Philadelphia, we are uncut.
Hi, I'm in Montgomery County.
Montgomery County never looks so good.
Look at that fall color right here.
Okay, well, you see what I'm looking at?
You're seeing this right here.
Yeah, this is a ski lift.
We're at Spring Mountain Adventures.
I don't see any snow, so why can we be here?
Oh, guess what they do right here during the Halloween season?
Yeah, you got that right.
You get to get scared.
We're going to walk through their haunted hayride,
their haunted walk through the woods,
and get you a vibe of what's going on down here.
What a great way to use the slopes when there's not any snow.
And we're going to find out when they're going
to start making some snow when you come up here.
Because who needs the Poconos when you can come right here in Montco?
We're about an hour outside of Philadelphia,
around, say, half an hour up the road.
Oh, I'm crying. I'm so scared already.
You see, that little tear was coming down.
In all honesty, though, this is true.
I was walking up here.
They scared the socks off of someone.
There was someone's sock that was just laying out up here in the woods.
You give me a little breeze because it is cool up here on the mountain.
I'll give you a little tear.
All right, so this is cool.
You get to actually ride the chairlift up
to get up here for the Haunted Walk.
Can you help me out when I jump out?
I sure can.
We got a drop right here.
I don't have any skis on, so all right.
Wish my knees luck.
I got you.
There we go.
I made it.
He made it.
I made it.
All right, let me grab my gear.
So good to be here.
So good to be back.
We did live shots with you guys
when everything was in session back during the season.
It was toward the end of the season.
You guys had a great season when it came to snow this year
because we were able to hold the cold.
Yeah, it was an amazing season.
We had great weather.
The snow hung around.
We had cold temperatures lasted, helped us with our snowmaking setup.
So it was great.
And now we're in the scream season here.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, that's right.
It's no longer Spring Mountain Adventures.
It's Scream.
Scream Mountain.
Scream Mountain.
Yeah, absolutely.
So, yeah, last weekend of September and all the weekends in October,
Fridays and Saturdays,
we have our whole haunted attraction here.
So, you're about to see what's going on.
Yeah, give me the behind-the-scenes goods.
Because yesterday, Mike G.,
he was in Delco checking out a place that got a little spooky.
And here we are today.
And the best part is the mountains, as you'll see,
will add to the scare and to the fear.
And seriously, who gets to go to a haunted hayride
and a haunted walk through the woods at a ski slope?
Well, we can't. I just think it's such a cool thing to do.
And I was seeing that sign over there.
You're one of the highest spots in Delco, aren't you?
Second highest spot in Montgomery County. 6,000 inches above sea level.
Oh, there's no hiding when you're this up high. That is for sure.
Let's go in and check it out. Hey, can I go to the VIP line?
Yeah, you're a VIP. You know what?
We'll get you under the ropes here today.
Boy, what a pretty backdrop.
I'm looking at those leaves right above you.
This is so scenic up here.
Amazing. Yeah, we're built right into the woods here.
So this walk that we're going to go through,
customers get to go through,
is built right in with the terrain that we have. We don't mess
around. We just build some things around it.
VIP access. Look at that. I don't know if anyone's
in here, but let's see. Well, that's not a good sign.
All right. So we're in the haunted walk.
Wow. You've done that once or twice before. Many times.
Many times. Good to see you guys. All right.
So you guys are both building this, working on this together.
When do you guys start getting going on this?
As soon as the ski season ends?
Just about.
We plan things probably all during the winter.
And then if there's some things we can do right in the spring,
like tear down a scene and rebuild, that's what we do.
So it's constantly all year round planning.
Okay, so you are building this stuff
from scratch is what you're saying.
Some of it.
This stuff was actually bought this season.
We found a party company that was actually going out of business
or merging with somebody else, I should say.
and they had some really good deals on this so it
was a quick new entrance for us this was actually
done in what like a week before we were done
the week before we started oh it's the final touches
that came in you never know what you're gonna get you keep
your eyes open for stuff like this
that pops up and then we can try
and fit it in that works for our uh our atmosphere here our
scenes i'm feeling this was this was a cool little setup
that we did this year let's let's go forward
oh i could see someone hiding like right
but wait a minute is there anyone else here i'm done
getting scared anyone back here hey you're
not kidding how the terrain and the natural rocks
really adds this right obviously you guys made this but just the vibe
and imagine this dark oh
i can see it yeah you're in the daylight of course you know
that you get this at night we have lights
going here dimly lit we got sounds going off
when we have about 20 actors hiding it throughout this
whole trail so you're uh you'll be lucky to keep
your socks on after you get through this one
Clearly someone did not.
That was legit up here.
You're scaring the socks off of people in Montgomery County.
Oh, yeah, this is a real rock.
Oh, check this out.
This is actually really cool because across Pennsylvania.
Wow.
Yeah, gotcha.
You got it.
Yeah, we got a couple of electric props, some air stuff that goes off.
All on sensors, too, so you don't know when it's coming.
All right, now that you mentioned it, I see the sensor right down here.
Do you mind if I get down here to show how that works?
So I want to see that little, what's kind of right over here.
Yeah, you're going to have to just hop over that rail there.
Oh, that sounds good.
Do me a favor.
Hold this, the signal booster guy.
There we go.
We brought the big guns since we're up the mountains today.
All right.
Guys, I got to tell you, I love going off-roading.
Let's off-road a little bit.
This is why I do best when I go on hikes.
Look at this backdrop.
Look how scenic this is.
We're going underneath the bridge.
What a great place to have, by the way, someone hidden.
So here's what's making that noise.
What is this? So this is just an electric motor
and I'm going to unplug it so we're not, so this
is just an electric motor with some chains
and we have a steel plate down here, this is what I call
the hood, this will go over and tuck in here then
so it keeps, if this chain ever breaks, it protects
anybody from this flying out. That's smart, we have it
on a what we call it's a Jr, which is a prop
controller, just because you said this I have to be corny
and do this: peekaboo, peekaboo. It actually
says peekaboo on there, all right, yeah
this prop controller here will actually power our motion
sensor our prop. Wow, um, all of it is programmed into that box
so when we do anything with a prop
we program it to the box, we tell it what to do and then
the motion sensor will set it off, so that's
the tech part of it. Yep, that's the noise part
and you kind of got like a little bit of a moat there
I hear people hide under there, someone will kind
of do one of these under there, you know, like a
little just like that. How scary would that be?
Because remember, you know, we're up the mountain
here. Imagine how dark it gets, right?
This is going to be darker than your typical spot because
not only are you high up, you're away from light pollution.
Just look at this. It's like I'm just
going for a regular hike, but no, no, no. It's a haunted hike
That is. And don't forget, you get
the rustling of the leaves. Oh, yeah.
The wind's blowing. You got all that natural noise, too
In fact, let's listen to that, right? Yeah, that's creepy
See, that's just the fun of using what's around the area
There it is, Scream Mountain. This is cool
What's the story on this, guys?
This is an old horse trailer that we kind of brought up here
as just a creepy looking piece. It's kind of falling apart.
Sure is.
We can have our actors around that coming out and scaring people.
And it's, you know, just a little prop that we were able to pop up here
and kind of mix in amongst the trees.
And it has an old look to it, too, so it kind of fit in nice.
It sure does.
The fact that it's quite literally falling apart right there.
I'm looking around over there.
You've got music.
You've got the sounds.
Of course, these tanker drums and that.
Yeah.
They'll be banging on those and grabbing your attention.
Oh, I bet they will.
All right.
All right, you know what's coming.
Is this this is gonna come again? We're gonna have one of those.
Yep. There it is. I knew it was coming. Wow
The transformers even I knew it was coming
and I still jumped a little bit. Wow. This is cool
Yeah, when you're walking around doing the test no,
I mean I'm used to it by now but yeah
There's some times where I get it.
I bet hey, we'll be right back right after this live on Good Day Uncut
Here all right things
are getting spooky in Mako.
How about this?
A ski slope becomes Scream Mountain on Fridays and Saturdays, right?
That's when you guys can bring people up here.
Yep, Fridays and Saturdays all through the rest of October.
It's scary.
You've got to come up here and check it out.
We're in the natural environment here, as you can see.
Look at this.
It's pretty good.
Big setup.
It was even scaring our crew a little bit going to break.
I'm not going to lie.
We were freezing up a little bit.
Our socks were flying off.
Guys, how much does it cost, by the way, to come to the Haunted Hayride
and the Haunted Walk Through the Woods?
We have a combo ticket for $35, so that includes the chairlift ride,
the haunted walk, and the hayride.
So it's a really good deal, for sure.
Three attractions for one.
I'll tell you this, speaking of that price,
I wanted to go see that Odyssey movie that came out,
like the one in the IMAX with the 70mm, the cool stuff.
It was $30! It was $30 just to go to that IMAX movie.
And you're how much to come here and get scared?
Yeah, well, you're getting $35,
and you're getting three attractions all in one.
so it's it's a 30 bucks for a movie
or 35 for this right here i see the scale is scary enough
in the dark right so oh that's so true hey
when you put this together do you have to keep fine
tuning it throughout the season always
if there's there's always something that you could change
and as you're watching the actors doing
their thing scaring customers yeah there could be a
prop that you can notice that like oh i could time
that a little better or an actor could be
at a little different spot give them
a little give them a little something different to do
but all the time it's constant you could find just anything in here
and you could be like this could
be a little better and you can see anything
so there's always something to change or tune up
while you're running for the season this is so cool is there
also a haunted dog over here is
that a dog house i see over there it actually
is a dog house all right so watch for the dog
house you'll be more all right let's let's let's test it out
a little bit so here's the deal
signal was going out a little bit i like
to live dangerously i want to go down here a little bit
to one of the areas you walk in then we'll head toward
the hayride area i'm keeping an eye on
our signal if it goes out we'll just go right out
back there since it's the second highest spot in
Montgomery County right i can get those cell towers up there
so this was really cool after we did the
walk through the woods where we just where we went
to break there's something you go in and it legit
scared me pretty good when i walked to it
and i thought we'd get into the science of it
sure so let's check this out i'm keeping an eye
on our signal right here yeah so in there what
is in there by the way on the other side there's just some twists
and turns inside there there's
a few actors that are hiding in there i don't
think i'm going to get in there i got to get
back up okay the signal's getting scared we might
be stuck up on the mountain guys and that's fine
with me so all right so let me just set
the stage what we're going to go take a look at when you get
close to that building right there the windows start opening
and closing yeah on their own and
And it's another one of those motion sensors.
And you were showing me the science behind it.
We were going to sneak around and actually look at the circuit board.
So walk with me back up here.
Tell me a little bit more about how that science works
to make those windows open on their own.
Is it compressed air?
What's the story on that?
So there's compressed air involved there.
And there's a 12-volt solenoid.
So it's just a little switch that's controlled by a solenoid.
You're taking me back to physics.
What is a solenoid?
Right.
So it activates with a little voltage and let the air through
so that the shutters will go open and close
There's little air cylinders in there that'll push the shutters open
and close fast. What do you call that banging noise?
Yeah, what is the air by the way?
Do you guys actually have like compressed air? Like what is it?
Yeah, actually right down right down
there next to the building. Oh, I see
We have two tanks and we actually put one
of our snow gun compressors on it. So it's constant air flow
low and that air is pushed out all through there all
the way down through
the rest of our haunted walk where there
are more animatronics down there that
is cool and I'm looking at the snow guides guys
when snow season start when
you start making some snow what do you think
in mid-december the earlier than
that we're getting the inside earlier
with those machines will get going but
we have the the machines that will fire
up probably next week that makes snow in
any temperature yeah actually week next week we'll
be making some snow okay
We'll have to get down the hill
and show you those, too, just as we go by.
But, yeah, we're getting ready.
It's chilly.
You've got a coat on today.
I had to.
What a temperature drop from up here versus down.
I didn't really need the coat when I was down at the parking lot.
I came up here, I'm like, I'm glad I put the coat on.
Right.
Yeah.
I can see why you're holding your arms.
You're cold, right?
All right, yeah.
You got goosebumps from, well,
he did scare us after all, that guy right there.
Well, guys, let's head back over here.
Here's what I'm thinking we'll do.
We'll go back.
I know the signal's good there.
We'll head to break, during break, why don't I sneak down,
we'll see if we can get a different section of the Haunted Hayride.
If not, we'll just finish the show up here, because,
I mean, it is cool being by the chairlifts.
We're live on Fox 29 and Fox Local, Philadelphia.
This is Good Day Uncut from Monco and Scream Mountain.
Oh, yeah, so there's what I love. I love me a good Haunted Hayride.
We started out at the top of the chairlift,
because you will ride the chairlift here at Spring Mountain Adventures.
Oh, I'm sorry, Scream Mountain these days,
since it's the haunted season.
You take the chairlift all the way up,
you do the haunted woods walk where the rocks
and the natural terrain really add to it,
and then you come down and you hop on the
haunted hayride.
All right, permission to come aboard, Kevin, hop on.
Excellent, I got the permission.
Signal's good, and up we go.
Maybe the signal was not as good as I thought.
Man, I'm not catching a break today.
Yep.
How's it down there?
Signal is great over there, but it did not like that's crazy.
The signal was flawless there
and I walk over there and signals drop it out
I'll get this little stronger as we walked over
there was another sign, another sock, they're scaring the socks off of people here
kids running around Montgomery County
right now clearly yeah wow yeah so that's
we'll be right back all right
i'll tell you what Monco sure
is pretty look
at this fall color right
here we're live just up the street from Limerick
in Collegeville this right here is Scream Mountain
normally during the winter it goes
by Spring Mountain Adventures your signal up here is giving
in trouble you know what's crazy let me show everyone
this i even brought the big signal
booster the lunchbox came and you know it's
so funny we go into the woods i think your woods
are actually haunted the ghosts right yeah
the quarry men up there trying to uh cut your signal
the good thing is i guess that means the kids
are having fun in the walk and they're not on
their phones right hey there you go that's
the flip side silver lining and we got a beautiful
shot right here you know we were gonna get all
into the spooky nature of it when you guys are
putting together some of those scary parts like
the parts where I was making those clicks from
the sparks and the wax of that machine what was one
of the hardest things to put in for you guys
like just even maybe even come up
with this design aspect yeah it's just where are you going to find
the scares where are we going to get people kind
of off guard yeah how can we hide it so you can't
see it how are you getting power to it how
are you getting air to it if you need to so you got
to kind of think of all these little things you know
that go into the behind the scenes of it
sure so people don't see it
because if you see you know how the sausage is made so to speak yeah
we got a little taste of that kind
of getting given away right if you see the lines going to
it you can see all the components so you want to try
and hide that and protect it from the weather
and keep it safe and all that but uh that's
the biggest challenge really is to try and kind of
hide it so you don't see what's coming next
and so these guys will do that with light too so you'll
light it up a certain way so you're kind
of attracted to look more forward and you're looking
around for it but then sometimes it could
be what's under you right direction it's almost
is like a magic show right yes you're just
misdirecting people so you kind of highlight
something so it draws their attention you know off
in the distance meanwhile something's going
to happen down by their legs or you know maybe
just behind them to the right or something like
that so a little bit of misdirection
and the actors are kind of trained to do the same thing
you know hide in a spot that you don't see what's coming
or one actor scares you and then another
one comes from the other side to kind of get you
um when you're not expecting it or your attention's
already drawn to a different spot oh i totally see
because you're right you get that one scare
someone just jumped in your face you're like all
right we're done with the scares and then no no
no another person comes out as i look around right here well you got
to be so proud of what you guys
have done and how you've built this over the years
and what you put together and this is beautiful
yeah it's our 18th season doing the the haunted attraction here
at scream mountain but you know
you have the winter it's nice to have
the seasons right we have the winter season uh spring mountain
adventures do all the skier skiing
but to have it transform into this and have people be able to
walk through the property and take the hayride all
the way around and see it like you know in
in this I mean obviously it's dark at night
but sure again I think we talked about it but the
sound of the trees and the wind
and all that, it's kind of spooky as well, so let's look at that, right
so I hear the leaves gently just kind of rustling
and we heard it, we heard it when we're walking
through, it's just the the natural aspect adds to the scares
and we were looking at some of the
sets down there I'm going to zoom in because I'm telling you
the signal is not playing nice today
but we're doing our best, so what's going
on down there, I'm looking at is that like a dentist because
yeah it is, we have a we have a little air tool up there
so all those people that love that sound of
the drill at the dentist, we got
that for you, they're sick, yeah for sure we have, so there's
actors and that's the start of the hayride
so yeah, the shot you had in the tractor it starts
right there and then there's 10 scenes that go through
the all the way to the one side of the
mountain back over to the other side
so it takes you down, okay, so all right I'm starting to piece
this together, let me bring this back to us
so okay, so you start at the base of the mountain
then what you do is you ride the lift all the way up
so here I'll show the lift over here, you take
that to the top of the mountain, you come down about halfway
the hayride picks you up, you use
that right there, so that by the way, where's the hay
that's it, i know it's a little misdirection
right, you know what, there's nothing wrong
with that, we'll put the leaves, you know what happens
with the hayride sometimes though too we
that's why you put benches and everything and make it
as comfortable as possible, you start sliding around on the way
and you're right about, so we
did have that for a while but it's just a nicer setup there
and people can kind of sit and be a
little more comfortable, well it is a mountain
at the end of the day right, you have the elevation
where think about like a traditional farm, it's flat, it's smooth
this is the best we got, you know
well we're gonna roll with what we got, we
were just kind of talking about you guys put like the
sets and things together and how you take
the chair lift up, get halfway down, you take the haunted hay
ride or the haunted ride from there, yeah
and then you go through this, how long does it take, would
you say to go through that, the hayride portion
of it maybe about 20 minutes, 20 that's good, maybe a
little longer depending on how the actors are doing
and how the tractors are moving, um but
mainly depends on just all those factors
and usually as i see it's probably about 20 to 30
minutes about there and that's a good ride i feel
for like a haunted hayride, i like them about 20
minutes or so, it feels a good number
so you add that you add the haunted woods walk and then at
the base we got to talk about the campfire
because that's one of the best parts too is the fire you
got that going during the winter too don't you
yeah yeah we got the fire pit down there live
music and uh our food truck down there
so you can be entertained whether you're on the ride or not
you can come and hang out if you drop your kids off to go do it
or once you're done you can go
down there and uh live music on uh friday
and saturday night so we do it everything just to
kind of have it a whole sort of experience
while you come out for a fall night and you kind of get
all bases covered and you can come have
a great time it's beautiful here it's awesome yeah how'd
you guys get into this by the way how'd you get
into just the right season you guys just love
halloween or what's the story it was a bit
of both like let's what can we do to expand our
expand the business we have the property to use yeah
so what what other seasons can we incorporate
here so the uh halloween business the haunt business
is big it's a huge business across
the country so it's fun why not jump in and we have
a chairlift that we can use and it's very
unique right so yeah let's look at this who else can say
that let's walk up the chairlift right
there i mean who else could say they got
a chairlift to go for a ride at a haunted hayride
i think that's so cool and did i hear people come back year after year
not only people that come to
visit but then also your monsters
or how about i hear you've been here since you're 13 yes i have
been i've been here since i was 13 this is actually my first job
and get out of here yeah i started
here in october behind you i was the first scene
of the hayride yeah you remember the to our dental
scene you guys are so sick we'll make it out
of dentist and the drill no more let me zoom in on this
again the fact that you're having
the drill noise yes we we have we have our air tool up there that
makes the drill noise and then um yeah i started i started here
when i was 13 i've been here ever
since i've worked every winter season
that i could stepped away from a little bit from winter to
yeah focus on automotive that's what i went
to school for oh fantastic i'll bring you my
oil change next time i just had to get one
then i uh came back in 2020 to um work winter again
but i'm consistently here for the haunted house season
so okay so you you've really seen this
change over the years yes
and i've helped make it change too as well yeah john and myself when
we got together and started doing all
these crazy things it's let's keep walking up the hill the
signals and signals starting to be fussy again
but it's um it's changed ever since like when i
first started everything's changed and yeah me
and him come up with these crazy ideas we go out and
build them and um you can tell
that it's just it's working everything about it's working we get more
customer base um more actors more people want
to be doing this and our actors like you said they
come back every year and we have about i think
this year we have 45 to 50 return that's pretty
out of about 60 yep that's
so cool you know it's interesting mike g was over at the base motel
yesterday at delco yeah i was one of the monsters
for a season that came out of the cornfield you're
an alumni so i'm just saying if you need
an extra guy oh wait i always work on prizes i was gonna
say oh sure i could be one of the people i want
to jump out from underneath that little boardwalk
we had i mean that would scare me i think we could put them
on the zip line i think the chainsaw
The zip line?
We have a flying chainsaw, man.
You're lying.
No.
So we have a down at the bottom of the hills,
the second and last scene of the hayride.
It's our chainsaw scene,
and we have a guy on a zip line who he's tethered up.
Then we have a guy across the way with another chainsaw.
And as the hayride's just about to pass, he'll jump,
and he'll be in the air for about 10, 15 seconds.
With a chainsaw?
With a chainsaw.
And it's about this big, I would say.
These guys are sick.
Drilling noises.
That was always my scariest part of the hayride,
is when Jason came out with the chainsaw.
so you got a chainsaw flying through the air
and you get to ride through the air right here
at Spring Mountain
in Malco Spring Mountain Adventure has transformed guys hey thanks for
rolling the punches with the signal getting scared
from you guys no problem good to see you again
thanks this was fun thanks for coming we love
having you here so anytime you want to come
hang out with us get scared
or whatever whatever you want to do we'll have you the hospitality in
Malco. Guys, I got the week off from Uncut next week.
I'll see you at the beginning of November.
Mike G's got you covered. He's counting
me down right down my ear. Have fun,
Mike G, next week. We'll leave you now live from Malco.
