Social media videos are circulating online encouraging people
to wear costumes and masks to protests scheduled for October 31st.
The French government says not so fast, making it clear that Halloween
is not a legitimate reason for someone to hide their face in public
and cause chaos. The Paris police prefecture says
for Saturday wearing a mask is not allowed.
The owner of this costume shop says she's noticing a trend.
These are the ones I've sold a lot of,
the scream mask, the ghost face, and the joker masks.
I'm a joker.
She says she's sold more of these masks this year than in years past.
They don't tell me directly.
They don't tell me directly they're buying it for the protest,
but I hear that when they talk to each other.
They say it's great for the demonstration.
I understand this worries authorities
because obviously it hides their faces.
But then there are also people who don't have bad intentions.
With bad intentions.
Some customers say they disagree with the ban.
We march, but we are not violent.
I want to mark Halloween and defend my rights.
I get it, but don't forget there were rioters
at the other demonstrations with and without masks.
People wearing a mask near
or within the demonstration could face a fine of 1,500 euros
and up to 15,000 euros for disturbing public order,
according to French law.
The penal code provides that it is an offence
to participate in a demonstration
where there are disturbances or risks of disturbances to public order
while having one's face concealed.
It is.
It is legal for someone to wear a mask
to celebrate Halloween outside the demonstration.
A mask that would be worn on Halloween.
It could be considered an aggravated circumstance
if someone voluntarily hides their face in cases of theft or violence.
