While President Trump continues campaign stops in Texas and Ohio to boost GOP candidates, pollsters warn that current predictions are unreliable due to the extreme difficulty of reaching Republican voters for data collection.
All right, 7-11, number of polls showing gains
for Democrats in several races ahead
of next week's midterm elections.
And so Republicans are largely playing defense right now,
but as we get to Doug, they're
still hoping for some pickups of their own.
Good morning, Doug.
Alex and Jason, good morning.
We'll see President Trump departing for Ohio today.
That's one of a number of campaign stops still
to happen through Election Day next week,
and it follows another visit from the president to Texas yesterday.
In Texas, it was the story of lines for dueling Senate candidates.
Democrat James Talarico, a big draw for those looking for change.
For 32 years, Republicans have been running this state,
and I personally feel they've just been running it into the ground.
President Trump, with a line of his own, had a pair of rallies,
something of a Texas two-step,
as he sought to boost Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton.
One supporter who waited in line was overcome.
I love my freedoms. I love my country. And we fought for it.
As he returned to Washington early this morning,
the president sounded upbeat.
But for the Senate specifically, our new Fox News power rankings show
an improving battlefield for Democrats.
And today, the president heads to Ohio,
one of three states where we're seeing Republican chances falling.
Ohio was a toss-up. Now, in the race between Senator John Husted
and former Senator Sherrod Brown,
Democrats appear to have a slight edge.
But all of these predictions depend on polling in a tough environment.
I'm hearing from pollsters that it is polling hell.
It is incredibly difficult to get Republicans
to respond to a text or a phone call.
That's been going on for a number of years now.
Pollsters try to compensate for that,
but with fewer and fewer people having landlines these days,
predicting these election outcomes has become very difficult.
Yeah.
And we've talked about it before, where they say, oh,
the polls show this, and then come election day, it's the opposite.
Yeah.
So it's like, can you trust it?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And, you know, it's a game of cat and mouse to some degree.
um as as people get more
and more difficult to reach um pollsters have to come up with new ways
to weight the responses that they do get
and then compare them to the actual election results to
kind of hone those models uh
but you know it's always a work in progress it's really surprising
because when it comes to a lot
of the campaigns they somehow find a way to contact me so how do
you think that you know on your cell phone i'm
getting texts, you don't respond though, no no no
but you get those you know generated, uh I get text
messages every day, you think that they would be
able to, how do they have my phone number, right? you're right
and I'm amazed at the texts that I
get from states I lived in years and years, yes uh
but so they're they're pretty good at tracking
you down, they're not, they're not all
that good about getting you to respond and that's the key
aspect and even the people who do respond
are they being honest in their response, are they
trying to manipulate the whole thing, right
yeah all right Doug, thank you very much
