Let's cross now to our reporter in the Capitol, Emerald Maxwell.
So Emerald, despite government pledges earlier this week,
protesters back on the streets,
what's the atmosphere like where you are?
Well, the protest is yet to start.
It kicks off at 2 p.m. So no press protesters as of yet,
but plenty of police.
Laurent Nunez, the interior minister, has promised 70,000
police officers and gendarmes on the streets of France today.
And you can see there's a few vans behind me.
There's also quite a few vans which we've seen them drive past
in the half an hour that we've been here,
setting up, getting ready for the protest in a few hours.
We also saw some removing some bikes which had been locked.
They actually came and broke the locks
and piled them into the back of a van presumably
to stop
very
much.
using them
be held here on
the outskirts
of the city.
It was going to be in the centre of town.
That's what the protesters wanted.
There was a bit of a row.
And then finally, the government won.
And it's going to be held here on the outskirts of the city.
the city where it is easier to contain for the police.
They've also closed a lot of dozens of metro stations around town.
There will be curfews later tonight
from 11 p.m. in certain parts of Paris.
And that's because they're very well aware
of the anger that's still on the streets
in these movements because of course those students have
been joined by yellow vest protesters and the
movement has really widened.
It's not just about those initial demands that the high schoolers had,
demands which the government went some way
to meeting earlier this week with new pledges
for more places in higher education for instance,
but now it's a lot about a lot more than that.
It's come about the cost of living, the high cost of living.
And also about civil liberties
and racial injustice and the right to protest.
And that's after the perceived or real heavy-handedness
of police towards protesters since the movement began in September.
Emerald, thank you so much for keeping us updated.
Of course, we'll be checking in with you throughout the day.
That's Emerald Maxwell there in Paris.
