All the good happening in and around our city.
Our next guest is the founder of Wasty Girls.
And if you don't know, we're going to tell you all about Wasty Girls.
Joining me now is the founder, Erica Johnson.
Welcome. So what made you create Wasty Girls?
And tell us about the name because I know people
are wondering what does it mean to be a Wasty Girl?
Yes. So Wastey Girls is a social and fitness community.
We actually started out in Atlanta, Georgia,
and we have a chapter here in Detroit.
And so our number one goal is to create community
and a safe space for women to, you know,
be in community with each other, work out together,
hold each other accountable and just do life together.
I love that. And you started in Atlanta.
What's the connection to Atlanta?
Yeah. So I actually lived in Atlanta
and Atlanta is just a powerhouse for all things fitness and community.
and so we have a chapter there and also in Detroit too.
That's incredible. Talk about the response
that you've gotten thus far from the women
who have joined Wastey Girls. Oh my gosh the girls
they love Wastey. They love the accountability aspect of it
because you know we work out we do
Pilates every month we do bike socials and we
also do live workouts as well at 7 a.m. and so
the girls they absolutely love the fact
that they're able to you know work out with other
girls and hold each other accountable to when you started
this talk about the difference you were
hoping to make getting all
these women together yeah motivating them keeping them empowered and
just that sisterhood what was your initial vision oh my goodness
so initially Wasty Girls was just
like an activewear brand
so I just wanted to sell really comfortable activewear sets because
you know as a fitness girly myself I wanted
to find pieces that were for you know tall women
more curvier women yeah
but we actually grew into a you know a social and fitness community
and so it's completely different than what i ever imagined
but you know you know just being able to
hold each other accountable work out together
and just create a sisterhood in the city of Detroit
it has been absolutely amazing i love that so much
and you host some amazing events pretty
consistently too i do want to talk about one you hosted
with one of my favorites uh the glam doctor
Rashida Lashon uh this was a her skin series that you did yes yes
so it's a her skin series on
Instagram so um once a week I think every Wednesday we went live
and so we kind of connected with
either an esthetician a makeup artist a dermatologist
and we were just having conversations
about our skin because as the weather
is changing it's really important for women to you know be
conscious about what products they're using yes how
to you know kind of take care of their dry
skin as the weather is getting colder and also
because a lot of women were wearing makeup and
so we're trying new products yeah
but not not all the time we know like what those products are
actually doing to our skin
and so we were just spending the time you know in October just talking
about our skin and meeting with experts
to help us understand our skin a little bit more that is
so cool she's so great she does amazing makeup
and the perfect person to talk to you um you have
an event that is coming up
and you're focusing more on skincare this time with kills which is
a big deal because that's
a nice skincare brand i absolutely love kills like my bathroom is just
stacked with kills products the moisturizer the spf the cleansers
and so actually tomorrow
we are partnering with Kils at Somerset Mall
and we're going to be um going over all things skin
as well so you know the girls they are able to um get
their facial skin analysis know their skin is
dry acne if they have dark spots
and we're actually going to have licensed dermatologists
and estheticians on site to provide you know more knowledge
and products for their skin good
why an event focused on skincare
because we know you've done the movement event you started as an
activewear brand so it's a no-brainer that you'd want
to get the ladies moving but you're helping
them with their skin care?
Yes, because wellness is so much more than just working out. Like
wellness is us actually taking care of our skin and our body.
And so it's really important for
us to know what products work for our skin,
what products is going to help us achieve the skin
results that we want. And so it's really important
for us to have these conversations, especially as
we're, you know, getting into the more colder months.
It's really important for us to have
that facial skin barrier,
whether that's moisturizer or that's, you know, oil. It's
really important for us to know how to prepare
for you know what's coming yes what was your
skincare journey like how did you know you know what products
to use for your skin was it trial
and error yes okay J Wilson listen I purchased some products on TikTok shop
because it seemed like
it was a really good product
but it was a good product for the person who's actually selling us
the product but not for me
and so I did you know experience you know breakouts and it was a very
ugly situation but um i'm sure that other women they experience
that too because there's so many
products going around on TikTok and Instagram
but you know just because it worked for one girl it
doesn't mean it's going to work for us yeah
so that's why it's really important for us to know
what products work for our skin type yes
and know your skin type we do have someone here from
Kils that we'll talk a little bit more about the skincare
but so that event is coming up tomorrow
yes can people still register yes
so they can still register um just go to the Wasty Girls
website wastygirls.com and they can go ahead
and search um they can actually click the events tab
uh the event name is what's your type
and then they can get their tickets i love that what's
your type but we're talking skin type yes i like
the little twist you did on there yeah another
event that i absolutely love when i saw it you're doing r&b
and pilates that one's in november so
tell the people about that one yes
and so we're kicking off our bi-weekly
pilates series and so our first event is going
to be november 7th in royal oak where we're going to
be playing r&b music we're going to be meditating
and doing pilates for 50 minutes and so yeah you
guys can also get your tickets on wastygirls.com okay
and are we doing mat pilates or reformer what
kind of pilates okay have you done both versions oh yeah i'm
a mat pilates girl okay yeah which
do you think is tougher mat pilates for sure
because you have to use your entire body weight
and it is it is no joke but i absolutely love it
and you know the mats are going to be provided
all of the equipment they can just come show up
and bring anything no i love that yeah now i've
been doing mat pilates for a while i recently switched to the reformer
and mat pilates it's
no joke i listen the burns are different yeah it burns a little more
and a little longer and
there's more more reps they're both great yeah don't sleep
on the mat the reformer i think it's
fun because of the springs and you're bouncing off the springs
but it's a great workout yeah
mat is is no joke yeah so are you doing i know they have
the um what is it like the hot pilates
classes now have you tried that yet i have tried it
and i do like mat pilates because i think i'm
burning more calories and you know i'm sweating
so i feel like i'm you know doing a little bit
more work yeah but i love mat pilates okay i gotta try
the hot class i'm scared you can do
I don't like sweating. It just feels a little icky.
Okay, but if it means a good workout
Yeah, I'll have to check out the Pilates classes
with the Wasty Girl for sure, so if someone wants to become a Wasty Girl
How can they do that? Yeah, so they can
just come, they can just visit our website
Wasty Girls come, click the join tab and then they can register.
We actually have three membership tiers
We have a Wasty on the go membership tier.
So that gives them access to our
private Wasty Girls only chat, okay we
also have some meal prep plans some
on-demand workout videos too
and so our other two tiers, it actually gives them
access to our Pilates classes
so they actually get complimentary Pilates
classes complimentary, Wow
so this event that's coming up, is it open to just the
Wasty Girls or all women? All women, okay yes, how much
do they have to pay to join
in it's $25, oh that's yes, it's cheaper than
the drop-in classes at the Pilates
studio, so what would you say to encourage people to check out Wasty
Girls, check out the amazing events cuz you
do a great job with your events I'm
always looking to see what you're doing next
because it is fun, I mean
it's just it's empowering
and it's a cute little time, yes, and you need to
pull up, I know I do, pull up, I'm gonna try
and pull up at Pilates, okay it's in
Royal Oak? Yes. Okay, y'all might see me in Royal Oak on November 7th.
Let's go. So be sure to check them out.
