Tense moments in the city's Germantown section
when a Philadelphia police officer was struck by a car.
New surveillance video shows what happened earlier
this evening during heavy traffic on Germantown Avenue
as the driver was attempting to get away.
Action News reporter Leland Pinder is following the story,
and is live from Philadelphia Police Headquarters
with a closer look at that video.
Leland.
Rick, and police say that police officer
is in stable condition tonight, and that's pretty remarkable
when you consider the impact that was captured on camera.
Around 5 p.m. Friday in the 5600 block of Germantown Avenue,
a black vehicle approaches the traffic honking its horn.
The driver then tries to force his way through,
crashing into several other vehicles.
Moments later, a police cruiser pulls up
and officers jump out and draw their weapons.
That's when the vehicle accelerates toward an officer, striking him.
We froze the video at the moment of impact.
The force of the crash caused the vehicle
to briefly come off the ground.
Moments later, officers pull the driver from the car
and take him into custody.
A woman working at a daycare near
the scene described what she saw after hearing the crashes.
Then we saw the cops get out of their cars
and begin to draw their guns.
And we did a code blue, and that means we did a code blue
and removed all the children.
So we went to the back of the building.
So why was that driver so intent on getting away from police?
Well we just don't know right now.
The investigation here is ongoing.
Police not saying what led up to this incident,
but for now also no word on any charges
that driver could be facing. We're here outside
police headquarters. Leland Pinder, Channel 6 Action News.
All right Leland, thank you.
