Chicago Bears News: Bears Miss Out on Buckner ? | Montez Sweat & Kyle Monangai Updates
Oct 28, 2026
We got Montez Sweat and Kyle Menungai updates,
and the Bears missed out on DeForest Buckner.
Or did they?
We'll talk about all that more on today's episode
of the Windy City Breeze Sports Talk Daily.
Let's go.

and make sure that you stay in tune with us, man.
All right, we're going to start with the updates, and then we'll get
into the news that everybody wants to talk about here.
But Montez Sweat is set to return this upcoming week.
This is something that I think is going to be very interesting
for the Chicago Bears for multiple reasons here.
Number one, good to get Tez back in the rotation.
But what kind of rotation is Montez Sweat coming back
to with the changes in his contract,
with the changes that he has now moving forward with his guarantees
because of this suspension?
There's a real conversation that Dennis Allick can have here and say,
not for nothing we appreciate you returning
and we appreciate you coming back and it sounded from
what i've heard from a lot of people that are close
to the situation that montez sweat truly
was remorseful in his uh in his comments today
and that you know it was i think the thing that
you can kind of tell when looking into some
of the PED history if it's something that's in something
else right something that's a banned substance
is like the 65th ingredient in something usually
they give you the one to two weeks suspension
on something like that. But if it is something
that is more serious, legitimately a PED,
Barry bonds, stick a needle in your backside type of
thing. That's when you get the longer length ones.
I would, from the time this injury happened,
or I should say from the time the suspension happened,
this is not an injury. I've kind of
felt like this was a product was in something else that you were taking
and have been taking
for a while. And maybe now was added
to the banned substance list either way though. I love the fact
that Montez Sweat, for everything that we try to,
you know, knock him for and everything that we
say, you know, you got to play better and yada, yada, yada.
He stood up there like a man. He took
his punishment. And the hope is that he's able to return back.
And you know how you put all of
this to bed. You go out there
and you get eight more sacks on the season and you create pressure
on quarterbacks like pressure has never been created.
I need that fire that you had from the
first couple of games of the season versus what we saw
on the final three leading up to the
suspension that we saw from Montez
Sweat. I think the big question now is
what kind of snap count is Montez
Sweat returning to? And when you look at
some of the snaps that he played previously,
there is probably an expectation
in my mind, especially since this was an
injury. To me, you got a two-week
vacation for your body, whether
it's actual vacation.
From what I've heard, he was still in the building. He was
still doing work last week.
The week before, of course, he had to be away from the building
because of the suspension. But
it's a two-week rest for your body. I want to see
you out there full regalia i want to see you ready to go
but i do think that there's a real
conversation if you do not see the production
from montez sweat especially with this trade
deadline coming up and things getting what seems
to be a heck of a lot more serious very quick
on names being moved around the nfl this could
be a time uh where you see the chicago bears
possibly if you're going to have a conversation
on it take a contract that wasn't a very movable
contract and maybe say, Hey,
would you like a pass rusher who has had 10 sacks, who is having
a little bit of a down year,
but we'll take pennies on the dollar here. And we're, we're
willing to move on from Montez
because we feel that we're going to get somebody back who is
better than him. Either a Khalil Mack,
possibly in that conversation, or if you want to go big
or go home, like I do a Jeffrey Simmons kind of name
who you would still need Montez on that team
for, or somebody else who can fill those shoes.
If you feel that Daniel Hardy and Austin Booker
have done enough either way i look
at this as you know it's never a negative when you get back
another body on that defensive line
but it can be a negative if the production is not there and if
you are kind of getting in the way this defensive line
and maybe it is more because of kyler gordon
i think that that is a massive part of it a massive part of it
but when you see this defensive
line over the last couple of weeks they have had
more production without montez sweat in there than
with him so to me Montez has a ton to prove coming back onto
the field let me know how you guys feel
down in the comments below uh drop a bird down
in the comments if nothing else uh let me know
though do you think that Montez is set to return
and come back as a dominant force do you feel
like there's maybe a little bit more fire lit behind
that backside or do you feel like you're
probably going to see more of the same more of what we have seen
and no matter what you need to
upgrade that position anyway let me know how you guys feel down
in the comments below we also got
to talk to you guys about the Chicago Bears uh situation here
with Kyle Monangai because i can't
call this an injury update because the latest
that we have heard from Kyle Monangai at least today
which was an extra practice
because of the Monday Night Football is that he is not going or he is
not back on the field just yet
when you look at you know the production that you saw from Kyle
this season and then him eventually going down.
I think that there are some concerns within this
running game, especially with the Chicago Bears activating Xavier Scott
to the full 53 man roster.
Now, a part of that reason is because he had
no more practice squad elevations left. You either
had to bring him onto the 53 man roster and fully activate him,
or you would have had to possibly
let him go. And somebody else could have picked him up.
They have liked what they have seen from
Xavier Scott on special teams on the last couple of weeks
and there's probably a big part of this
conversation that goes to Sam Roush now getting
more snaps throughout the season and of course
other tight ends possibly coming off of special teams
for you there to actually play in the
offense and so because of that you're now living
in this world where you need to fill in some of
those spots on special teams Xavier Scott has
been able to do that over the last three or so weeks
but I do think there's also a conversation
to be had here on trying to strengthen up this running
back room for potentially a little bit longer here
with this Kyle Monangai injury. Now he is
still not ruled out this week.
We won't get an injury report till Thursday, but there's a
conversation at a minimum to be had about Xavier Scott being
the guy that comes in and replaces
Roshawn Johnson. When you look at his history,
six foot one, 222 pound running back. So body-wise
fully replaces Roshawn at this point.
But I think the part that is the most intriguing to me,
because you haven't seen him, he played
with Minnesota last year. You haven't seen him get
a ton of run to this point.
But when you look at what he was able to do in Minnesota in a game
where he really got probably his most run,
he had 16 rushing yards on two carries, but passing wise,
I'm sorry, that's the wrong game.
He had two attempts and had one rushing yard in that game,
but passing wise, he was a big part of the offense that day,
eight targets his way,
six catches, 43 yards and a touchdown.
He had a 75% catch percentage. And on the season that year,
he had 16 targets, 14 catches.
That's a guy that can catch the football out of the backfield.
Ben Johnson is going to find a way to help him catch
the football, to have him be a part of
this offense. If he is somebody
who you think can step up in place of Roshan, who only got two
carries last week. And who I think that there is a very,
very big conversation on, you know,
as, as good as he is on special teams,
you just haven't seen it pop for him in the run game.
I think that he had a solid game in that one game.
And excuse me here, just double-checking, making sure.
Okay, my phone vibrated, so I had to make sure
that it wasn't an update on a trade or anything.
You saw him for that one game, right?
51 carries versus Atlanta.
Did have the one fumble that ends up coming out.
I thought that that was still very good technique
that Roshan was showing.
I thought it was a better defensive play
in that moment they got that ball punched out.
But for the most part, your backup running back room
has not been good on the field since Kyle Menga has gone down.
I wonder if this is kind of a
conversation of if Kyle misses this week,
if he were to miss more weeks here, subsequently,
we're going to need somebody better in there than Roshan Johnson.
And you know what? We're
going to give Xavier Scott an opportunity to possibly be that guy.
Let me know how you guys
feel down in the comments below to make this move work.
They did have to release DB Nick McCloud.
So that is something to keep an eye on as well.
But it kind of just feels like you're trying to bide your time until
Manunga gets back.
Hopefully that is this week.
I'm not saying that he has ruled out this week,
but if you're activating running backs off of the practice squad,
I do think that there's a real conversation
to be had on the possibility
that Kyle Manunga misses another week.
Let me know your thoughts down in the comments below.
Do you think it's time to try somebody behind Kyle
or behind DeAndre Swift
outside of Roshan Johnson?
or do you feel like Roshan's production has
been good enough to this point?
I'll be down in the comments talking with you guys as well.
One final thing that we do want to get to on this episode,
and like I said, hit that like button, subscribe to the page,
leave a five-star review.
Y'all know what to do.
The Chicago Bears will not have DeForest Buckner on this team this year
because he has been traded to the 49ers for a 2027 fourth round pick.
Now, there's a lot of people that are going to say,
ah, the bears missed out on DeForest Buckner.
And I think that that is a conversation that
I wouldn't push off the table just yet,
but I think there is a bigger conversation on the kind
of swing that the Chicago bears are hoping to make this season.
So will this be a miss out
or the bears looking to swing bigger than what other teams maybe
are willing to go in on this
season? You've heard me talk about it all week
with the trade talks and different things like
that, that I think your offense has proven to you to this point.
I think that you have seen enough
from Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams together to go,
Hey, we've got one of the top offenses of
football, and we're going to have one
of the top teams in football as well, because of that
offense, we need to go big on this defensive end.
And if you told me that the bears were
going to bring in somebody like, you know,
Joshua is a tough one for me. I would not be all hype
over Josh Sweat. That would be a wait-and-see approach
for me if you got the Sweat brothers
together here to finish out the season.
Khalil Mack is a name that I like. I don't know if I'm
sitting here over the moon about it,
but I would love to see Khalil Mack back in a Chicago Bears
uniform, especially if DeForest Buckner is going for a fourth.
You're talking about possibly a
fifth or a sixth for Khalil Mack.
That would be something that definitely would interest me as
well. I know they play different positions here,
but I think defensively, when you talk about guys
that you could bring in to me,
DeForest Buckner is going to go for the higher capital.
But my personal opinion
and what I want to see this Bears team do,
don't swing small.
Swing big.
Swing bigger than DeForest Buckner.
You've got a couple of 0-6 teams out here.
Jordan J.C. mentioned one of the names
that I think could be very interesting
when he brought up Tuli Polite.
Ah, dang it.
I thought I had it from memory.
I'm sorry, Tuli.
Hold on.
Tui Pulotu, son of a, anyway,
that's a name that I would love to see the Bears go after
if he is somebody that is on the market for you.
Or of course, you know, I've talked about it
a ton over the last couple of weeks.
If you have to swing big and you have to go for big names,
why not go for the best of
the big names?
And to me, that is Jeffrey Simmons.
So like if the Chicago Bears end up coming away
with one of those names, I wouldn't be
sitting here going, oh man, we missed out on DeForest Buckner, right?
I think there's a real conversation to be had,
and maybe I would rather see you go bigger on the defensive line,
but we have seen a couple of listeners who have talked about this.
Of course, JC talked about it on the Morning Breeze today as well.
The possibility of still going DB, and if you feel like, as you see,
the Indianapolis Colts are trading off pieces left and right here.
If you feel like one of those DB names is up for grabs,
a Sauce Gardner, who I don't know if that is going to be the case there,
But a Sauce Gardner or, you know, name one of the guys
that is out there, an Arik Woolen who had a rough night the other night.
But, you know, it could also be that defensive line as well.
But like if one of those names were available and you paired that up
with the Khalil Mack, is that something that could interest you?
Like those are the things for me where I don't want
to see the Bears come out of this trade deadline and go,
oh, you know, we feel very good about what we have.
And we hope that, you know, we hope
that we're going to get the most out of it.
No, bring me guys that showed you the production on the field.
Bring me guys that showed you that they have the answer on the field.
And so while it sucks that DeForest Buckner
is going to go to the San Francisco 49ers,
that's somebody that you're going to hopefully have
to see on the way as you get to an NFC
title game, because I think that they are going to be there.
You want to have an answer for that opposite of you as well.
And you're seeing NFC teams left and right get better.
The Seattle Seahawks, who were already a Super Bowl-caliber team,
got better with their trade
of Quenton Nelson.
The San Francisco 49ers,
who we talked about as a Super Bowl-caliber team this year with
Brock Purdy, who was playing at an MVP level,
just got better by adding DeForest Buckner.
Do not be the team that is standing
there going, well, we got our picks.
Well, we feel good about it because we got our picks.
You watch the Lions do that,
and we can count the playoff wins on one hand because of that.
We can count the Super Bowls on no hands because of that.
That is not a world that I want the Chicago Bears to live in,
and that is not a world that I hope
that we end up living in here moving forward.
But, hey, as I said, man, appreciate you
guys for tuning in and showing love.
As always, let me know your thoughts on the DeForest Buckner trade.
Do you feel like the Bears missed out,
or do you feel like there's a bigger trade coming down the pipeline?
Let me know how you guys feel down in the comments below.
As always, it is your boy Pat the Designer.
Back at it again.
Y'all stay safe out there, Chicago.
Bear down.
One love.
Peace.
