Breaking news for you this afternoon.
An 11-year-old boy is now dead after fire officials say
a fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery.
Four people are also fighting for their life
in critical condition right now.
News 12's Jonathan Calixto is on the scene.
Jonathan, you've been out there all day. Tell us the updates.
That's right. Now, during that press conference
that was joined by elected officials,
even some neighbors here of this Mott Haven building in the Bronx,
we found out that an e-bike was the cause of that fire
that left an 11-year-old boy dead and four
of his family members now in critical condition in the hospital.
Now take a look. This on your screen here, we are showing you
the e-bike that they showed and had here at the scene
that they say sparked that fire at 320 Morris Avenue on Wednesday.
They say the bike was placed
in the pathway between the kitchen and the door,
leaving the family of five trapped inside their home.
Now, the aftermath of that fire is visible inside
on the 11th floor with the family's apartment door now blackened.
FDNY says two adults and two teens remain critical.
Neighbors who knew the family say they warned
the father of storing his e-bike in their home,
but say he was worried someone would mess
with it outside the apartment.
Now, take a look.
This is the vigil that is growing outside of the NYCHA building filled
with stuffed animals and candles for that 11-year-old boy.
FDNY says he was the youngest of the family
that remains now in critical condition.
He would have thought that that would happen.
He would not put his family in danger like that.
They were great.
It's just unfortunate.
They were a lovely family.
Now, as you can see here, back alive,
this is the vigil that is placed just outside
of that Mott Haven NYCHA building
as neighbors continue to honor that 11-year-old boy that is now dead.
Now, as part of that press conference, the fire commissioner also said
that as of this year, there have been a total of 401 fires started
by lithium-ion batteries with a total of six deaths.
Now, they did share that as a reminder, they just tell people to store
e-bikes outside of your homes and never indoors.
That's the latest here in Mott Haven.
Jonathan Calixto, News 12.
All right, Jonathan, thank you.
Just a tragic story there.
