Four people are rushed to the hospital today
after being struck by lightning. It happened
as strong storms moved through the West Valley this morning.
One of those lightning bolts landed
near a school bus stop in El Mirage.
Let's get right out to Brian Webb. He is live with
the very latest on this and man this could have been a lot worse Brian.
Yeah, we're standing in front of El Mirage Elementary School where
this happened. I'm told the four victims are all school employees
and that no children were hurt. Let me show you where it happened.
The bus drop off area is on the backside of this building
on the west side of the school happened right about 8:30
a.m. While students were coming to school right at the same time,
that strong storm hit the area.
Heavy rain, lots of lightning, but I'm told
One of those bolts was stronger than the others and landed with a large
thunderclap scaring everyone around
and then they realized four people were hurt.
The fire captain who responded tells me they likely did
not take a direct hit
and that one of them was holding an umbrella
which could have attracted the lightning bolt, who knows,
but it was bad enough that they had to go
to the hospital. I did speak to one
teacher who was there when it happened.
She was not hit but definitely shaken up.
My heart was pounding so hard.
The kids were scared, so I was trying to stay calm for them.
Took them in quickly, but my heart was just pounding.
I was terrified for them.
So there is a fire station right across the street.
The fire captain was one of the first
responders. He tells me that the victims were conscious
and talking as they were taken to the
hospital, so they should be okay.
And again, no children were hurt. Live in El Mirage,
I'm Brian Webb, Fox 10 News.
Very scary situation out there, Brian. Thank you.
