Former chess champ Orrin Hudson using the game
to teach kids critical thinking skills
and prevent gun violence.
How does all that go together?
Our Eli Jordan live with Orrin
and his students ahead of this Saturday's special event.
Hey, Eli.
Hey, Tom. Yeah, I mean, you know, chess goes way back.
I mean, even some of our greatest military generals, well,
they all knew chess because they knew chess slowed them down,
made them think slower and come up with strategies.
And that's what Mr. Orrin Hudson.
Chess champion believes we're missing in today's society because he's
been saying he's been reading too much about violence and he wants
to kind of put these kids, they're out there making bad decisions
on a better path and he thinks chess can do that.
And he's having a little workshop on Saturday and it's Halloween.
He's got some kids over here now.
Playing some chess, but Orrin, how you doing?
Best day of my life because we're
going to do a Stop the Violence rally.
It's going to be free food, free parking, free training.
Chess saved my life.
A white teacher in an all-black high school pulled me to the side
and taught me how to play chess, bought me a book.
The book changed my life.
So I'm living my dream because I'm paying it forward,
teaching young people, stop the violence.
Human life has value.
Slow down.
Pause.
Chill out.
Relax.
Think it through.
Thank you.
24 hours before you make a decision.
Don't make a hasty decision.
Trouble is easy to get into and hard to get out.
My message is brains beats bullets.
24-7, 365.
Think thrice and save a life.
So what's going to be happening Saturday?
We're going to be teaching them the new weapon of choice.
The new weapon of choice is a king, a queen, and a pawn, not a gun.
This is the weapon I want you to use.
Beat me on the board.
To attack the piece, not the person.
Human life has value.
I want people to know that when you move with love,
you will always reach your destination
because God is love.
So I want people to come.
We're going to feed you for free.
We're going to teach you for free.
And I want people to go to besomeone.org
and support the work that we're doing.
You don't have to sign up.
Just show up at 949 Stevenson Road.
We're across the street from Stevenson Middle School.
Cross the street, 949 Stevenson Road, Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Georgia, I want you to show up because...
Because if you show up, you're going to go up.
And something about the word free motivates me.
So it's a totally free, free food, free parking.
And I'm going to get somebody going to walk out with this gold belt.
Let's go.
Uh oh.
Somebody going to walk out with the gold belt.
And I'm going to be honest with you.
It's easy to beat me because I only know a teeny little bit.
I'm in pre-K.
I was on Good Morning America.
50 people at once.
Wrong station, though.
We're not.
They said you beat 50 people at once.
You're good.
I said, no, I'm in pre-K.
And I'm never going to get out of pre-K
because school is never out for the pros.
So come win this gold belt.
And Saturday is totally free.
So tell me, if people are interested in coming and checking it out,
bringing the kiddos to the chess workshop,
what's a good website they need to go to?
BeSomeone.org.
And also go on Instagram, BeSomeoneOnline.
And Facebook is Orrin Check.

They got married by the bishop. They ran off on a night
and they went to the castle and the pawns up the shoulder.

My company's called Be Someone.
And these kids though, you're going to get all
that information to them in one day, in
an hour and a half on Saturday?
No, it's ongoing because when they come to me, my program never ends.
I have a lifetime membership and it's totally free.
I want people to know that I'm all in.
I converted my personal home into a training center
because I'm committed to doing everything in my God-given power
to teach young people to think it out, don't shoot it out.
The only way to fight is to use your head.
Brains before bullets.
Brains before bullets.
Think it out, don't shoot it out.
All right, so real quick, tell me your address again
and tell me your website and the time Saturday.

and reduce the school-to-prison pipeline.
Awesome. Thank you so much, Orrin Hudson.
Come on out Saturday, Tom.
Come on out if you want to learn a little bit of chess,
learn a little bit about discipline,
and slow down when you're thinking.
Saturday, over here at 11 o'clock.
Check it out.
Be someone.org.
Those kids look dialed in.
Thanks so much, Eli Jordan.
Appreciate it very much.
