James Coughlin, World News Report Today.
Ladies and gentlemen, we've had two
strong earthquakes over the Philippines.
We have all the active fault lines and all the active volcanoes.
We had a 6.7 magnitude earthquake pop off,
but it looks like it might have been a lot stronger than that.
It came in as a DYFI-8, ShakeMap-8,
and the depth was undeterminable.
by the USGS, a 6.7, 43 miles east-southeast
of Palu, Indonesia.
Now, just to the north of that, in the Philippines proper,
we're at 6.2 pop-off,
and that one wasn't as deadly.
It was in a much less populated area,
but we have volcanoes awakening all over this area,
And we have fault boundaries
and fault lines trying to come together and create, well, plates.
Jumping over to volcanoes and earthquakes.com.
Let's see that.
Let's see.
That's 6.2 here in the Philippines.
And that's 6.7 just south there in Indonesia.
Wow.
Pretty incredible stuff.
Let's see if we can get some more information on the bigger quake,
a 6.7 undeterminable depth.
This is USGS information.
The Germans came in at 6.7 as well, and Indonesia came in at 6.7.
All could not determine the depth.
Let's get some detailed information about this quake here.
Remember, this is where all of the plate boundaries
are trying to work their way out,
And all the volcanoes are becoming active
or have been active for some time.
All right, a very strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake two hours
and 58 minutes ago.
And that's going to be coming right out of, I guess,
Indonesia would be the best way to put this.
Although they're very close to the Philippines,
they're a little bit south.
All right,
here we got a 6.8 as it came out originally,
and shake, rattle, and roll.
It's on the land.
That's why you're seeing such a high shake map
and such a very high DYI.
A lot of people felt this.
It was very close to one of the major cities here, Palu,
and that 6.8 is nothing to play around with.
Again, no one's giving a depth.
Usually on land, we always get a depth.
That was a big quake, and it, well,
touched some parts way, way far away.
This has obviously been downgraded by the USGS from a 6.8 to a 6.7,
but still, 10.6 atomic bombs worth
of energy released with this blast?
Unbelievable. Unbelievable.
Main reporting agency, USGS. I don't know why Brazil is even in here.
Under terminal depth, 10 kilometers.
There's not a lot of information,
except for this was another large quake,
probably due to the magma movement under the islands.
All right, let's compare some quake data
from different reporting agencies.
First, it says 56 aftershocks.
it's a bit dated we have over 60 aftershocks
at this point a big quake usgs a 6-7 default depth
germany 6-7 default indonesian 6-7 default depth
we have raspberry shake coming in at 6-8 where
everyone originally came in and with 6-3-5s gotta
be the french of course plus or minus 0.15
Australia came in at 6.6,
the Europeans came in at 6.7,
and the Italians came in at 6.7.
And that's all the data we have.
We have the Australians coming in at a depth of 20 kilometers,
and the Italians coming in at a depth of 18 kilometers.
So that's probably right around the real depth of this.
remember plus 60 aftershocks
so in summary we have a 6.2
and a 6.7 magnitude earthquake
it looked like we have a tsunami warning
with a 6.7 we'll check that real quick
and these were both well one was more
in the philippines at 6.2 to the north and one more
Indonesia, generally the same area,
same volcanic ridge, and same plate boundary.
Very active weather right now.
We'll check the buoy data center
and see what's going on, if there was anything going on.
Over to the National Data Buoy Center,
I see no buoys in event mode anywhere around Indonesia
or the Philippines.
So we're all good there.
The red also means severe destruction in the populated area.
So it can mean one of two things.
So we're okay there.
That said, God bless you guys.
