And if you are hunting for Halloween thrills,
a piece of Tampa history has been overrun by nightmares.
The historic World War II cargo ship, the SS American Victory,
has once again transformed into undead in the water.
You creeped out yet?
A haunted attraction packed with tight corridors, dark cargo holds,
and, you know, of course, living dead lurking around every bulkhead.
Fox 13's Heather Healy went aboard to see what this is all about.
Step aboard, if you dare.
This Halloween, Tampa's historic American victory ship
has transformed into a floating nightmare.
This is what you're gonna experience!
Welcome to Undead in the Water.
It's a huge hit. People love to get scared.
Visitors navigate dark corridors and multiple decks,
all while trying to survive a zombie apocalypse.
Our biggest goal is to make sure every night
is not only cohesive and fun,
but we give every guest the same experience, or as close as we can.
It's scaring a person and making their friend watch them
and have a good time.
And then it's the scream and then...
But behind the scares is a ship with a remarkable history.
Welcome aboard Florida's recently named state flagship.
We're pretty proud of that.
So this is the American Victory 1534 that was built for World War II.
One of three that remain, and it served in World War II Korea
and Vietnam, and as I like to say, still serves today.
We do a lot of training with active duty reserve troops,
police officers, firefighters, working dogs, you name it.
We do a lot here in the community. We're really proud of that.
Having multiple events run throughout the year.
So coming up in November, we do have
Veterans Day, which we'll be celebrating.
We're hoping to have some World War II vets on board.
We're going to have a two-year-old bald eagle named Miss America.
So for educational purposes, you can come
learn about and get photo ops with her.
Hopefully some military vehicles on the dock,
some pinups and some betties,
and then the sea cadets, some ceremonials throughout the day,
the national anthem at noon
by some harmonica gentlemen who came from Bay Pines,
so it's going to be fun.
And some believe the ship is still haunted
with reports of strange noises and shadows.
We do get a lot of ghost hunters on board.
A lot of them say they found stuff.
A lot of it happens in the same places all the time.
I'll let you be the judge.
Real ghosts or not?
There's no shortage of scares here in Tampa.
Heather Healy, Fox 13 News.
I'll go to the Veterans Day stuff.
Miss me with the haunted stuff. Although if you want to go
on Dead in the Water, run select nights through
the Halloween season in Channel Side. Capacity
board, by the way, the ship is limited each night.
So organizers recommend buying tickets
online in advance and they are already looking forward
to next Halloween spooky season.
