by a San Francisco nonprofit is giving us
an idea of what California voters are thinking
ahead of next Tuesday's midterm election.
Now KTVU's James Torres is with us now with some
of the key numbers from this statewide poll.
Good morning, James. Good morning to you both.
It's a survey that offered a questionnaire
to more than a thousand registered eligible voters
here in California.
And we found that some of the tightest races coming up in these midterm
elections are exactly what you might think.
That survey is done by the Public Policy Institute
of California. That's a non-profit,
non-partisan think tank that specializes in political research.
They put out these polls all the time.
Well, with this one, among its findings, it suggests
Proposition 40, aka the billionaire's tax,
could be one of the tightest races on the ballot,
with 52% of those surveyed saying they would vote against the measure,
with most of its support
coming from Democrats, especially those in the Bay Area.
Other tight races include Props 39,
which addresses voter ID, and Props 41 and 42,
which deal with state taxes. One of the largest
items on the ticket and the one we are keeping
our eyes close on is the race for California's
governor. And as predicted,
Democrat Javier Becerra is leading the way by almost double the
margin. According to the poll,
Californians are swaying 61 percent for Becerra, with a large
percentage of his support coming from both the Bay Area
and Los Angeles. Republican Steve Hilton
is seeing much of his support from the Central Valley.
And when it comes to congressional
control, the poll doesn't address any specific races in the House
or the Senate, but it did ask
if you would vote Democrat
or Republican in those congressional races if the race was today.
63% of those surveyed answered Democrat.
We are reporting live this morning in Alameda.
I'm James Torres KTVU Fox 2 News. All right thank you James.
