Expressing gratitude to the citizens, the Mayor acknowledges the city's progress while emphasizing a commitment to addressing critical social issues, including crime, homelessness, and mental health, to ensure a safer and more prosperous future for all residents.
Well this feels really good.
Four years ago I stood here after one of the closest elections in
Winnipeg's history. I knew at that time that I'd
been given an incredible opportunity and I knew
that I had a lot to prove. Well four years have passed.
You've seen me do this job. You have seen
the decisions that I have made and the work that we have done together.
And tonight you have given
me the honour of serving as your Mayor once again.
And I have to tell you it means even more to me
this second time. Thank you Winnipeg.
I will never take your trust for granted. Most of all I want to
thank Winnipeggers for sharing my belief in the future of this city.
For believing in what we're
building together. For sharing the hope
and the optimism about what Winnipeg is becoming and can
become. Because I still believe that our city's best days
are ahead of us. We've accomplished a
lot over the last four years but there's still
so much more that we need to do. And tonight I'm
thinking even more about the work that is ahead,
even more than the work that we've already
accomplished together. I also want to speak
for a moment directly to Winnipeggers who did not vote
for me today. I know that for many people
the past few years have not been easy. I know that people
are worried about crime in their neighborhoods,
people struggling with homelessness and addiction,
mental health, and they are worried that those challenges,
what they mean for the future of our
city. I hear those concerns because I share those concerns.
Those are real problems and I don't
pretend, I never have pretended to have all
the answers to those problems, but I'm committed. I'm
committed to working with communities
and with the senior levels of government and Indigenous
governments to find the solutions
because we can find the solutions together.
And that includes my
priority of launching the new crisis community response service,
community crisis response model,
so that people experiencing mental health
and addiction crisis can get the help that they really need
and continue to work to make our neighbourhood safer
and our communities stronger.
So whether you voted for me or not,
I want you to know that I will be your mayor too.
My door will be open, your voice will matter,
and I'll work every day to make this city better
for your family and for my family.
Because we all want the same thing in Winnipeg for our children.
We want a place where our kids can grow up, where they can feel safe,
where families can build a good life
and where we are proud to call home.
