A disturbing scene unfolding on a West Philadelphia street tonight.
Philadelphia police officers opening fire during
a confrontation with a man in crisis.
That man now fighting for his life at the hospital.
This is the 10 o'clock news. I'm Dawn Timoney.
Our Brittany Weir has more
on what investigators say led to the shooting.
Yes, it started with neighbors flagging down police officers here
on North 52nd and Funston Street.
They said a man was standing down this street here on his front porch,
holding a gun to his head, threatening to take his own life.
Minutes later, that man aimed his gun at police.
They fired back.
Now he's in critical condition.
In this cell phone video,
a man can be seen on Funston Street in West Philadelphia
holding a gun as neighbors try to talk him down.
It's all part of a disturbing scene that ended
with seven police personnel opening fire.
First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford says officers
were just a few blocks away when a neighbor flagged them down.
When they arrived, they found
a 37-year-old male holding a gun to his head.
That dialogue went on for probably about 15 minutes
or so while the officers were trying their best
to talk this male out of the situation that he was in.
During those 15 minutes, officers kept their distance.
They tried to get him to put that gun down.
Stanford says the man moved between his home
and a neighboring abandoned property.
At some point, that male points the handgun
in the direction of those officers.
Four officers and three supervisors opened fire,
hitting the man multiple times.
They then rushed in to render aid.
At that point in time, the officers immediately rushed to the male,
render aid they get the male inside of a police car
and transport him over to Presbyterian Hospital
this incident comes after police had already
been called to the home the night before for a domestic
call for people who live in the neighborhood it's
a difficult scene to process you never know like
what other people's going through like mental
things neighbor Tyree Lockhart says he believes
police did everything they could certain type procedures got
to be done if you're not trying
to be careful. Police say the man did not fire his weapon.
The officers involved are now placed
on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
