We're getting a closer look at an incident involving
the GWB shooting suspect from more
than 25 years ago that may have led to his retiring from the NYPD.
Welcome back to the
five o'clock news. I'm Natasha Verma and I'm Steve Lacey.
Victor Romero now facing a murder
charge in connection with the GWB road rage shooting.
But the family of the shooting victim
demanded answers about a decades old incident related
to his retirement. Fox's Francis Wang
is here with the document just into our newsroom tonight.
Francis. Yeah, Natasha, Steve, it is
something many have questioned,
including Karan Irving's family and lawyers. Why was the
investigation into Victor Romero's involvement
in an off-duty shooting closed when he retired
25 years ago? Tonight, we're continuing to take a closer look,
and we have obtained the 29-page
report from the Civilian Complaint Review Board.
It centers around an off-duty shooting involving
Romero from 25 years ago
at his family's Brooklyn laundromat during an attempted robbery.
According to the CCRB report we obtained,
Romero fired eight rounds, wounding both suspects.
Now, he was also shot, and he never returned
to active duty after that shooting.
The NYPD conducted its own investigation
and determined his use of force was within department guidelines.
The Civilian Complaint Review Board
was also investigating two force allegations against him,
and that is where his retirement comes into play.
The report recommended closing both allegations
because Romero retired in August of 2001.
We spoke with a retired NYPD detective
on how these investigations are handled.
If the investigation was deemed to find
that there was a level of misconduct,
then the officer would not be allowed to retire in good standings.
So the CCRB investigation did
not conclude malicious behavior on the part of the officer
as it relates to this case in question.
Romero was initially arrested on a murder charge
after prosecutors say he shot and killed
47-year-old Karan Irving
in an apparent road rage encounter
on the George Washington Bridge.
After that charge was downgraded to manslaughter,
he was indicted on second-degree murder just yesterday
and has posted the $1 million bail.
He is expected back in court November 23rd.
Meantime, Irving's family continues to push
to have his bail revoked.
