Stevens, I'm a proud Democrat
and I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate.
A grand old party crasher,
Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens with some fireworks in her rift
with Abdul El-Sayed as she makes an explosive announcement today.
Hello and welcome to Fox 2 News at 6.
I'm Dave Spencer.
As the clock ticks towards the election,
development today that has the political pendulum swinging
towards Republican Mike Rogers.
Haley Stevens is throwing a last minute jab
in this bruising campaign fight with words
that cut deep as she says she's voting red.
Fox 2's Camila Mary live tonight with the latest
on the election bait and switch.
She's in Southfield.
Camille, what is the fallout of all this?
This is just crazy.
I mean, talk about the 11th hour,
and usually we have a surprise in October,
but here we are, November 1st.
We're live in Southfield right now
where Abdul El-Sayed had basically a rally.
It just wrapped up.
He did not take questions.
He took questions earlier,
but we're going to get to that in a little bit.
But now the big story, of course,
Haley Stevens endorsing Mike Rogers,
going to church with him today,
and then addressing the media after.
And in case you're not from here,
in case you've been living under a rock,
Haley Stevens, of course, ran against Abdul El-Sayed,
both Democrats in the primary.
She's a Congresswoman, both Democrats.
She lost to Abdul El-Sayed.
She endorsed him.
She was supposed to go to an event with him this weekend,
and he said he didn't want the
distraction.
And then all of a sudden, a big turn of events.
Take a listen.
This is a very close election. We all know that.
But Abdul made very clear that I was not welcome
In his campaign, that he didn't need me there,
that he didn't want me there.
This was a personal and private decision.
I woke up this morning and I decided to go to church.
And I'm here with the person who I am voting for,
for United States Senate.
And that is Mike Rogers.
This is more a statement about standing together against hate
and the future of this state and this country than it is anything else.
And I just want you to know, she reminded me at the end of the call.
Remember, I'm still a Democrat. Back here live, of course, I said that
Abdul El-Sayed had not addressing crowds of media,
I should say, here at this rally here in Southfield.
But earlier he did talk about this whole turn of events
and here's his reaction.
At the end of the day, I actually don't think about Haley Stevens.
You know what I'm saying?
I think about the, like I said,
the 9,999,998 people who are not those two.
Because you know what?
I'm just less interested in the politics
of it all than I am in the policy of it all.
And so, look, if you're somebody
who believes that we ought to have more rights, not less,
then I would think you would support me in this race.
The principles that we believe in as Democrats are really quite clear.
I stand for all of them.
Yeah, and he talks about the important issues to him,
gas, groceries, health care.
He says those are his concerns, those are his priorities,
not all of this nonsense is what he called it yesterday.
Meanwhile, Democratic leaders are condemning Trump.
Haley Stevens and her actions, basically kicking her out of the party,
saying she's not welcome, calling her a traitor.
A lot of fallout on this one and a lot more to come.
I know we've got two days before the election
and who knows what will happen next.
But definitely a surprise that I think maybe some people saw coming.
Mike Rogers did hint about it yesterday.
He said he had extended the invitation
to her to come to church with him.
But she took him up on the offer, and here we are.
Reporting live in Southfield, Camille and Mary, Fox 2 News.
Yeah, Camille, as you mentioned, we only have two days,
so it'll be interesting to see how much weight this really plays in.
I know a lot of people took part in early voting and absentee voting,
so it'll be interesting.
I know a lot of people will be questioned about this
as they hit the campaign trail
for these final two days, but it's real impact.
Yeah, absolutely.
I mean, is this going to change anyone's mind?
I mean, we do know there is a group of Democrats for Rogers.
We know there's been that whole movement throughout this campaign,
but so many people have already
voted early voting and of course absentee.
And then a lot of people already have their minds made up
and Haley Stevens switching
to endorse Mike Rogers isn't going to change their minds.
We will, of course, have to see because in the polling,
it's putting these guys pretty close.
I know polls aren't always accurate, but,
of course, we're going to have to see what happens.
But still, just a race that everyone
is looking at all over the country.
And now this, I mean, you can't make this stuff up.
Yeah, it certainly is tightening up.
Camille, thank you for that live report.
We're going to stay right there.
Lots of reaction pouring in in the news
of Haley Stevens' endorsement of Mike Rogers.
Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Chris Hertel says Stevens...
...is no longer a current member of the Michigan Democratic Party,
nor will she be in the future.
The Democratic National Committee's Black Caucus releasing
this statement, it reads in part, quote,
We are dismayed that Congresswoman Haley Stevens has revealed herself
to be a sellout who used black Michiganders for a political stunt.
Congresswoman Stevens has lost her way, and Michiganders know
that Mike Rogers is a shill for Trump and has failed Michigan.
Again, we are ready to elect Abdul.
Al-Sayed on Tuesday, end quote.
President Donald Trump inviting Haley Stevens to join
the Republican Party today.
He's posting this statement, reading in part, quote,
Haley Stevens said what few people are willing to say.
She showed great and almost unprecedented
loyalty to the great people of Michigan with what she did.
This is a thing called bravery.
And few people have it like just displayed
by Congresswoman Haley Stevens, end quote.
