A St. Paul man is being called a hero after stopping
a runaway school bus with more than a dozen students on board.
Video of the rescue has gone viral,
and the 27-year-old's actions are making national news.
Lori Glover shows us how he's being recognized tonight.
It's a little overwhelming, you know.
Everybody's contacting me, but it's also rewarding, you know.
Ebro Ahmed says he's always felt loved by his community,
but lately he's been getting accolades,
including a Humanitarian Hero Award from the Human Development Fund
for his quick thinking and even quicker actions earlier this week.
They're showing their support
and they're telling me what I did was good
and I'm shedding a good light on East Africans and Muslims in general.
Ahmed says he was kicking a ball around outside
his family's corner store in St. Paul
on Monday afternoon when he saw a school bus with 19 students
from Battle Creek Middle School on board rolling down the street
with the door open and the driver appearing
to have a medical emergency.
Surveillance video shows Ahmed springing into action,
jumping on the moving bus,
and accidentally putting the vehicle in reverse before getting it
in neutral and pulling the parking brake.
Am I doing the right thing? Am I committing?
Am I doing the wrong thing? Did I read the situation wrong?
I thought it was a prank too,
and I thought I was dreaming too for a long time.
St. Paul Public Schools says paramedics took
the driver to the hospital,
but he's since been released and is resting at home.
District officials are also calling Ahmed a hero for helping the driver
and making sure all the students got home unharmed.
That's just the human in me.
It's not really, I didn't do nothing crazy.
I've seen multiple humans that need help,
and, you know, I fell for them.
And, you know, I had verses from my religion
and what my youth coaches taught me and stuff,
And I just used all that they taught me, and I went and helped.
Ahmed says watching the TV show Grey's Anatomy prepared him
to keep calm in the unexpected moment.
And even with all the accolades, he believes he did
what anyone else would have done in the same situation.
I really don't think I'm a hero.
I just think I did what I think God put me
in that situation for a reason.
And, you know, I just did what I had to do.
