A man wanted in connection with a deadly bar fight
in Winter Haven is now behind bars.
Brian Motley faced a judge today after a brawl
at the Caribbean Bay Bar left one man dead and
another hurt. Fox 13's Carla Byron explains how investigators say
the fight escalated so quickly.
Police say it took less than a minute
for a verbal argument inside the bar
to turn into a deadly altercation.
Do you understand the rights explained in that recording?
Yes, ma'am. 40-year-old Brian Motley made
his first court appearance after turning himself
into authorities. Investigators say Motley punched
two men early Sunday morning, October 18th,
at the Caribbean Bay Bar in Winter Haven.
According to court documents, the altercation
began when one of the victims, Adam Chisholm,
pointed at a Florida State University logo on
Motley's shirt. Security footage shows Motley following Chisholm
and punching him in the head,
causing him to fall unconscious onto the concrete floor.
Chisholm suffered severe brain injuries and
later died at the hospital.
A second man was also punched and suffered minor injuries.
Presuming a finding of probable cause by the court
with regards to the manslaughter count,
the state is filing a motion for pretrial detention.
Court records show Motley has three previous
battery convictions dating back to 2006.
Motley was charged with manslaughter
and battery with a prior conviction.
