but the cars driving by, it is right off the side of the road,
and also just feet from homes.
So this could have been much worse.
We know there have been no injuries reported on the ground.
The question is, why did this happen?
And looking to that audio that was recorded between the pilot
and air traffic control,
you can hear the pilot's Mayday call.
1-3-7-0-2-Bravo-Delta.
7-2-2-Bravo-Delta, we're descending 8,000.
Mayday, Mayday, we're descending 10,000 feet per minute.
First responders were quickly there at the scene.
Again, it was a fiery crash and a big crater left behind.
So close to people who could have also been injured.
First responders were there for quite some time.
This is the area of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North,
for those who are familiar with this area of Palm Beach County.
It is not clear exactly who was on board.
Their identities have not yet been released.
Officials saying at this point it was a privately operated plane.
But Florida's governor is expressing concern about...
Just how quickly and violently this crash happened.
It's a jarring thing. It was like a missile coming down
and a massive explosion, debris going everywhere.
Where and.
And to have those people on board is really
a tragic way to see people pass away.
So we should offer our thoughts and prayers with their family.
I don't know if any of them were Floridians.
There will obviously be more information
on this as the hours and days go.
But it was a big-time tragedy that happened.
The severity of that impact has left this massive crater.
So when that pilot was describing 10,000 feet a minute,
in terms of the descent rate...
That is 50 meters a second, and you get the sense of why
the governor would refer to it almost like a missile coming down.
Right, a very steep drop, nose first, into the ground there,
creating that fiery crater, and it really could have been much worse.
We often hear that when we hear tragedies like this,
but in this case in particular, that certainly was the case,
because you can see how close pedestrians are,
you can see it's just off the side of the road.
Feet from a trailer park, a lot of people
and a lot of homes were near there.
In fact, a lot of people, hundreds of them,
couldn't get into their homes last night
because of where the crash scene was and how close it was to residents.
We heard from some people who not only saw this unfold,
but they also felt it because the impact was so strong.
I came out and my wife, she was frozen.
I'm like, what was that?
We came out, all the neighbours were outside already.
It was just a really, really loud noise,
like, shook the house, the lights flickered.
The police was just pulling up, and we seen the crater,
and the crater was just so deep,
it had, like, water in it, and, you know,
we didn't know what to think it was.
There was a lot of confusion, David,
people right up to that fiery crater until they realized,
oh, this is very dangerous, this was a fatal plane crash,
and then the roads were closed to keep people back.
That air traffic control traffic in which the pilot
is describing ice building up on the aircraft,
of course, if that was the cause here, and we don't know,
but if that was an issue, that essentially...
...renders those wings unable to maintain lift,
and it will be a key focus for investigators.
They'll be focusing on that. They're
looking for the flight data recorder.
It's unclear whether that's been located
or if it even survived that crash, if it was destroyed,
and if they can even glean anything from it if they do find it.
So they're looking at that.
The NTSB does have investigators there right now.
They are going to have an update later today.
We're just waiting to find out when and where that will happen.
So we're watching for any updates there.
And then you see this, a lot of dash cam footage
and footage taken from people driving by.
That will also be key in this investigation as well.
All right, Marianne, thank you very much.
