A man and his goat, Scout, venture into the snowy woods. After Scout successfully jumps a large fallen log, the man discovers a rabbit kill and sets up a wilderness camp. He demonstrates survival skills by starting a fire with a fire steel and constructing a bow drill kit using only a knife, eventually successfully creating an ember.
Are you gonna go to the bush?
Hey, you can go outside.
You're excited, aren't you?
Oh, we're back at the crossing of the ditch.
I'm gonna cross over on this fallen tree.
It's about a good six feet up off the ground.
This goat's gonna attempt to jump that.
There's a big piece of ice there.
It's probably gonna stop him from doing so,
but we
shall see.
Gonna
cross?
Oh, it's a big jump, buddy.
You gonna cross
on the log with me?
You're good.
Let's
go
this
way.
One way or another, you can do it.
Jump!
Yeah!
Good jump!
Okay, wait over there.
That was crazy.
That's gotta be seven, six feet, maybe.
Good job,
Scout.
This is
a kill.
Rabbit.
That's a rabbit.
That's for tracks leading up to it.
Sure they're here, but I can't see them.
I see rabbit tracks actually leading up to it.
The snow is very hard,
and I can almost walk on top of it,
so I may not have left any.
I imagine it was coyotes or fox.
It's one of the same spot in the woods,
so I figured I'd just come to a different spot
maybe have a fire
and set up my tarp just for a different spot kind of thing.
So I'm going to use this log to sit
on and I think I'm going to hang my tarp up between
these two small little trees, that one and that one.
I found some punk wood and it took a spark from my fire steel,
it's been smoldering for
a good five minutes.
I found some basswood that I'm just roughing up
and going to use as a tinder bundle and
then burn my twigs.
I got my fire going,
I got my reflective blanket up.
It's a green one I got from,
well Ken got it from Benton's Backwoods for me, good size.
I've been wanting to make
a bow drill kit without a saw for a long time.
Every time I make a bow drill kit I use a saw, especially for the bow.
So this time I just used my BK7, I just chopped the ends off on the Y.
And for the bottom part where I usually saw the notch,
I just split it with the saw.
And then I took, where is it, son?
I took paracord and wrapped it around below the split
so that it wouldn't split anymore.
And my paracord's right in there.
And I just used
my BK7 to baton cross baton through this.
I made my spindle and my baseboard.
I did bring a socket.
I'm
trying
to do
the
punk
wood
tinder
bundle.
This punk wood is from an oak tree.
That's
a
lot
of
smoke.
Yes.
Me
too.
too promising.
Stay off of here,
Scout. Get off.
Dangerous ice.
All right,
we did it, Scout.
We did it. Where's your stick?
A hole of some sort.
Obviously, it's an animal's house. There's
tracks coming from this way right into it,
leaving down towards the water and out that way.
Maybe a groundhog? I don't know.
Pretty big. Hand in comparison to the hole.
