They Reverse Engineered the Antikythera Mechanism — It Was Counting Down to Something
Inside the Antikythera mechanism, a pointer creeps through a spiral toward carved signs and hours, years ahead. One night in Sicily, a darkening like the ones it marked left an Athenian army stuck on the shore. Its general refused to move, and the army never got home.
It took more than a century to work out what the box was counting toward: a diver who died bringing up the wreck, a former minister who spotted a gearwheel in a lump of bronze, cyanide that cleaned away letters, an eight-tonne X-ray machine pushed through a museum basement door, two teams that found the same day zero, a simulation that says it would jam, and a bronze rebuild that says it ran. And for every sign on the dial, its makers engraved a few lines of Greek, and they say far more than when.
