AI GeneratedThe Golden Gate Half Marathon and 5K took place in San Francisco the day after Halloween. The event featured runners crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, with the half marathon winner, Spencer from Pacifica, finishing in under 1 hour and 10 minutes. The races concluded at Ghirardelli Square, serving as a key event for many participants in the California Nine race series.
Some folks up nice and bright and early this morning
because it's the Golden Gate Half
Marathon and 5K in the city.
Yeah, maybe they're running off all the candy and the Halloween treats.
Let's check in with Devin Truby in San Francisco this morning.
Looks like you're at the finish line, Devin.
Yeah, good morning from the finish line, Frank and Allie.
We have had quite a few of our 5Kers cross this morning.
They started at 7.15, and if you see that gentleman there
in the sort of blue race shirt
with the medal around his neck, that is Spencer.
And he has won the Golden Gate Half Marathon with a time sub 1.10.
And, uh...
We have our first two male finishers still waiting
on our first woman to finish.
Hi, Spencer, right?
Yes.
Yeah.
Congratulations on winning.
Tell us, where are you from?
I'm from...
I live in Pacifica right now, but I'm from San Diego.
So...
And I heard you're also doing the California 9,
so running where you run multiple
of these races.
No.
No.
So the only...
This is...
I'm just getting back to competing since college.
I'm 28, so it's been a while.
I did the marathon here in like, I think it was July.
And this is my second race back,
so I'm hoping to find some more races to do.
I should start looking.
I'm really bad at looking for races.
And what did you love about this race,
the opportunity to run across the Golden Gate Bridge?
Yeah, I mean, the weather's super beautiful.
I thought it was going to rain today.
Luckily, the sun came out.
Well, um...
Yeah, I love running across the bridge.
It's tough.
The bridge is actually pretty hilly.
It's kind of sneaky hilly.
But, yeah, I mean, I just live like 25 minutes away.
It's nice to just...
Roll out of bed and come down here early in the morning.
And why do you love running?
And why did you do this the day after Halloween of all days?
Yeah, I love Halloween.
It just happened that this race came right
after Halloween, so I thought, why not?
You know, I grew up running.
I've always been good at it.
It sucks sometimes, but, yeah, I mean,
it's just something that I've grown up doing,
so that's all I know, really.
Well, congratulations again.
Thank you so much.
Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you.
Yeah, so we are waiting on our first female finisher
of the half marathon.
That is 13.1 miles.
Course started kind of over towards Fort Mason Marina area.
They go back and forth over the Golden Gate Bridge
and then finish here in Ghirardelli Square.
Then, of course, we have our 5K, which is a nice, good warmup,
a good taste of running, what it's
like to kind of run in the city,
Get used to running on a hillier course for some folks.
We've had quite a few of those people already finished this morning.
Staggered start, so they were at 7:15.
Our half marathoners were at 6:50.
And then there is the big party at the end here
at Ghirardelli Square from 7 to 11 a.m.
So that's very exciting.
If you can avoid driving down along the waterfront for this morning,
at least until afternoon hours, I would recommend you do so
while they're working to clean up the course.
Our 5K runners get one hour for the course.
And for our half marathoners,
they have to be past certain checkpoints at certain times
because they want to kind of control
the pedestrian access and make sure that
no one is on the bridge past certain times.
So definitely a very important race.
For a lot of people, it is part of the California Nine,
which is nine races in eight different cities,
all up and down the coast of California,
from Santa Cruz to Malibu, Napa.
The final of the California Nine is next weekend in Malibu
as they kind of finish out their half marathon season.
You have to compete in at least two of the events,
and it looks like we're getting a look at this photo here.
We have our top three male finishers for the Golden Gate half marathon.
So an exciting time the day after Halloween.
Halloween here in the city of San Francisco,
the city alive, Halloween, Valkyries win,
and now we are on our way to the half marathon this morning.
Certainly no shortage of excitement.
Frank, Allie.
